Jason Brown

Just now watched Riverdance again.... so exuberant ... Skating never seems like work to him. I think he just LOVES it. Really looking forward to seeing him this weekend at Glacier Falls😊

And that's why I'm a fan of him. He bring so much spirit and passion onto the ice and makes people happy!

Yes...for me, this is where Rohene's explanation lost it. If you're going to put too many sparkles on the tunic, then you can have some leeway with the pants.

Sigh...I sincerely hope his costumes are better this year.

Nah. They'll be a crime against fashion again. I just don't think the team can help it.

His skating can certainly be first rate, I love what I've seen of the new programs. Hopefully, the quality of the skating will overshadow the outfit.

... Is there going to be a livestream for the Glacier Falls competition that anyone knows about?

crzesk8dad, whose child is competing at Glacier Falls, and Sylvia have been sharing information in the Glacier Falls thread here on GS, so it is another good resource.

Thanks to their efforts :), it is known that icenetwork will publish video after the competition. Not live streaming, but video on demand.

(IN did the same after last year's edition of Glacier Falls.)

Btwn crzesk8dad and Sylvia, I feel reasonably sure that we already would have heard if live streaming were going to be available (whether via IN or another outlet).

No livestream as was pointed out, but the IceNetwork coverage of GF in recent years has been very good - the whole Junior and Senior competition on IceNetwork, and the turnaround time was pretty quick last year IIRC - not the next day, certainly, but within that next week.

Well, he's apparently got a new costumer this year, so maybe not. As long as Rohene's input is minimised and kept out of it as much as possible.

You will see at least a version of his long program costume at Glacier Falls...more sparkle to be added, I'm sure...it's not quite as over the top as costumes in recent previous years have been so hopefully everyone will be happy--as of right now it's fairly simple and understated (but not quite as simple as just plain all black or monochrome...there's a lot of black, but some color too); definitely no chopping of leg lines. I'm not sure if his short program costume is ready yet--I haven't seen it.

Respect the power of color blocking! :)

Hmmm, simple and understated, I like. Thanks for the info!

However, Liebestraume also started out as simple and understated, and look what happened to that. So, I'm not holding my breath just yet! ;)

I'm really looking forward to Glacier Falls. To me, this feels like the off-season is finally almost over. Jason and Brendan competing this weekend, then Max the weekend after, then it will be time for Champs Camp, then it will be time for SLC Senior B, and suddenly we'll be talking Nebelhorn and Finlandia and before we know it, it will be time for Skate America.

I like the way you think, karne! We also have JGPs in a few weeks to bridge the gap between the summer and Senior Bs/Grand Prix.

I really do think this will be a great competition, though. Best of luck to Jason in executing his programs and maybe even landing that quad!

It will be amazing to see the new programs no matter what, but wouldn't it be fantastic if he executed a great quad in one of them? ;)

Yes! Come on Jason!

(chants & pumps fist) Quad, quad, quad, quad!

You know you can do it! :)

Anyway, regardless of potential quad - I hope he has a great time, and gets to perform his programs to satisfaction.:)

So - I trust Kori, I do. She knows Jason better than any of us could ever dream. I'm sure she knows what she's doing.

But - I do have to question the political wisdom of how they're presenting Jason so far this off-season.

TSL had a very good point when they said that even though Max didn't do his programs at the Broadmoor Open, he came out of that weekend looking much more convincing, ready, and in form than Jason did. Because while Max was prowling around like a caged tiger landing flawlessly perfect 4S-1Lo-3S combos, Jason was struggling with his 3A and putting out a program full of doubles. I mean, we know that doubles is what Jason does at the Broadmoor Open. So, that wasn't surprising. But having Jason come out and do that short program at Glacier Falls - I didn't like that. One jot. It'll have done nothing to soothe anyone's doubts about his 3A not being stable, it made his quad look even worse than usual, it made him look slow and unfit, especially with the fall on the 3F (usually his money jump) and it made them look disorganised (the spin issues). And I know I said this out there but really...speed. Whether the relative "slowness" is an illusion or not, it's not a good look.

I'm not panicking as such - it's still only August - but at the same time, I'm just so frustrated. This worked when he was a junior-turning-senior, when he was a relative unknown, even last year. But now he's the National Champion (and a lot of people still don't think he should be, the fools) and was fourth in the World. He's supposed to be the US' leading man. Chen, Dornbush - even Dolensky - are towelling him, and if Max comes out next weekend and hits, politically Jason could be in real trouble.

The rant is understandable, karne, but as I pointed out in the Glacier Falls thread, this isn't a huge departure from past seasons. Perhaps it's more drastic, but the pattern is similar. The goal is to peak and win in January in St Paul and in March in Boston, not in Anahaim in August.

People were saying the same comment about Ashley when she was a hot mess at Japan Open, was still relatively weak at Skate Canada.. Guess what she snatched her National title back by January. Everyone thought Polina would snatch No 1 based on winning Glacier Falls last year...and she didn't.

karne - as you said Kori knows Jason better then us, but if you will allow me to don my tin foil hat....again...

What if Jason needs to flop a little to have something to build off of? Maybe kori knows this. He often does do very well wen coming from behind. Some would argue he does better coming from behind than when he has an advantage. Twice this last season when he earned his lowest SP score of his senior career, he came back with a long good enough to set a personal best total score each time.

I agree it is a bit odd and most coaches would have said "not ready" but maybe kori knows Jason needs to feel out what he needs to work on in order to improve. Maybe she knows that he needs to have a bit of a fire under his engine from not doing so well to keep him focused. I think doing it now in its current shape is strategic.

Even reputation, I would not worry about. His PCS is still really high. I am not sure he got lower than a tie for second in any category here even with the problems and was second highest of the night. His FS PCS at Broadmoor was 89.slightly higher than at WTT. So right now he has no where to go but up. Now the expectations are not sky high. Excitement can build as he builds his program. I don't know if nailing your program this early is always wise. Polina is the rock star right now, but can she maintain this? Can she keep us captivated while other improve before our eyes? Can she keep our attention while others are taking us along for a journey? Who knows? She may be stale by US Nationals due to "peaking too soon" or may be national champ at this rate. But she has a tough road ahead I think. Jason is going to improve and make people happy to see him improve. As long as he does improve - he will be fine.

But @karne, how would you have him prepare for the season? I don't know the answer myself. Go to less publicized club comps until the quad settles?

Do you make the choreography less taxing so he can do everything else easily and focus on the 4T and if thats not perfect yet that's not so bad because everything else is pristine? Or do you take out the 4T and give him a lutz and keep the rest of the program and later integrate the quad, as they did at 4CC?

I it was tough for him to go out there last night - you could tell he wasn't as confident as usual.

I don't know either. That's why it's so frustrating, because I feel like it's not a good idea, but I can't think of anything better.

Sneak peek (low quality) of Jason's FS costume from the warmup, thanks to TSL.

The most important lesson I learned in the first six weeks of parenting is that you know your child best. Sure there are general guidelines and best practices regarding raising kids, but I found out that ultimately you have to allow your instinct to guide things along, even if it doesn't work at first. Also that many people will give advice and judge and you have to take it with a grain of salt.

I feel like this applies here. Kori had a good instinct on what to do with Jason. Many (in general) will come along and question things, but ultimately you have to sit back on your experience, knowledge and instinct.

Besides from a practical standpoint, I don't have much room or energy to worry about Jason in my sleep deprived nursing state. /endbabyhijack.

Even in your sleep-deprived state you're still the voice of reason!
