Here in Canada it is that dreaded time of year - income tax time! We have until April 30th to get our taxes done. However, for the first time in its history Canada Revenue had a huge computer glitch - they are not saying what and no one could file either on line or even manually last week. They are supposed to have it fixed by this Thursday!! The government is not even going to give folks a grace period for thier mistake!! Typical. In fact they will probably even find a loop hole to charge us for thier stupid computer glitch. I was just about ready to prepare mine when it happend.

Anyone out there have theirs done yet? Do you prepare your own or pay to have it done?

Please pass the EXCEDRINE!!!!

I do my own!! It's just getting enough time to sit down and do it. I do have files made up and file tax stuff in them all year long.

Mine are done and I do them myself - not much to it. I have not mailed them in yet [I dont' do the "e-mail" thing.]

This year I am so poor that I qualified for free Turbotax and free electronic submission, which I did for the first time. Still waiting to see if it really worked.

With Turbotax I always whip through the forms giving my best guess. I don't sweat it! I figure if I make a mistake, let them come and get me.

April 30th? In the US, we have to file by the stroke of midnight of April 15th, usually. Since it's a Sunday this year, we have til Monday night. Every year, the local NYC news features people on line at the post office to get that post mark. Some people are even filling in their forms at the post office.

I usually do them myself, but I had some complicated real estate transactions this year. So, this year I'm paying a bona fide CPA from a firm - got a referral from one of her other clients. She did manage to find some stuff to reduce my taxes that would not have been covered by turbo tax. I just have to review and pay the bill now.

BTW, for US residents, don't forget the one time phone tax deduction. Applies only this year for a tax credit of $30 - $60 if you've ever paid for land line service.

Here's a link for more specifics.

I have all our stuff ready for our tax lady. I need to e-mail her and set up pick up.

Ours is complicated because we have our personal taxes, a rental property and farmland that we rent out. Our tax lady does major repairs over a period of time to benefit us and does some other stuff we wouldn't know the first thing about doing.

Not only do I do my own...I used to do lots of other peoples'! I'm an accountant, so...this is usually super-stressy time for me. I lived for April 15th, because it meant the end of all the crazy hours and rude people and people who would bring me all their receipts in a dirty suitcase and say "here ya go, can you sort 'em out??"

I've done mine with QuickTax. I was just waiting for the glitch to be over before I actually filed them. I'll likely get around to that this weekend. The filing part I find easy. I just can't believe how much of my money the government gets.

Right on!!! I have also done my own with Quick tax, but the last couple of years I have too many slips to deal with (rrsp contributions etc.) so have had them prepared at H&R Block - cost me a bundle!

I might try an online tax form through my credit union - it's only $15.99.

Actually, I am so disorganized I have a terrible time. I have a guy that does them but I list deductions so I have to do all the nitty gritty. He only charges me $250.
!!! I finally finished and he is picking it up Thurs. night. Since I also have my business and farm land it is more than I can handle. What a relief I'm done.

I figure my own & then take them over to the Sr. Citizens Center & have an AARP rep/tax acct. double check everything. I've already received my refunds.

GrGranny, you sound like us!

When my husband was actively farming, I had to go around and find all the receipts he threw here and there throughout the house. Then I had to seperate them into all their categories and total them up for our tax lady.

Now the farm taxes are the easiest to get the info for because it's just the amount of rent for income and the taxes and insurance we pay for expenses that I have to list.

Our rental is complicated this year because we were without a tenant(still are) since August and have been having a lot of work done to the place as per state/county/township laws which changed since our last tenant took residence. We have to get a c/o and to get one, a TON of work had to be done to the 80 year old house! That place is going to be nicer than our 45 year old house by time we're done!
