Jason Brown

I find Jason to be very genuine. He seems so real with his kindness. He doesn't seem fake at all.

I was listening to TSL and I discovered he was not at Worlds?
Why I had this idea that I saw him skate at Worlds?! :rolleye:

USFSA Sent Max and Jeremy to Worlds and Jason and Jeremy to the Olympics. Similarly, they originally assigned Caydee Denney and John Coughlin to worlds instead of Felicia Zhang / Nathan Bartholomay, but Caydee got injured. It is not unprecedented for them to do this, can is often seen as a way to spread things around. I don't think it was intended as a slight on Jason, more of a give Max something situation. It gave him a chance to keep his world ranking up and what not.

No, I know, it's not that. It's just that I was so convinced to have seen him at worlds.
Maybe I was still stuck with the Olympics with thim. :)

Also, I think it was a clear indication that they weren't doing a total buy-in of Jason yet and that Max still had some favor with the USFSA (as Caydee and John did). They did not extend that same favor to either Mirai in Ladies or Hubbell/Donohue.

Thanks for all the geography lessons on Monument! But IIRC, Jason actually still lives in Colorado Springs right, since he's at the Olympic Training Center? So still going to classes at UCCS probably is still ideal, I'm guessing.

The training center is on the northern edge of Colorado Springs so closer to monument than say the heart of it. 7K is also on the southern end of Monument, so yeah, it all kinda blends together.

I think Jason started in Monument then moved to the training center after fame hit. To be honest I somewhat assume that is the "official" story and the reality may be somewhere between none of our business and who the heck knows. I assume he has a place at the OTC, but would not be surprised if he has other non-disclosed beds he uses as well. I got the impression Kori was in Monument though. I can't help but think she likely is the type that would want to live near and convenient to her home rink. The interstate (I-25) runs literally through the heart of Denver, and pretty much the same with the springs (though I am less familiar with the area) and Monument is an exit along the way. So really all of it is pretty easy. I used to work about 15-20ish minutes east of the train/parking/shopping area I mentioned and we occasionally had clients from Colorado Springs, often enough to not seem noticeable or interesting. Even the OTC's location is such that it would be worth looking at flights out of DIA as well for instance. I am on the south west side of Denver Suburbia and as I said had family that lived there for a bit and driving down for an early lunch at the Broadmoor and then heading home was perfectly doable, and did not eat up the entire day.

Yes Colorado Springs is closer/more convenient, but Denver is bigger and has more. . . stuff, and is easily close enough and convenient enough to be a perfectly reasonable option for anything they need. Overall it is a pretty good set up for them like you said.

Oh yeah, I just read a story about how the Coloraldo Springs airport is struggling because everyone there just goes to Denver to fly.

http://gazette.com/terminal-case-co...years-after-buildings-opening/article/1539787

Denver is a hub I know is a hub for Frontier and United, so I bet they do fly more out of Denver than COS.

I always wanted to visit Denver! I only been to Fort Collins to visit a friend who was at Colorado State.

Since you're so close, you ought to visit the rink and watch him practice. (And maybe give us a quad report?)

.... I think he may like winning more than he likes skating. ....

Not going to try to respond to all the Max-related comments in this Jason thread.

But I can't let this one go. I know you like Max, but it seems like a cheap shot at him, IMO. Sure Max wants to win, but he loves to skate just as much as Jason does.

(p.s. I do not think Max is miserable. Missing Sochi must have been a bitter pill to swallow, but that doesn't mean he is miserable.)

I know Tom Z sent a pic from the Colorado Springs airport for cup of Russia here recently. I was actually surprised they were flying from the springs to Russia. Which airline is the official one? United? That would actually make a lot of sense then to just fly out of Denver as so many flights are likely to just be United connecting to other places.

Plus if they fly out of Denver they can pass by this lovely beast we have nicked-named Blucifer. Seriously, that thing is walking distance (as in you can saunter over and take pics before getting chased off by security) from the road right by the airport.

Denver is a interesting place, kinda a bit of everything. I'm happy enough here, (though the weather is interesting). It is much more friendly here than on the western slope where I grew up.

I don't think I will be stalking Jason any time soon. I did toss around the idea of going to the open house they had a few months back, but still that seemed more for kids and I did not want to be a weirdo. Still would have been neat to see. I kinda figure if i keep my ears and eyes out some other opportunity may crop up. Had I know he was letting people take pictures wearing his medal I likely would have drug my better half down to the mini Olympic center even they had a while back.

I am sorry if you felt it was a cheap shot but I promise it was not, (but thank you for saying so, I rather know how i come across). It was not meant to say he did not enjoy skating, you can clearly see that in exhibitions. But just because you love something, does not mean other feelings may eclipse it. If your desire to win is so strong, you can almost only be happy with gold, then it can be hard to enjoy competing unless you really are the best. I do like Max, which is part of why I don't like seeing him looking so glum lately. I would say he needs to train closer to Jason but. . . well they already train next door practically. I just want to see him smile more, I like his smile. I am just going to hope you are right, that he is not miserable, and is still happy with his sport, just maybe a bit serious and hard on himself.

Yeah, I was mostly kidding. I sort of don't want to be to EAGER of a fan, so if I was in your position, I'd probably wouldn't want to doing that either.

As for the open house -- you should have found a cute kid to bring, LOL. ;) And you're probably right, some opportunity will come about.

Well it looks like United still flies out of COS. To Denver, of course, but also LA and San Francisco. Some people just prefer not make the drive, I guess.

I have never had the opportunity to see any figure skating in person, so i will take your word for it on the back flip. But I still have soft spot for them and likely always will.

I agree that Max's issue are from within, but he still seems so unhappy so often. Maybe he is just dealing with some disillusionment about the whole thing.

As much as he may have been annoyed seeing Jeremy throw away his chance, seeing quadless Jason likely did not help any. The same people telling Max he was not the right kind of skater were the same people telling Jason he needed the quad. It was openly acknowledge that USFSA wanted the men doing quads. Max obeyed that directive. He also came back with more traditional programs. In short, Max did what he was told to do and what he was told the powers that be wanted him to do, he tried to play by the rules and cooperate. Jason on the other hand listened to Kori and co rather than USFSA (likely a smart move as I don't know how often USFSA is right at this point). There has to be some confusion and frustration feeling like you did what you were told you were supposed to do, only to be beaten by someone who just kinda did their own thing. How can he not have some feelings of "Ummm you told us we had to have at least one quad?" How can he not start to question why he listened to them in the first place and wondering what to do next. How could he not take anything USFSA says to him now with a bit more cynicism? If they so quickly and easily change their mind about needing a quad, what else are they going to change their mind on when it is convenient to them? Makes it hard to know what to do when you don't feel like you can trust what you are being told.

Maybe we will see a new weird pattern emerge.

Maybe it will be
2015 Gold to Dornbush
2016 Gold to Rippon
2017 Gold to Max or Ross (Ross would be pattern, but who knows how much he will stick around, plus he was not really sudden success he had two prior bronzes)
2018 Gold to Jason (Yes I would be fine with him not getting gold till 2018, so long as he gets it in 2018 when it really counts.

Apparently Jason was also told by USFSA that he would "never medal on the GP without a quad". And then he did at TEB 2013. Maybe that was the turning point, when they started thinking hey, this kid might be something after all...

Thank you! I'm so loving these videos - when he said "I want to cry" - I felt that... so do I! And that's funny because I'm not usually a "cryer", so I must assume it was his emotion being communicated to me... I'm so glad for him. :)
OMG! That intelligent and cute eyes! That hand-communication!
Nice person! But less hair gel and more curls, please!

I watched all six episodes. More minutes pass Jason is always more natural and genuine... he is a fantastic, nice character!

Some time machine reading for you all: http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...s-JGP-Brisbane&p=579852&viewfull=1#post579852

Start at that post and read on. This was after Jason won his first JGP more than four years ago. You practically can replace "3A" with quad and you have the comments were seeing now, lol.

But even as a fan back then, I'd never imagined that Jason would be at this place now back then.

I don't think Lysacek had reliable 3A. Buttle was more obvious.

Patrick Chan proved that a skater with the powerful federation support and 3 quads could have a chance to become a world champion with ONE clean 3A. But the judges might be less generous if a rival with 2 different quads and solid 3A takes the challenge. The Lysacek (Buttle) phenomenon is the thing of the past. THAT won't happen in foreseeable future. Many people agree that new rules on jumps are introduced to prevent such things to happen again.

Even for juniors, no man won a JW medal without 3A in past two years. Let's see Jason Brown can be an "exception".

One of the posts. He was the exception. :) love when we can look back and see when the doubters are proven wrong.

eta: more time machine posts!

It was a joke- the height was not really relevent. 3A's are in SP's and LP's. It'd be odd to save a 3A for LP when they are needed in both SPs and LPs. He was the only one not to try a 3A in his SP. The not trying of the jump is the most negative for his career in singles if he wants to have one and skate in seniors. I don't know what his career plans are and if he wants to continue after Jr.

He's like every skater at 16. He wants to go to the Olympics. So he'll keep trying to learn the 3A.

And he did. On both counts. :)

Post after winning JGPF:

Brown really put the junior in this competition. I mean based on this everyone has a future in seniors skating except him.

:laugh2:

Great quotes Mrs P!

These days, whenever I want to doubt somebody and write something along the lines of "never going to happen" I actually think about Jason and all the people who said he'd never get the 3A.... and then I don't write it :)

Having faith in a skater means never giving up on them. I know this well, the faith that you place in the ones you have chosen, even if sometimes that means you're breaking down in sobs in front of your computer, or your television - the lost sleep, the broken heart, the way your heart accelerates, the way you plead at the screen that please, let it be his turn, let the darkness be over. And some days, they answer. Some days, you are left picking up the pieces of your heart again and counting until the next time you can sit there and hope that it's their time. And then when their time does come, it's the most incredible, giddy feeling of joy...

Might as well point this out:

1 93.92 Javier FERNANDEZ ESP ISU GP Rostelecom Cup 2014 14.11.2014
2 93.39 Tatsuki MACHIDA JPN ISU GP Hilton HHonors Skate America 2014 24.10.2014
3 90.33 Sergei VORONOV RUS ISU GP Rostelecom Cup 2014 14.11.2014
4 85.96 Maxim KOVTUN RUS ISU GP Lexus Cup of China 2014 07.11.2014
5 83.59 Jason BROWN USA Nebelhorn Trophy 2014 25.09.2014
6 82.95 Yuzuru HANYU JPN ISU GP Lexus Cup of China 2014 07.11.2014
7 82.57 Takahito MURA JPN ISU GP Skate Canada International 2014 31.10.2014
8 81.82 Jeremy ABBOTT USA ISU GP Hilton HHonors Skate America 2014 24.10.2014
9 81.70 Konstantin MENSHOV RUS ISU GP Skate Canada International 2014 31.10.2014
10 81.38 Takahiko KOZUKA JPN ISU GP Rostelecom Cup 2014 14.11.2014

Season's best for the SP. And you are not imaging things. Currently Jason's SB is higher than Yuzuru Hanyu, LOL. This will likely only last another week.

It will be interesting to see if Richard Dornbush can crack into the top 10 with a 81+ score and if Kovtun can join the 90+ club. And if Machida can beat Fernandez for No. 1.

Other season's bests: Jason's FS is #8 and overall #11.
