Jason Brown

Mrs. P

Get out of my head. . . i was jut looking at that on Wikipedia. His FS is higher than Hanyu's as well but I don't take joy in that. You know for all the doom and gloom, he is doing amazing well for a so called disappointing season.

Great mind think alike i guess. . . and have good taste!

I guess so! Well the 83+ score is from Nebelhorn, so that's a long time ago and the less-clean skaters are in front of people's minds.

He's not doing bad, but I can see why people would think it would be disappointing. He scored 80+ on both his GPs last season and this year he scored under 80 in the SP of both his GPs.

However, there are some improvements.

Average FS TES 2013 (Nebelhorn, SA, TEB):73.56 (73.80, 68.69, 78.20)
Average FS TES 2014 (Nebelhorn, SA, RC): 74.13 (67.74, 74.06, 80.58)

And he got two ratified 3As in the FS, first time since Jr. Worlds 2013.

The Average FS TES in the SP this season is much worse, however

Average 2013: 44.73 (43.38, 44.85, 45.98)
Average 2014: 40.23 (43.50,39.94,37.26)

So we're in a glass half-full, half-empty situation. However, I've seen worse numbers and none of this matters if he peaks later in the season.

The thing that I am looking at is that his worst SP score of his senior career is is 76.32. Max's personal best is is only 78.96. Dornbush's short PB is actually 83.01, but his total PB is only 237.28 (Max's is 240.22). Jason's total for SA & COR were 234.17 and 235.56 respectively. So basically a "disappointing" season for Jason means scores that are actually competitive with our other top skaters when they are at their best. Umm. . . I think that is pretty damn impressive!

He has also had a weird season. One of the articles regarding Shep Goldberg said that his lack of attendance at Skate America was when people first started thinking he may not be doing well. So his health likely was affecting Jason at that event too. Jason likely had far too many well meaning people asking him what was wrong. Leaving Jason to either have to lie if he did know more, or be reminded that he does not know what is going on with his agent. Either way, not fun, and a likely added stress that others did not have to face. And that is on top of the added attention he was dealing with for it being in Chicago. It really would have been nice for him to get to compete in a more normal grand prix competition this season.

At the same time it likely is good practice to learn to skate with horrible pressie, as 2018 is going to be a nightmare. Dick Button is the only USA male to win two Olympic medals, granted there were both gold, but still only two. Beatrix Loughran has won three medals, but she is both a female and one of the medals was in pairs (no gold). Davis and White have three, but they are not individual skaters (one of each). So with Jason's bronze from Sochi, and assuming team USA does not completely implode on itself and still has a strong shot at a team medal, if Jason is a legitimate contender for any individual medal (not at all unrealistic) the line we are going to be hearing all season is going to be a variation of "Can Jason Brown become the most decorated Olympic singles/male (depending on how they choose to interpret Beatrix and if somehow Ashley or Gracie make it) in USA history!?" Kinda crazy hugh? Hell, two golds are not completely out of the realm of possibility which would put him ahead of Davis and White! Or at least he could be marketed as such. Obviously it is a bit different with the team event, but a medal is a medal. Team medals count in other sports, anyway you slice it or spin it, he has a chance to come out of 2018 with more Olympic medals than any other guy from America in history. Assuming nothing comes along to derail him, the potential hype going in to Pyonchang could be either really nasty or really awesome depending on how you look at it. Maybe the stressful attention of this season will help him to be more able to cope with what is to come.

I think a lot of people think his goals are about 2015, and forget that really team Jason is about 2018. If you look at it somehow only for the season, maybe i can see some of the disappointment. If you look it as a skater still only on their second year as a senior who is looking to establish himself at the start of a new quad for the entire quad, it looks a lot better. I don't see a skater on a downward slide, I see a skater who is pushing himself to grow still, and issues are being addressed as they come up.

I would say he has laid down a pretty solid argument that he should be on the team for worlds this year which is plenty good enough for me this year. Only Dornbush has a chance at having a better season (well technically Jeremy, but he would have to get Gold in Japan to beat Jason, or Silver to tie which I am just not too optimistic about).

Speaking of Ricky Richard. I was watching one of the videos from his appearance at world's when he was 19 (Jason's age), the commenters were clucking about him not trying a quad. And his quad is looking pretty good this year, so yes nay sayers guys can still get it. I half want some guy to land a quint just so we can maybe stop blathering on about quads, but that likely will not happen.

Back to the "beauty on ice" Russian website, looking at photos since I don't read Russian (Cyrillic being based on Greek, I can dope out the letters, but not knowing the language, letters don't help:rolleye:

Jason appears to be signing a flag that the Shib sibs have also signed? But they weren't at CoR? It is possible this group is just saving the flag (how cool). And there is a signature I do not recognize....

The Shibutanis have competed in Russia twice. In 2011, at Worlds and in 2012 at Rostelecom Cup. So it could from either of those visits. I agree it's cool they're saving the flag.

I think though, from Jason's POV, he's probably still disappointed. He probably isn't thinking too much about how he is preforming to other skaters. That's never been his M.O. His thing is if he practices the programs the way he trains them, then he's happy and whatever placement he got was a bonus (he's also said as much).

For example in 2012 Junior Worlds, he is absolutely thrilled to get bronze despite being FAR behind either Han Yan or Joshua Farris. He had skated two very clean programs, but Josh and Han just had stronger technical content that was fully executed. Still, Jason and Kori knew they did all they could.

After the whole Rostelecom Cup SP, Kori's instagram made a point that it was an tough week caped with an imperfect skate. Not much was made of the fact that he was out of the final group or his placement. Rather that he underperformed relative to his abilities.

But yes, you are correct that relatively speaking Jason is not doing too bad, especially considering that as of right now he still has the highest SP score this season, though Richard's score bumps Jason's SA score out of the top 5. Jeremy and Ross have a shot at having two top 5 SP scores at NHK.

Richard's situation is a bit different than Jason's, as that Richard opted to try to put in the quad right away (2011-2012) and never really had it consistent. I feel this is a coaching thing -- Tammy Gammill is a great basics coach, which is why you see a lot of her students do well in the lower levels, but I felt she doesn't do as well discerning when or when not to do something. For example, she should have never let Richard try to do two different quads when he couldn't get even one type of quad consistent. Richard, gladly has seen the error in his way, and has focused on just getting one quad down. This season is the first time where I thought it was somewhat consistent. So I guess that's more of case for Jason not to put it right away.

Ummm, the Shibutanis competed in Russia in 2014 as well ... at a little event in a place called Sochi. ;)

The mystery signature looks as if it could be Jeremy Abbott's, IMO.

... I do like Max, which is part of why I don't like seeing him looking so glum lately. I would say he needs to train closer to Jason but. . . well they already train next door practically. I just want to see him smile more, I like his smile. I am just going to hope you are right, that he is not miserable, and is still happy with his sport, just maybe a bit serious and hard on himself.

Thx, Stitch. I would agree with your distinction that Max can look rather serious and intense on the ice as he is warming up and as he is skating his program. As opposed to temporarily looking glum in the Kiss and Cry, which is a natural and appropriate response after a rough skate. We do see Max's smile at other times, and it is one of the best smiles around -- right up there with Jason's.

Having faith in a skater means never giving up on them. I know this well, the faith that you place in the ones you have chosen, even if sometimes that means you're breaking down in sobs in front of your computer, or your television - the lost sleep, the broken heart, the way your heart accelerates, the way you plead at the screen that please, let it be his turn, let the darkness be over. And some days, they answer. Some days, you are left picking up the pieces of your heart again and counting until the next time you can sit there and hope that it's their time. And then when their time does come, it's the most incredible, giddy feeling of joy...

Thx for the eloquent post, karne.

... Last year he had to skate right after Max had just thrown the gauntlet the length of the ice...

(OT: Still only last year that that happened.)

Ohhhh .... don't cry for Max ... he has had ups and downs since Omaha Nats, but it was only three weeks ago that he won the bronze at Skate Canada.

Jason and he -- and perhaps Richard -- still would make a good dream team for 2015 Worlds.

Oh duh, of course. :)

But I guess I was thinking when they were in Moscow -- cause if the fan group were able to do so in Sochi, they would probably have captured Jason's signature then. :)

And Jeremy Abbott also competed in Rostelecom Cup I think in 2011 and 2012

Thx, Mrs. P. The physics book is waaay cool. Can the long time JB followers tell us what program that is from?

And thanks to all for pointing out that the flag could have been more than a year old. Duh.:slink:

TEB could have used Jason this year. Jes sayin'....

Flashback time! That is from his 2011 SP to Baliwood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaTW6dT3Yjc

And no joke about TEB! Jason would have placed 4th (and 2nd) in the FS with his score and actually just missing the podium. CRRAAZZY.

On the plus side. . . he may end up in the GPF after all. Machida and Kovtun will make it along with Javi. Ten has the same points, but Jason wins the tie breaker for a higher finish at SA. So that leave NHK where Jeremy Abbot would need either a gold or silver with a higher score than Jason to beat Jason. That leaves. Mura, Voronov and Hanyu. Leaving Jason likely our first alternate or making the GPF if Hanyu decides to let his poor body take a vacation.

And since Jordan got mentioned Mariah Bell got a 57.08 and is in second place after the short. Go team Kori!

Given recent events, nothing would surprise me anymore. I could totally see the evil twins of Mura and Voronov showing up. It's a slim chance, IMO, but still surprising that it's even that, all things considered!

Also I just popped into Midwestern feed and saw Mariah Bell bot 117+ in the FS and 174+ overall. Yay!

Both Jordan Moeller and Mariah Bell won their sectionals. Glad to see Jason will have his friends to go to nationals with him.

Another thing that reminded me of Plushy was what Mrs P said:

"He probably isn't thinking too much about how he is preforming to other skaters. That's never been his M.O. "

Plushy always said he only competed with himself; also in one interview he added something that I found quite illuminating, he said that if he had had worried about what the other skaters were doing, he'd have lost to everybody. (or words to that effect.)

And add to that what Mr Mishin said he always told his students: "You can only lose to yourself."

He sat a few rows in back of me at the FS. His voice is so distinctive that I didn't even need to turn around to figure out who was cheering MB on! She was quite lovely, by the way, and Jordan & Alexander Johnson were great too.

Sounds like the Midwestern sectionals in Chicago this year had some great skates; so jealous:biggrin:
