Jason Brown

Thank you Sabinfire!

I misremembered - it wasn't as bad as I thought. I mean there's a difference between "not his best" and "not good" (although the first is often used to imply the latter). I still don't get how they got even THAT from his expression?

I love how Terry is still saying, "He's got a chance to medal on the world stage!" while there's a graphic at the bottom of the screen saying:

Season's Best: 167.35 | Points To Beat: 189.58

That was the part where I shouted "You know nothing" at my TV :D

I agree, it's not quite as bad as I thought. Tara did say she loved the new costume and she did say he did a good short program. Johnny did say he had a good take off for the first triple axel. They did say he has to be perfect and rely on his execution. The problem was in the way they set it up, that he had a chance to medal when in fact he would have needed 183 or something (far more than Josh got at 4CCwith a quad) to pass Denis. Simply not realistic. They also started off with Tracy saying how he would be remembered for his artistry. Except he's not retiring just yet so that was weird. What they didn't say was anything positive about his skating - he got really good +GOE on quite a few elements including the 3F-3T, step and Choreo sequence, spins and 3z. And they say here's the 3F -3T but don't say it's good! However on hearing it I think it's more that they were sticking to a poor script than that they necessarily hate him. Perhaps they didn't want to confuse the viewers by mentioning the standing ovation or things he did well. The script was, we might get a medal. Oh no, we didn't and here's why. And they briefly mention Sochi and the fact it's his first worlds. They would have done better to make the script remember this guy from Riverdance? Look where he is now and where he's going, even though he's not there yet. ;)

You can do both!

Jason Brown FS (NBC's Road to the Podium) - 2015 Worlds

Sorry for the janky editing... I have to entertain myself somehow...

I love it! and no need to apologize, entertain yourself all you want, we enjoy the ride.

Listening again. . . it is just weird. I am wondering if someone did tell them to say something semi negative to explain it because earlier in the program they were much kinder, then suddenly catty, then Tara tacks on something at the end "but he did good" it was all very strange.

I agree the numbers and "chance to medal" two weeks later is just silly.

Oh I wouldn't go so far as to call it hate - but the nitpicking (issues with tech, consistency/goes not there) was excessive compared to the actual performance. Combine that with the obvious lack of any positive comment apart from choreo and dress - which are not related to Jason's ability or execution - and Johnny does come across as bitter and very possibly envious/resentful. It's not a great look.

Okay, in case anyone was curious, the maximum amount of +GOE Jason could have received for that program, assuming everything is level 4 = 26.1.

What he actually received: 8.86 (-2.83 GOE)

Maximum base value: 76.23.

His actual base value: 70.51. (5.72 lost)

76.23+26.1 102.33.

So yes, technically, Jason mathematically could have enough to medal.

However...even if the program was clean with full BV, again 76.23 ---to make up the rest of the difference, he would have had to received 22.57 in +GOE to beat Denis Ten by .1 of a point (assuming PCS is exactly the same).

I don't know of ANY man who has received that much +GOE EVER.

BV proved to be key here. Not only did Jason lose BV, the top three guys retained all or enough of their planned BV to keep the gap. Ten and Fernandez, in fact, earned all their planned BV (though lost a few points in execution). Hanyu lost 9.2 points on the doubled 2S (that was planned to be a 4S), but he was nearly 10 points above Jason in BV.

Jason ended up placing 8th in BV.

Denis - 85.44
Javi - 86.73
Yuzuru - 81.42
Maxim- 80.84
Nam -80.26
Takahikko- 77.14
Misha - 73.04
Jason - 70.51
Han-70.35
Josh 68.54
Takahito - 68.35
Adam - 66.95

Jason had the highest +GOE among all the men, but by not by a lot and definitely not a lot to make up the gap from the top men.
Jason 8.86
Denis 8.03
Nam 8.02
Rippon 7.98
Florent 7.39
Yuzuru 6.82
Javi 7.37
Misha 5.69
Takahito 4.68
Farris 4.06
Maxim 2.48
Takahikko -.32

Well it was only less than a point higher! Clearly that is not good enough

Mrs P this is why we love you, such a better way of looking at things.

Aw thanks. :)

This does shed light, yet again, why one might opt to go for the quad with not great execution rather than boost execution without the jump. +GOE is really at the subjective opinion of a judge while BV is pretty cut and dry. Rotate a quad toe, get 10.3 points.

But again, it comes down to good old strategy, timing and goals.

So now that we have (maybe) put to rest TaraandJohnnygate, what do we think about WTT? How much time and energy will Jason devote in cheering on his teammates in garish red, white and blue? Will he master the new entrance to his 3A and skate two perfectly clean programs to end the season?

Oh, I am sure he will be the most energetic crazy awesome cheerleader in the kiss and cry! He's probably got it all planned out already - and I imagine quite a bit of his luggage allowance went to his Team USA gear (like the flag onesie!).

I hope he can have two great skates to finish the year. It would be awesome!

Okay I listened to the NBC footage. I was prepared for the worst and that wasn't bad as I thought. Actually, I thought Tara's commentary was fine -- especially since she mentioned the power of the choreography as being his best and also appreciated that she mentioned Kori's work on the new entrance.

I found it odd that the only thing that Johnny could compliment him on was the new costume and the fact that Rohene Ward choreographed an "elegant program that is so Jason..." There's nothing elegant about romantic tragedy, buddy! And nitpicking a 3A that got +GOE didn't make much sense either.

And the lack of context regarding Jason and Denis gap was probably the greatest criticism I have. Yes, there was a 1.5 point gap between him and Denis after the SP, but Denis then scored a 181+ and a 267+ in the FS and overall and Jason's FS PB up to that point was like 167+ so with an 84+ would only equal 251+ at best, so basically would have to find another 16+ points somewhere without the BV of a quad.

Well Evan is already counting on him

.@Evan_Bates captains US team at World Team Trophy, counts on @jasonbskates' cheers: "He has endless energy & can scream w/the best of them"

Hah hah so true - I went to midwest sectionals this year and was happily watching Mariah Bell either right before or after she skated. Suddenly I heard shrieks of "Mariah, Mariah " behind me. I recognized the voice before I ever turned around ! ;)

This is exactly my beef with them: the only compliments they could muster were to his costumer and choreoghrapher (and Tara about Kori). Like he himself did nothing worthy of positive remark.

If you heard that commentary on the radio, you'd think he bombed.
