Jason Brown

I still liked it a lot! Especially seeing it in person — I thought it made better use of his lines. Alas we will probably won’t be seeing that program again, so that’s that as far as the costume.

These athletes are tough as nails. Winning and getting better is their goal. Look where Adam is now! I am just saying.

Adam and Jason are two very different people.

And while I’m sure Raf helped Adam in many ways, I think Adam basically willed himself to be an Olympian.

Beyond that, I think Adam is where he is right now because of his personality, wit, and drive to make the most of the opportunities he’s been given.

I do feel like there's some art in-terms of managing a good coaching relationship with Raf. Even star student Nathan had some bumps with Raf and he wasn't immune from being slightly thrown under the bus by him after his Olympic struggles.

And I agree that Adam willed himself the last few years.

I'm still very much in favor of Anthony Liu. His work with Tatsuki Machida and Chih-i Taso has been great.

Also also if he looking at Toronto and Brian O. is a no go, I think Lee Barkell would be great -- he was Noburnari Oda's long-time coach and is also one of Gabby Daleman's coaches.

Yeah I’m with you on Anthony Liu and Lee Barkell. I love the idea of the training team at TCC. I could also maybe see Audrey W. Other than that...

I wonder if he has decided what he’s doing and isn’t yet ready to go public, or if he still hasn’t made up his mind.

I wonder how his ankle is.

I wonder when he’ll start his season (senior B?) and whether he will be asked back to NHK yet again.

Also, I'd be open to going back (back only in the sense that he was once part of the 7k coaching team) to Vincent Restencourt. I been impressed with his work with Ting Cui (though there's word she's going to a new coach -- I can't recall who or where I heard that).

Is Gracie working with Vincent, or is she just at that rink? I remember being impressed with Ting even before Vincent. I think it was when she was with Chris Conte.

I don't know regarding Gracie.

As for Ting, I agree that she was already good with Chris Conte, but I do feel like she improved under Vincent's coaching. Speaking of which, Chris Conte is also another option.

...who is working with Priscilla Hill. Going around in circles.

Though I am not a devoted Jason fan, I like him a lot to recognize that his problem is not having a coach to stroke his ego, but a coach to teach him the quad. His skating has the rest , though he can be faster. That’s why I say Raf. In my ipinion Raf is the best we have here in America. Maybe his way is rough for some of you, but for me coming from Europe his attitude is that of an average European. I am here to teach you, you listen, you learn and now go and do it. He is the ‘I am not your best friend, or momma kind of coach’. I am sure that approach doesn’t work for some skaters, but it is what it is. It was just an idea from my part. Again who knows what might work for Jason. I wish him and his fans a great season!

Thanks for your thoughts, Georgia. Speaking only for myself, I agree with you that Jason needs a coach to teach him a quad and not to stroke his ego. And I think that’s what Jason is seeking. But different people learn differently and thrive in different environments, and what has worked for Nathan and Adam will not necessarily work best for Jason or other skaters.

My personal concerns with Raf have nothing to do with his reputation for being no nonsense and more to do more with the fact that (1) he already has a ton of elite skaters, including Nathan (who as a Yale student thousands of miles away may require special time and energy); (2) his students apparently need to compete for his attention at the rink every day rather than having regular lesson times; (3) he’s made or blessed some questionable (in my view) choices with respect to his students’ training and programs; and (4) he has sometimes inappropriately (in my view) publicly discussed issues in his relationships with his skaters that (in my view) should remain private. That said, if Jason decides to work with Raf, I will wish and hope that it turns out to be a great experience for him.

On the iPhone (no cable or internet after our storm) and can’t “like” or find emojis .... :(

A coach at times *needs* to be a parent and a best friend. A truly great coach knows that, and doesn’t come off as nothing but tough tough tough. And my friends from Europe don’t particularly find a “tough as nails” coach the way to go, in fact I would say less so than me. :) I have other issues with Raf, and I don’t think he would be a good fit.

But Jason is an adult and will figure it out for himself, and he thinks Raf is a good fit, then [insert cheer emoji]

ETA: still no internet :disapp: but spousal unit set up a WiFi hot spot using the data plan from his phone, and back on the iPad at least. He really is a champ, much like Jason:laugh:

I would go with Orser. Proven track record with quads AND packaging. Top notch training facility with on-site choreographer. Jason would be surrounded by elite and Olympic athletes which could be very motivating. Although not overly important but a nice perk; he would also be relatively close to family in Chicago.

From what I've always heard, Brian appears to be nice guy. I always enjoy watching him with his students in the Kiss and Cry.

Ahhhhh....if only I was a betting woman.....

Hey, @el henry ... Jason's performance of Can't Stop the Feeling from your show has been uploaded to youtube. Maybe you can see yourself in the crowd.

I discovered my new phone could be a WiFi hot spot a few weeks ago when I lost internet connection. It wasn't a storm in my case though. The pole where my cable connects is across the street and an oversized vehicle severed it while I was at work. :scowl:

Orser would be amazing but I think he’s very selective and only takes a limited number of people. So it might not be an option.

I think temperament-wise he would make a good fit for sure! However there are several factors at play here:

Brian asks the most affected skaters he's already coaching if they are ok with a potential newcomer (I doubt Yuzuru has any personal problems with Jason, but I also can't pretend to know whether he'd say yes or no)

Even before it would get to that stage: Brian only takes skaters that he feels he can take much farther. His friend Doug Haw has said that if he deems a skater "maxed out" or close to it, he will not take them on. Not saying that Jason is, but in Brian's case he might look at how much he could help Jason with quads (or Ghislain really, his jump coach) depending on what has been causing the problem. Artistically Jason is already fantastic, so it might come down to the jump diagnosis.

Brian has said that he now only takes skaters for a minimum of a year and a half. He believes in slow, daily changes that may alter how a skater jumps and will take adjustment. The first season will show growing pains. Brian really dislikes coach hopping. So I bet he'd have to feel that Jason would be with him, barring injury, for at least a couple seasons, probably more.

Brian also dislikes parents who try to coach. Not sure how involved Jason's parents are in his skating life, beyond that they clearly travel with him some of the time and seem very loving. If they are supportive of Jason but let the coach be the coach, then no problems. Rumour has it that Nam left because of his father clashing with Brian. Again, that was just rumour, but Brian has said more than once that he doesn't permit parents to act as coaches.

So Jason would have to pass Brian's assessment for long-term growth, which could be tricky as he is an older skater who already is wonderful artistically. He'd have to have supportive but not overbearing parents, and then if all was well, Yuzuru would have to say yes (Brian might also ask his younger men, but as the most senior of Brian's senior men he definitely would be consulted).

Cn't help thinking how wonderful Yuzu and Jason would be training together, though....

Thanks for the video; it looks great and of course Jason looks great. :agree:Unfortunately it says Hershey as the location, so my smiling face will not be seen  I probably would have driven to Hershey (80 miles) for Jason, but I waited for him to come even closer. I do feel a little bad for the devoted SOI attendees in Philadelphia; they reserved Hershey early and then Allentown was added, and we were closer to Philadelphia. Of course, Allentown is the city next to mine, so laziness paid off for me:biggrin:

Very insightful post. I think Jason’s family is super supportive but pretty hands off with coaches. I wouldn’t think there would be an issue with Yuzuru (though what do I know) so I’d guess the question would be if Brian thought he could help him.

TCC seems like an amazing environment but the important thing is to have a coach who believes he can help you.

Oops. :dumb: At least I got the state right and it was a great pre-injury performance by Jason.

I saw Anthony Liu's name show up upthread and I'm wondering if he still coaching in the LA area. I vaguely remember reading two years ago that he was sued by his business partner after the Ice Castle shutdown and also something like he was interested in running a rink in China, but I never tried to follow that story afterward.
