Is Irina Really A Nice Person?

So don't click on it. I think you'll find that permits you to avoid it quite nicely while still allowing those who wish to do so to read it and at the same time avoid your hall-monitoring. A true win-win situation.

Woah, from a "Kwaniac" to another "Kwaniac". Love this response, LOL

Why should this all of a sudden become a personal attack on the poster?

I'm simply saying I don't believe all this B.S. surrounding her. You can believe it all you want and there's no one forcing you to do otherwise. Everyone's entitled to being gullible, and even I am not immune from being one, but I just find it hard to bite this one. It's too much of a "lifetime moment" to be true, and too perfect to cap a skater's Olympic (and most likely final) season. How dramatic.:frown2:

And what's going to be next after she retires? A big-ratings comeback due to some family emergency that forces her to raise more money? A serious hip injury that she'll show she can overcome by doing quintuple jumps day after day after day? The ability to fly?

Enough of the use of sob stories and just let the powerful but ugly skating do the talking.

You "naughty hooligan"! Don't you know that not worshipping Irina and not taking to heart every word that drips from her mouth is a mortal sin for her legions of sympathizers here?!? Now, look at the raucus you've caused and the number of posters you got in trouble with the moderators!

The fact is Irina has not needed anything or anybody to boost her skating success. She's managed to be out on the ice in every competition since 1998 barring illness. Her finish at Worlds 2004 is her lowest finish in decade.

Her success in her career is based on what she is and has been consistently putting out on the ice, regardless of whether she has been ill battling it or dealing with emotional stress with her mom. She doesn't look for excuses to stay home, she looks for every opportunity to get out there and do what she's chosen to do to make her living. The $ is important part of it and yes her mom's medical bills are astounding, but if she wasn't skating she'd be doing another job and contributing still to them.

I think that is very telling as to where her heart is and what she wants to be doing.

Mzeng, it's really funny too that you keep mentioning "sad story" because you continue to get all worked up everytime Irina's name is brought up regarding the fact that she is dealing with a debilitating, life long ilness. You said last year that all Michelle needed going into Turino was a "sad story". I think of that everytime I see a post about Michelle's hip injury.

According to the legititismacy offered here of skaters and there injuries I guess it could be offered up that perhaps Michelle could be "faking it" out there at Marshalls and wasn't skating at the level she could. So see it can cut both ways.

You can also thank ABC/ESPN for the media last year with her comeback overcoming her illness. She made request this year to all media to stop and let her skating speak for how her health is doing. It speaks that she has her health in remission right now and that her medical team is good.

Why the constant drum beat for a couple hear to try to make her illness out to be a out and out lie? Did she run over your dog or kill you cat? You are basically calling Irina, her coach, the medical team from the RFSF and several reknowed medical specialists both inside Russia and the United States liars.

I see it as yet another way to try to downplay her accomplishements. when you aren't attacking her skating, you are attacking her health and basically calling her a liar to boot, otherwise you are attacking the ISU saying they have the gold all secure for Irina in Turino.

This is absurd.

Thank you Matman for deleting my post.;) I was only retalating to some posters and shouldn't have come down to there level. Over and out.

This was decided by a Mod discussion. When posters are just making personal arguments with each other over a period of time, we want the posters in question to finish their dialog by PM so that other posters can continue the topic without having to read the personal discourse.

It also prevents the closing of a thread.

Actually the 1998/1999 season was not so good for Slutskaya - she was having a rough ride with a growth spurt, she was struggling to land the triple lutz (which had already started getting very dicey the season before) and finished so low at russian nationals that she was left off the European and World team.

That said she came back in the 1999/2000 with much more solid jumps that were even higher than before and having worked hard on the presentational aspects of her skating. To me her best seasons (certainly artistically) were from 1999 - 2001. She has learned to be such a strong competitor and hat's off for still challenging now despite being an "old lady"!!!!

That's true, but to be specific she finished 4th at Russian Nationals and also qualified for and won the bronze medal at that year's Grand Prix Final.

So I think it would be accurate to say that 1998-99 was not Slutskaya's best year and also that the depth of the Russian ladies' team was at an all-time high that year (Sokolova, who was 5th at Nationals, had also made the GPF).

As I've said before I think it is great that she is able to train and skate at such a high level with her illness. OTOH what she is doing for her Mother frankly doesn't impress me....it's called being a daughter (or son). One would have to be awfully cold hearted to not do that for a parent, or child, or sibling, or grandparent. This is not a bash of Irina but is not a recommendation for canonization either.

Every skater is different as to training habits and illnesses and injuries are different as to how they effect training and performance. While Irina's illness can be fatal it is possible to train and compete as your energy level tolerates. With injury (such as Cohen and Kwan) the injury may not be fatal but needs total rest to heal. IMO this doesn't make Irina any braver, more determined, or worthy than Kwan because she continues to train and compete with her illness.....sometimes I think that some posters are hinting at that. They are two different conditions that are treated and effect training in two different ways. In simpler terms at times a strained back or hip can effect training and competing more than vasculitis does.

Back on topic to the original question Irina is nice, loves to skate and loves her mama.....just like most of the other skaters. Irina has shown to have bad days and say things that weren't so nice....just like most of the other skaters.........except Kwan who is perfect all of the time....JUST KIDDING:p

What!?! Did you just say that you're not impressed with what she's doing for her mother?!? Que horror! Get ready to receive those "You're pathetic!" etc., etc., bashing from Irina's fans here!

I was about ignore the post. Until caught my name in it. Which force me a reply.

Ha, it was you when Irina first reported ill, made your every chance to put a cheap shot at Kwan in your defending of how hard work Irina was. And even going around the boards to propganda how brave that she was given how sickness she was.....I have to say as an moderator of her board you did a 'fabulus job' for promoting your skater. May be considering change your job to her agent?

It was you who spreaded 'grape vine rumor from the rink' at FS board implying Kwan was faking injury that she was skating full out two week right after Campbells.......As far as "grape vine rumor" goes, care me share with you some 'grape vine' rumor from Russian skating circles what's going on with your favorate? You don't have a clue! Or you do have a clue but no matter what.

As for her mom's medical bill, I read posts in another board last year from her fans, or was it you?, financially she was set for life. So I don't see the problem here, as you said she skates for the love of skating not for the money to pay for her mom's bill......Though as a daughter I like what she did for her mom. But as Piel said, I'm not that impressed. It would be cold hearted not to do anything for your parent. I've been taking care my mom financially for years now.

None of us really know whether or not Irina is a "nice" person. How can we, as we do not know her personally? I think she comes across as a thoroughly refreshing, spirited, and likeable young woman, and I admire her tenacity in remaining in the eligible ranks after so many health and personal issues.

However, is Irina really "nice"? Who knows? And frankly, who cares?!

most skaters are as nice as can be when the cameras are on. Irina is likely the rule and not the exception.

Look, guys, I've heard Irina described in terms ranging all the way from "cute, sweet, and innocent" to "brazen, arrogant, and pushy". Somehow I think the real definition of her personality lies somewhere in between. I'm sure she's not a nasty person, but she's not an angel either. And neither are any of us. Irina is a human being, flawed like the rest of us, and that's OK with me.

Personally, I hope she wins the gold medal in Torino. I admire her tenacity, determination, and her ability to come back from injuries, health issues, and family crises.

As far as I'm concerned, this lady will be the champ!

The Tenor of This Thread

You know, Irina deserves better than to have a thread entitled "Is Irina A Nice Person?" The thread is very declasse and I think we are better than this. I know Irina is.

IMO, it doesn't matter if Irina is a "nice person." She is an awesome competitor, and that's what counts to me.

Maybe a better title would be "Do you think Irina has been accurately portrayed by the press?"

IMO the title is OK. I see no need to be so PC with the thread titles unless they are threatening, and in this case it's not. JMO.
