Okay, my phone just ate my 7K post (grrr!), so this one will be brief and just focus on Jason - feel free to ask questions about everyone else.
Rosa74 and I met in Monument and went to the sendoff. It was super crowded, and Jason did Hamilton. I wish I could report he was perfectly clean, but he wasn’t. To get the bad news out of the way: he messed up 2 of his 3 jumping passes. Specifically, he fell on the 3A and doubled the plannned 3Z. Boo! I think maybe he was tired - even though he gave a good performance, it wasn’t as sparkling and energetic as we saw it at Skate Canada or the GPF. That’s probably a good thing - he needs to save that for competition- but I must admit the jump errors were a bit disconcerting so close to Nats.
The good news: there’s actually a lot of it! First, the program has grown so much since I first saw it in Milwaukee - it totally works now, even with the errors. Second, the jump errors were kind of unexpected and inexplicable. He didn’t seem at all like he was struggling with nerves or with his technique. I felt calm watching him; I wasn’t cringing, expecting him to fall. He did two huge, gorgeous, easy 3As in the warmup, and even the one he fell on looked fully rotated with good air position. The 3F-3T looked very good - rotated and no funky turnout/ over rotation. Not sure what happened with the Lutz (brain fart or too close to boards?) but after the program, he came right back out and did a beautiful tano 3Z. Third, overall his skating looks as beautiful as I’ve ever seen it - beautiful edges and flow, good speed, and except for the two he messed up, lovely jumps.
How will he skate at Nats? I don’t know. But I don’t think he’s in the same nervy place he was at NHK or even the GPF. As we left, he was patiently signing autographs for a long line of people!
Random thought: there is a roughly two block stretch of road near downtown Monument lined with tallish evergreen trees. All of them have been strung thickly with garlands of colored lights. It’s so pretty, and quite extraordinary to drive through at night - like fairyland or the Milky Way!
