Jason Brown

Your sleuthing is impressive! I stopped after I got led on a wild goose chase to a high school orchestra.

I. . . kinda wish Rohene had not mentioned Gatsby though, it is not likely to be reminiscent of what anyone else is doing but people are already commenting on Gatsby numbers.

Actually, having Shazam do the listening for me made the job a lot easier! There was NO way I was going to find the song on my own. It did take some searching to realize that it was the U2 song. I didn't realize it was a cover until I listened at the other songs on the album and identified they were covers of other songs (the first song on the album is a cover of "Rumor Has It" by Adele, for example).

He looked at one point to be doffing a hat - I wonder if they'll dress him something like the pictures in Skating magazine? Although those were probably more 40s than 20s...

A hat is a prop and not allowed, so no hat.

So to sum up post in programs thread: Jason's music is Gatsby-style cover of "Love is Blindness" by U2 (from 1991 Achtung Baby album). AKA, not the movie soundtrack.

Basically similar treatment to that of Postmodern Jukebox, which has gained popularity on YouTube (and beyond) for its vintage covers of modern songs.

And that suddenly explains the hint that Rohene dropped before.

Thanks for the detective work Mrs. P. :)

In thinking about the music, I remembered that just over a year ago he attended a Gatsby themed prom with his friend and former housemate Karina Manta:

(As an aside, love, love, love her dress.)

The music is a great fit for his personality and U2 is my favorite band (even if the song is an altered, cover version) so I'm happy and looking forward to seeing the completed program.

This video is in such an early stage of the creation of the program. I am sure there will be changes and fine tuning. It seems like a piece Jason can have fun with and bring a lot of his trademark charisma and charm. I look forward to the final product. I don't think he will disappoint his fans.

Those fast side to side steps with swinging arms remind me of juke.

It actually reminded me more of a quickstep, which would fit the period style. Clever use of dance choreography for a singles skater. I do admire Rohene's work.

The comments on Facebook said it has some ice dance compulsory quickstep stuff in there, so i think you are on the right track. I would actually like to see how much of it is in there, I think it is interesting to stick some of that in a singles routine. I think the part at 1:09 might be what they are talking about. I think i have seen that cute little hop before.

I actually think adding some dance chirography to it is a great idea that will come across wonderfully.

BTW, the clip is already up to almost 5k views.

I'm not a dance expert by any means but here's a few examples of the quickstep/Finnstep move similar to Jason's. In 1995 the Finnish dance team of Rahkamo & Kokko performed the quickstep in their original dance. Their dance is now known as the Finnstep and was the required pattern for the 2013/14 short dance. The dance move Jason does at around 1:10 is at 1:24 in the Rahkamo/Kokko video and at 3:31 in the Davis/White video.

I am really looking forward to seeing how Rohene incorporates more of the quickstep feel into the program.

Thanks for the lesson! And it makes sense now. I like the idea of taking some of the steps from the dances and using it this way. I hope it is well rewarded.

BTW that clip is currently at 19,557 Views. It hit 10k just shy of 24 hours. So how many times is everyone watching it?

I knew Dave would go there! ;)

Can't wait to hear the rest of the interview. The 7K training clips TSL has posted have me really curious about the program, and Kori.

Interesting that Jason did a 2S as his first jump in that run-through. Are they looking to do a quad salchow rather than a 4T?

That is so cool...thanks for the info!

On a similar note, one that that struck me is how the choreography shows off some of Jason's deep edges. The more I rewatch the clip the more interested I am.

The fact Rohene was so insistent on having CAMEL pants because that was what they used during the time crack me up! I'm looking forward seeing the rest.

Which was what we all have been saying. The first was more of a costume, the second was a better outfit. In many ways they did what their goal was. The camel conveyed more of a costume and more time appropriate, the new was, just better for lines. Interesting that she said they were gray, I thought they were black.

And really how she handled it was not that bad. Rohene got his way when they could afford to be artistic, but when it really mattered, Kori went with what was most appealing. Not a bad compromise really. Rohene got to see his vision realized when Jason won his first US title, and Jason likely got a few more points late in the season for changing it. Everyone wins and Kori likely had less drama. Id be curious to know what Jason said during on all this.

So is Rohene going to insist on a Bono costume this year? :slink:

Yeah, that made me laugh too. I'm glad Kori put her foot down because I feel like the changes did a lot more for not only Jason's lines but the perception of the program as a whole. I hope TSL put the whole interview up soon! I know they are holding it until their site redesign is ready, but I'm getting impatient!

I just thought of something -- Charlie White was in Monument a few weeks ago and did an edge class: https://twitter.com/jasonbskates/status/598664931433549824. I wonder if Jason got to work with him on quickstep footwork? (Though did Jason know he was doing a charleston/quickstep program then?) That would have been really cool if that was the case. Even a general one-on-one footwork class would have been super beneficial.

Also while I was looking for a Charlie photo, I watched this funny video of Jason: https://instagram.com/p/238_aiB7lv/?taken-by=skate7k

And first day of summer session at college for Jason and Mariah: https://twitter.com/jasonbskates/status/604711532375719936

Listening to the clip...that kind of would have been a good time to actually get the USFS' feedback. Bring them in and say, which is better. My guess is that they would have chosen the dark grey pants.

I can't agree with Kori when she says "who cares if a few people didn't like the pants" because that's a major misread of the situation. The people who actually DID like the pants were a very tiny minority. At some point, I think Rohene was probably "too close" to the project to see that instead of looking "authentic", Jason looked like he'd just walked out of the costume section of a dollar shop.

I keep going back to that picture of the US men's podium, and Joshua, Adam and Max all costumed so elegantly, with very much a less-is-more theme, costumes that accentuated their lines and didn't detract from their skating. And then there's Jason...

I'm sorry if people feel I'm fixated on this issue, but it's part of a broader problem with Jason's packaging. The Juke costume was another example (and that's not touching the program itself).

I can't make out what all of them say. I can pick which one is the Olympic team banner, but what are the other three? National Champion, I assume, then perhaps World Team, Four Continents Team?
