and who is justifying this? i only see people speculating about this without any proofs. like people who never visited eteri's rink and never been at her practicies are calling her methods inhumane.
or generalasing all russian coaches as a whole, like there is specifically russian training system, which is bacilly a torturing and can't by applied in the US, because US coaches have higher moral ground. i see articles like this all over western media, from people who never been in russia and know nothing about russian figure skating

There was an interview done either before or during the 2014 Olympic season with Eteri praising Yulia's ability to go without food....magically 4 years later the same skater that got praised for going without food retired from the sport due to an eating disorder.

https://sochi2014.rbth.com/yulia_lipnitskaya_russias_golden_girl

Tutberidze has said that Lipnitskaya has amazing willpower. “I have never seen anything like it,” said Tutberidze. “She can practically not eat anything. When she has to lose weight, all she eats is powdered nutrients, which give her energy. But she manages, thank God. She is intensely driven.”

Wow, the topic of weight, ED, food is ALWAYS so popular in forums.

It's a tough topic in figure skating because, unlike many situations in which women starve themselves, dieting does have an impact in being able to complete the technical elements required to excel in the sport.

did she ever said that eteri is responsiple for her eating disorder? i don't think so (i'll probably get crucified if i say that i don't believe in her eating disorder story at all, so i'm not going to say this)
she retired 2 years after she left eteri. so why it's eteri's fault and not urmanov? not that i blame urmanov. because i don't think that he had a control over yulia's training process, he was just a puppet of yulia and her mother. eteri could praise yulia in the media for such things when they were together, but their main disagreement was that yulia wasn't listening to eteri and partly took control over her training process, for example she stopped visiting OFP lessons (fitness, cardio? i don't know english word for that kind of training) at eteri's school and started to train with her own coach. after yulia left eteri eteri actually bashed her in the media saying that yulia was lazy and prefered starvation instead of intense training. so i don't think that eteri forced yulia not to eat anything

I always thought this.

Gracie Gold - the best potential the US got - dropped out because of ED and other things.

Yulia Lipnitskaya - one of the best potential of Russia - dropped out because of Anorexia.

Zijun Li - the best potential of China - dropped out (according to an interview with HongBo Zhao) things related to Anorexia and motivational issues

Satoko Miyahara - one of the best Japanese skater - had to take a break because of a broken hip caused by under-eating and over-training, arguably also maybe because of an ED

Evgenia ? - one of the best skaters of russia - got a stress fracture? maybe also due to under-eating and over-training? btw. stress fractures in female athletes are often a sign of under-nurishment.

And that's only the count of the last few years. And then there are still people who say, that people are overreacting, because figure skaters only watch their diets comparable like how a normal person watches their diet a little.

So how do young girls develop ED's? By people telling girls who are a normal weight that they have to loose weight. Simple as that. Of course, not everybody is susceptible to it, but you go tell 100 young girls that they need to loose weight even though they are at a healthy weight already and let them do intense physical training at the same time. At least double as much will turn out anorexic compared to the number of girls that would have turned anorexic no matter who or what was told to them.

Alina is Tatar. Evgenia is half Armenia. Genetics is on their side.

I wouldn't speak so easily about genetics in the East-European countries. The population have mixed and mixed and mixed during the centuries, borders have moved up and down. I have such a mixed combination only from going third generations down the line (Polish, German and Bulgarian on top of the Romanian one - and the Polish part came from Galizien, which was also very mixed - who knows what my ancestors 6th generation down the line were?), that i could never identify which genes from with part would play a role in how many kg i have. In my country there was just a saying: Watch the mother to know how the daughter will look like, but with the radical changes in nutrition in East-Europe from the last 25 years, i wouldn't even bet on it (to me it applied thought).

Even if you want to believe that Eteri had absolutely nothing to do with Yulia starting to get an eating disorder - someone in a position of authority over children praising a teenage girl's ability to go without food is disturbing and if Yulia had been doing it in lieu of Eteri's off ice conditioning program, I find it hard to believe that if that were the case that Eteri would praise her for it in an interview. Given everything that Eteri portrays about her school, I find it unlikely that she would have kept a skater for years if the skater was not following her program.

It’s not about believing in Eteri or not. The fact is that Yulia retired 2 years after leaving Eteri so it’s hard to put all the blame on Eteri for Yulia’s eating disorder. And as far as I remember, Yulia looked much thinner at CoR 2016 compared to the last competition she’s still with Eteri group.

i love how brian orser's athletes are never included in such lists.
evgenia got stress-fracture because of under-eating, but someone like tursynbayeva, who is constantly injured, weighs 30 kg because of good genes. just like yuzuru

I never understand this obsession with the harsh diet. I was so happy to see videos of preparing Yuzuru's meals in Olympics which included normal and reasonable portions of rice, meat, potatoes, ... He even mentioned he goes to McDonals quite often and he eat potato chips a lot. There was a video of a Yakisoba restaurant in Sendai where he visited and as he is an athlete the owners were pondering if they had to bring him just water/tea and to their surprise he replied "Coke please". And we all know how thin he is. I know people have different metabolisms but I can't accept that all these young girls have a slow metabolism and they have to starve to be in shape.

On a personal note, I'm a female and till the age of 24 I was never beyond 53 kilos while based on these absurd standards I used to eat as much as two/three men. For example for a lunch in Subways I used to get a 12" sandwich and ask for another 12" bread to wrap it around the first one. I would have that double layer sandwich plus soup and drink for lunch and of course full breakfast and dinner every day, never beyond 53. I was also a professional athlete, martial arts, with at least 4 hours a day nonstop fighting training. So even if someone comes up with a scientific explanation for this starvation procedure, which I doubt, I can never ever accept it based on my personal experience :confused2:

I just feel so bad for these young girls, you put a kid through a process and make her 4,5-year-old mind believe that's the right thing to do and when she is a teenager, she has already believed that it was her own decision and continues. At the moment I'm so angry with all the adults in the world :curse:

While you are lucky to have such metabolism, that is not the case for everybody. In fact, such things are very rare.
So when you practice a sport where every extra gr matters, you have no choice.

As far as I know none of Orser's ladies: yuna, Christina Gao, Alaine ever dropped out because of ED. On contrary, Orser teaches jumping technique that rely more on height of jumps and power, instead of fast rotations. Why would I mention him?

tursynbaeva is clearly pre-puberty. It's very rare for pre-puberty girls to develop eating disorders because they can really eat anything without gaining weight. Also I'm not familiar with Tursynbaeva's injuries and what caused them. And Yuzuru's diet is well-known. He just eats, whatever his mom cooks for him. And it would be news to me if spraining your ankle is now caused by an ED.

I love how you never fail to drag in non-russian coaches or athletes into a matter because of some kind of inferiority complex that let's you assume, that every slight mention of an Russian athlete/coach/whatever is an attack even thought I also mentioned US, Japanese and Chinese skaters.

eteri's school wasn't so fancy back then. yulia was her only star who attracted other girls into school. and because of that yulia's mother decided that she should be in charge instead of eteri.
i agree that eteri shouldn't say that, but she was inexpirienced in giving interviews, and said such a silly thing just to please yulia

Three observations about these types of threads and I’m out.

1 - I find it weird to talk about people’s bodies.

2 - Where does everyone get all this detailed knowledge about individual skaters that really only their team would know about?

3 - I’m surprised by the number of experts with meaningful knowledge about eating disorders, human growth, orthopedics, and biomechanics. All of these are highly specialized fields that even most experts (like physicians) wouldn’t have knowledge of without more specialist training. Yet, despite the odds, it seems we always find an abundance of these specialists in the figure skating community :sarcasm:

You guys giving examples of Eteri and Frank Carrol’s past behaviors regarding weight and food intake-do you really think it’s a coincidence that two of their more recent successful students(Gracie and Yulia) both came out saying they had to leave the sport to get treatment for eating disorders?? Put two and two together-normalizing that kind of behavior is very harmful to young athletes who’s bodies are still growing and changing all the time

I don't think Gracie's situation is a coincidence at all, but Frank Carroll seems to be some kind of protected species around here.

This thread is gross. There was so much that was good and interesting in that article but as usual, it's turned into a weight discussion.

he doesn't teach jump technique that relies more on something. good technique relies on both, and brian is a good coach, why should he ignore rotation speed? technique of a skater mostly comes from the physical features of an athlete. not every skater is able to jump high, or rotate fast, even with brian orser as a coach.
brian have skaters with high jumps, as well as skaters with low jumps. just like eteri. yuzuru jumps are medium in height, he relies more on the rotation speed. tursunbayeva's jumps are tiny.
this fairy tales from TSL and other arm chair experts that there is good and bad technique and eteri teaches bad technique has to be stopped

You accused me in your post that I was deliberately leaving out Orser out of a list of skaters who dropped out due to ED's, when

1. Orser never had a student who dropped out because of ED's
2. Your example of Elisabet Tursynbaeva I don't follow and have no idea whether she broke her foot or a torn ligament or a concussion. I see no reason why you would accuse me of deliberately leaving her out.
3. I didn't even mention Eteri in my post. I literally just said: Gracie, Yulia, Zijun, Satoko all are one of the most talented of their respective countries and dropped out due to ED related stuff. Maybe Evgenia, too as she has a stress fracture and stress fractures often come from undereating in female athletes. How anyone can turn this into sth in accordance to: You deliberately left out Orser but are bashing Eteri is beyond my understanding.

But since you started it:
of course Brian's teaches jump technique that relies more on power and height. Yuna, Christina, Alaine all are power jumpers. Elisabet's jumps got bigger under him even though I have no idea how they look recently as I said I don't follow her and am generally not interested in her as much.

It is not a rumor that Eteri's early students have jumps that rely on more rotation speed. Anyone who saw Yulia's jumps knew she wouldn't make it through puberty because she relied on rotational speed too much. Evgenia is better in this aspect but she also is more of a fast rotator than a power jumper. Only with Eteri's younger students has she started to teach better jumping technique, as seen in Polina or Alina.

i'll say anyone who watches TSL and believes what this amazingly knowledgeable people are saying. of course no one from eteri camp will survive puberty, there is no technique and everyone is doomed, they always knew. with yulia, with evgenia, now with sasha.
but i don't understand how jump height is connected to chances for surviving puberty.
do you actually know who had the highest jumps in the world among ladies? there was american junior skater, vivian le, in 2015/16 season she jumped higher than midori ito. just watch her now, how she survived puberty.

the fastest senior rotator in the world is nathan chen btw. his jumps are also not big.
