Jason Brown

Sometimes I feel like the "youngsters" don't understand the seriousness of their injuries and are too casual about them. Didn't we all feel at age 16 like we were indestructible?! I'm thinking in particular of Nathan...Jason looked great at TCC and I really hope he can stay injury free.

I am wondering if that is the case with Nathan; but I don't think it is always about age. I believe Max (fractured back?) and Joshua (torn abductor/broken fibula/sprained ankle/anything else?) were the same age as Nathan when they had those significant injuries. I think that Max was in a body cast for months and Joshua had surgery. Both were off the ice for at least several months. I have been under the impression that both guys came back to the ice with respect for what injuries can do in this sport.

Back to Jason - he has access to fantastic facilities with the OTC being in Colorado Springs (I'm not sure if he live there or in Monument; I don't think it's a long drive) with any physio that he may need. I think and hope that Jason will be pretty much injury free from now on - the most important thing is doing the off ice workouts and listening to what the body is telling you.

You could be right on the age thing. I guess sometimes I watch the quad madness and wonder if some of these guys will be in chronic pain or walking with canes sooner than we'd like to think. Don't mean to sound so negative, but it worries me!

Hopefully Kori is keeping a really close eye on Jason. It seemed so good to see him on the ice at TCC that I hate the thought of losing him again! :palmf:

I want skating! And I want to see Jason skating in particular. Broadmoor Open (senior) and the Aerial Challenge start Friday, I think, and I'm really hoping he is planning on participating. I'm curious too if he will attempt the jump challenge - it now requires a quad, I think (or 2?) so I'm not sure he's ready for it yet but it would be so cool to see the 3A-1loop-3F!

Such a bummer that Broadmoor won't be streamed (I think the jump contest will) but last year one fan posted videos and even did a recap for TSL - wonder if she will do it again this year?

And of course one week from today Grand Prix assignments will be announced!

Max's was probably a result of the gung-ho "I'm bulletproof!" teenage boy mentality, but the difference with Max's compared to Joshua's or Nathan's is that Max's actually had nothing to do with figure skating - he broke it lifting heavy weights while trying to bulk up for hockey.

Joshua's roll-call includes an overwork injury, someone else toepicking into his leg, and a broken leg during a program; not sure how many of his are attributable to the bulletproof mentality.

Nathan's, on the other hand, was absolutely the perfect storm: sixteen year old boy who had a bulletproof mentality and was going gung-ho on the quads and a coach who openly said he did not try to rein him in. No wonder Nathan's injured.

I am more concerned about the spin madness, watching fairly inflexible men attempting to contort their bodies into pretzel positions just to get points. I've never been more relieved than when Max stopped attempting a catch-foot camel.

Final Championship round of the men requires two different quads, one after the other.

I'm sure we'll get a video of Jason - how we get it is another matter - and I'm starting to get nervous that we haven't heard anything more about the IN live stream of the Aerial Challenge...

Good point on the inflexibility and spins. And the overtraining vs. accidental injuries makes sense too. Nathan was pretty exciting to see at Nationals, but it was pretty sad to see him get hurt at the Gala...Bottom line for me, I think I forget what a dangerous sport this is. Hope we have fewer injuries this year, but it may be too much to hope for!

.... Broadmoor Open (senior) and the Aerial Challenge start Friday, I think, and I'm really hoping he is planning on participating. ...

The Senior Men's "SP only" comp is scheduled for Thursday at the Broadmoor Open. 4:40-5:05 pm local time.
In years past, Jason has been known to skate both the "SP only" and CE ... although I have no idea whether he will do the same this year.

Last I knew, Thu Jun 30 is the announcement date for GP assignments (per USFS on May 5).
I hadn't heard about a change in the date??

You're right it's June 30 - in my eagerness for news (see revived US men's thread!) I just miscalculated. And you are right about Broadmoor, too.

yah I cant wait! yah I agree I thing kori does keep a close eye on Jason and his skating and training. and with any sport you have to be careful with your health and your body. I would really love too see him at the next Olympics . that would be aswome.

Exciting news - the Broadmoor Open will be live streamed!

Links to the event schedule and live stream are in the 2016 Broadmoor Open / Aerial Challenge thread (2016 Figure Skating Summer Competitions and Events).

Last year Jason competed in the SP only competition, combined competition (SP and FS), Aerial Challenge, and spins competition. In his interview with Mrs P after TCC, he said he would compete at Broadmoor but did not specify the events; his participation in the Aerial Challenge was TBD.

  • Thursday: Senior men's SP only comp at 4:40 pm. Jr/Sr spins at 5:55 pm. Jump comp at 8:05 pm

  • Friday: Senior men SP for combined event at 12:50 pm. Aerial Challenge at 7:45 pm.

  • Saturday: Senior men's FS for combined event at 2:00 pm

All times presumably mountain time.

great news icant wait too see Jason compete again I'm glad the Broadmoor open will be streamed live. cant wait go Jason.

SP Only comp is while karne is at work

And the combined event is very early karnetime.

But the jump event is over lunchtime! More skating!

Ive had a couple of glimpses of Team Koro so far. Hope to see more tomorrow.

Don't think we will see Jordan... he is happy to be able to do a 1A, good for him for sticking with it though. Looking forward to seeing new stuff from Mariah... she was used in an ad for 7k recently relating to the open, so i would think we will see her at least, and maybe her very good looking young man Romain as well.

Ill try to take any notes i can... unless someone more qualified already is.

Wait, are you there or just watching the live stream? As I was working most of yesterday I didn't watch live stream and would love to hear your thoughts on what you've seen so far. I know I'm curious as to the state of Jasons 3A and how he's looking in general as well as if he's going for any quads. I haven't seen any comments or photos by anyone yet, here or Twitter. So any thoughts on Jason, any of Team KoRo, and the rest of Team USA (especially Max, Nathan and Vincent) are welcome!

A couple of notes: it looks like we won't be able to see the spins event as it's not in the main rink. And it looks like the two men's short program events are only 25-30 minutes long and the jumps event tonight is only 20 minutes.

The Jason Brown Fan Page did post this condensed easy to read schedule showing the senior events:

https://twitter.com/jasonbrownfp/status/745791818902573056

They seem to be noting all times as approximate.

OT, but I was so happy to see Jordan attempting jumps again! Based on his Instagram clip I'm sure it will take him a while to work back up to competitive form as it looks like even landing the 1A is difficult for him.

Hooray, StitchMonkey is in the house! :yay:

I'm guessing they don't have many entries for the Senior Men, though it could still be that Jason is doing both. And I cherish a secret hope, but it may yet be too early...

Looking forward to seeing Jason skate again! :yahoo:

And would your secret hope have anything to do with that guy who plays guitar and skates?

It would actually be pretty funny to see him skating WHILE playing the guitar.

:laugh2: I might worry he would trip and break the guitar!

Well, and we shall see. I am looking forward to seeing what changes Jason might have made to Apassionata.

It would be seriously awesome to see him out there, so I hope your secret wish comes true - but yeah I'm with you on the dangers of guitars + skating!

I'm looking forward to seeing Appassionata again, too - the feed was so choppy for TCC that it was hard to get a feel for the program as a whole beyond "lyrical." Hopefully we get a proper 3A this time! I would love to see him attempt that beautiful 4T-3T we saw last fall, but that's probably a bit much to hope for considering he hasn't landed the solo jump in a comp yet...

To be clear I am not at the event.... i just am awake at the hours the thing is taking place... unlike some of us ;) I will try to keep track of the senior who are skating and what they are up to.

I watched most of the stream yesterday but did not catch any big names... or really any guys. Mostly I just liked getting the appetizer of at least seeing Kori and Rohene on the sidelines... good preview. Wishing the senior stuff was earlier as I am eager. Still fun to look out for surprises at the lower levels.

The lack of tweets is a bit frustrating. This event really needed a hashtag - it would be nice of a few pics of the start lists would get posted so we have some idea of who is skating. They are keeping it really really quiet this year. Even the jump event we have heard nothing much about who is competing. I know Courtney Hicks is back at 7K and is doing it along with Mirai and Mariah, and Max and Alex Krasnozhon, but I think that is it.

I have no idea what to expect at this point given all the silence.

Hmm - maybe it's been quiet so far because it's mostly just practice, though last night there were a couple of Jr Ladies flights. So perhaps things will pick up today. It is weird tho that there are no hashtags. Looks like Aerial Challenge may be providing some updates via snapchat.
