Jason Brown

I agree that the Olympic hype, which started at Champs Camp, likely got in his head and he tried to do too much in one season. It happens that way for a lot of talented skaters.

On the plus side, despite it feeling like there is no plus side, this year he landed a lot of quads in practices and warm-ups that looked ok. I hope he keeps one of his programs at least for next year.

Based on his hair comments, he would have to keep the ponytail if he kept Hamilton. ;). So I guess we’ll see which is most important! But I think that it has such strong associations for him with the Olympics, that it might be hard for him to keep.

He could go back to Sam. Smith, though (cue collective groan from everyone exceptvme!). Or maybe he’ll finally do Latin!

I would love it if he kept the FS - it’s just so beautiful.

I vote for a new SP! He'll probably do Hamilton at SOI and be done with it. And I only mentioned Sam Smith for this season. No need to extend that man's terrible singing another season. ;)

I was thinking at some point watching him practice that he needed to do that Latin program ASAP. Or I wouldn't mind him going to a pure non-warhorse classical piece -- when I think about it, I've always liked his classical programs (i.e. Nessum Dorma, despite it's warhorseness, and Liebestraum from his last junior season).

And I think if he repeats Inner Love another season -- which I would be for cause it's a really awesome program -- he needs to give the epic movie soundtrack/contemporary music a break for a while after that, especially anything with the word "love" in the title, LOL. Scent of Love/Inner Love. ENOUGH. :)

Also I hope he will consider going to another choreographer for this SP. He's in Coloraldo Springs where he has access to so many choreographers. I'd love a Tom Dickson program for him. Alexander Johnson and Jason have very similar qualities, I always felt Tom did some amazing programs for him, including his Peter Gabriel program he skated the last two season -- SO AMAZING HE MADE ME CRY!

I vote to bring back the Sam Smith program AND keep Hamilton! I have a strong dislike for Inner Love and have from the first time I heard the music. It's like a funeral dirge. I lay the blame for all the recent problems squarely on that program! :slink:

I'm kind of happy that they acknowledged Jason's contributions, but he bombed the free skate. And Ross got screwed over. So confused.

Yeah, saw it in person. It's unfortunate, but agreed...Jason really did bomb the FS. After those two opening falls, it really took the wind out of his sails...and you could feel it in the arena.

Ross: I can understand why the might have gone with Adam but nonetheless feel really _bad_ for Ross.

Still gutted for Jason that he is not on the Olympic Team. My picks were Nathan, Jason, and Max, so I'm still crying! :)

Managed to get a nice photo of Jason while he was signing autographs at the autograph desk on Weds. evening. https://pic.twitter.com/64qDviy4Ah Jason, still my winner on and off the ice!!!!!

Jason was at the Friends of Figure Skating breakfast on Sun. When Ryan Bradley was introducing the skaters to the crowd so they could say a few words, he said, "Let's see how many times Jason uses the word AMAZING." It got a great laugh!

And then after Jason said his words, Ryan was like, "Jason totally got around that by saying AWESOME instead." (Or some other word that wasn't Amazing, I can't remember).

Also another funny moment from the breakfast is that I was talking to Karen Chen and I told her that her performance and grit in the FS (she had been sick and basically trying to push through it) made me tear up and Jason was passing us and said, "Me too!" Aw, he sure adores Karen, huh?

So I just checked the 4CC schedule and it's not bad.

The men's short program is at 16:35-20:57 on Thursday, which is basically 12:35 a.m. - 4:57 a.m. in my time zone (so basically 3:35-7:57 a.m.). The last group is probably going to in the 4 a.m. hour and I usually wake up at 4:30 a.m., so not a stretch for me to be up.

The free skate is where it's super ballin - Saturday afternoon, 12:30-16:37, so 8:30 p.m. to 12:37 p.m. Friday night! I have to stay up a bit late, but it's Friday night. I plan on just eating pizza and beer while watching that night. :)

(I do realize the schedule isn't as fun for those in Central or Eastern time zones)

That sounds great. My "go to" meal for middle of the night competitions is a jalapeno cheddar bagel w/ j.c. cream cheese. Don't ask me why! :) That was a great breakfast. We were sitting WAY in the back, and at first I was afraid we wouldn't see any skaters. Ryan did a good job introducing them though, and then it seemed like it broke the ice and people really mingled well.

Yeah, the room was kind of a strange layout... but yeah, Ryan was really smart to get all the skaters in one place. But it sounded like the skaters were told to walk the room and mingle (at least that's what I overheard Sean Rabbit saying to some folks at the table next to us.

I agree it was a fun breakfast and feel bad for the person who couldn't go, but grateful that he gave me his ticket -- I'm going to join FOFS before SkAm, since it's likely that I'll be going.

So random thought. A lot of people are mentioning Jason as needing to be in the show circuit and how he would do great doing shows, but it occurred to me that Jason likes performing in competition, which isn't necessarily the same as performing in a show. Obviously he has done shows and exhibitions, but other than The ICE and a handful of shows, he generally reserves his summer months for competition related stuff -- doing summer comps, getting choreography.

And any time you hear about what he wants to do post-competition, he never mentions anything about doing shows, choreography or coaching, rather he talks about things like finishing college, teaching English in Japan or doing commentary or other communications-related career. It seems he puts a lot of value in competing.

I do think if there was a pro competition circuit like we saw in the 1990s, Jason would probably do great there.

Jason loves people. I think performing for him is about communicating with people, whether it’s in competitions or shows. But yeah, he’s also quite driven and competitive. I would guess that competitions satisfy something extra in him that shows don’t. And that’s probably why he’s be so incredibly frustrated.

I hope he’s able to do well at 4CCs. The Olympic pressure will be off, but I can imagine him crashing physically from the exhaustion and disappointment. I would hate to see that happen, but if I recall, Mirai really struggled there in 2014. So I’m not gonna wish for anything specific.

Mirai was also sick with the flu, or just coming off sick with the flu. There was a TERRIBLE sickness going around San Jose that hit a lot of skaters like Alysa Liu, Karen Chen and Alexei Krasnozhon (Ashley Cain told me when I talked to her at the FOFS breakfast that he didn't get out of bed basically after the men's FS). So cross your fingers that Jason didn't catch that!

I stumbled upon this.

https://www.instagram.com/astridf777/

She's a skater visiting in Mounment and she caught some of Jason's practice today. She has a live video (click on the profile pic and pick "show live video" if you're on mobile) of the Hamilton step and a video of his 3A-3T (why couldn't he have done that at Nationals.)

Well, there might be an opening at TCC post Olympics....

When I saw TCC I thought of Team Challenge Cup (which has been cancelled this year) but you mean The Cricket Club. Heh. I hope Jason does work with a jump coach during the off season. It would not surprise me if he goes back to Frank. We all noticed an improvement in his jumps after their last training sessions.

Thoughts I've had about different choreographers for Jason (if he decides he would like to try something new):

Speaking of the Team Challenge Cup, I remember Christopher Dean cheering on the skaters at the last competition and I thought then that he could create an interesting program for Jason.

Also, since Jason is doing the full SOI tour this year, he'll be working closely with the show's choreographer on the group numbers. Is Jeffery Buttle still the choreographer? He could bring out different dimensions of Jason's artistry.

The Stanford Ronald McDonald House tweeted about Jason's visit after nationals:

I took that video! Thanks to Mrs. P for giving me her ticket.

Thanks for coming in and saying so, and thanks for the video!

On other topics, I also thought "TCC" was Team Challenge Cup. Of course, not every coach is for every skater. Adam flourished after leaving BOrser .... but it's a tempting idea.

And in news which only I will find :sad21: , but in my eyes is related to Jason, the Ethiopian restaurant near the arena where SOI will be in Allentown has closed. It was open when I bought my tickets! :drama: Oh well, there's always Tim Hortons connected to the arena itself;)

I saw a twitter post today with a link to the Celtic Thunder facebook post about Jason's Riverdance program and I was curious to see how many views it has now. It's over 19 million in less than a year!

I was also curious about the numbers for the Hamilton Musical instagram post about Jason's program and that count is almost 500,000 in five days!

RE 4CC: While I feel for Ross and don't agree with the USFS decision in his case, his withdrawal and Grant's addition does mean we get Jason and Grant adventures in Taipei. :)
