Jason Brown

Rosa74, so glad you got to go, and thanks for the eyewitness report! It is such a relief to see him landing those jumps! If he's not quite at Skate America level yet, he looks far, far better than he did at NHK. I agree with you - there is something so calm and yet mesmerizing about his presence. It's a quality I've not seen in any other skater I've watched live - he just draws you in and weaves a spell.

Katmari, thanks as always for finding and posting the good stuff! For those like me who mostly access via iPhone, here is the twitter version of what Katmari posted - you can stop and rewind the clip (which for some reason I can't do on Instagram):

With respect to the costume: I like it, but for some reason it looks to me like it belongs to the free skate even though he wore it tonight - kind of like a Victorian lady's shirt? I hope I'm wrong, because as nice as this is, I love the plain black shirt and pants he has been wearing - the symplicity really shows off his elegant lines. Whatever it's for, this is tons better than his last years bedazzled black velvet or the star-trek like appasionata costume!

In any case, so happy to see him looking so good after one week on the ice!

Sigh of relief, he looks good. That hydroblade into the Russian split?! :jaw:

Oooh, I actually quite like that top too. It looks like a soldier's jacket from some long-ago era?

Thank you SO much for the report, Rosa! Such a relief to hear he's looking good.

I have to say I love the new top. It's sexy! :D

Im glad to see your reports! Im so getting nervous. :drama: just hope he will achieve the best performances!

ETA: And now I seen the video--I like the shirt.
Me, too!

No, that's not how I saw it. Actually, my first thought was The Monkees!

Yes, I believe so. :)

Possibly. :)

I really did like the shirt and it seemed to fit well, but I seem to have different opinions from others here on many of his costumes. :) I have some photos of the group shots at the end that show the shirt, but they were taken through the plexiglass and aren't that clear. I was hoping 7K would post some of these. Btw Rohene and the new coach are also in the shots.

Okay so I'm glad to hear the shirt looks nice and more like a soldiers uniform than a Victorian lady's blouse - really I am!

By new coach, do you mean Doug Ladret (new pairs coach) or someone else?

Also: do you know if his first jump was a 3A (forward takeoff) and / or did his landing seem okay - hand down or off balance or anything? We didn't get to see that jump in the 7K clip, and I wasn't sure if it's because he did a not very good 3A or if he did an easier jump instead, such as a 3T, and they just didn't want to put it up publicly.

Sorry, I can't help with that. Although I can identify a 3A, I was watching through my fingers while at the same time trying to see around the head in front of me, while at the same time trying not to see, chanting silently, don't fall... don't fall... and did not see the opening jump. Others around me were looking at the floor with their eyes closed. I don't think there was a hand down. I was just amazed he was doing more than a light exhibition program and was so happy that he appeared healthy. Sorry, I had planned to record this and even missed some of Tamoki's program because I was testing out the video, but when Jason started to skate, I went, nah, I just want to watch.

Thanks, and no, we didn't get to meet anyone. We stayed around for the group photos and then the skaters were on the ice filling in the holes for a long time and hubby wanted to go. Maybe another time. :)

ETA: Wanted to add that I believe everything Jason did in warm-up was also done cleanly.

Thanks for such a vivid retelling! How funny that everyone was apparently convinced he'd fall - although in retrospect, I guess, he has fallen a lot on the 4T, and with the injury, of course no one knew what was coming. Thanks again!

Yep! Doug. .....

In case anyone cares:

Doug Ladret has significant experience as a singles coach.

He also is a very experienced coach of pairs, and I did see that little video of him coaching a young pair at 7k ... but I have no idea whether his new role at 7k is confined to coaching pairs??

IMO, seems within the realm of possibility that Doug now or in future could have a supporting role on Team Jason.
What I am imagining is that some 7k coaches other than Kori and Rohene do work with Jason to a limited extent (not sufficient to be officially named on Jason's bio) and that Doug possibly is or will be in the "supporting" group for Jason.

Not saying that it would be a giant whoop. Just mentioning for some in this thread who seem to be intensely interested in every crumb, large or small, with potential relevance to Jason.

(Although the only coaches named on Max's bio are Tom Z and Becky, I know that Max does get some training from other "supporting" World Arena coaches.
[As an unrelated aside, not that it matters re 7k, so happens that Max once was one of Doug's singles skaters in Arizona.])

Many thanks to Rosa for all your observations/thoughts as an eyewitness.
Very much enjoyed hearing about Tomoki and Jordan, as well as Jason. Good luck to all three at Nats :yay:.

Kori and Rohene will be busy at Nats.
Jason is in Practice Group D; Tomoki in B; Jordan in C. I guess it is a good thing that they are in separate groups, so that the coaches can focus on each man individually??
Plus Rohene will be working with the Novi ice dancers.

Yeah, I think they were feeling what I was feeling - concern about the injury - and that any wonkiness with the jumps could be an indication that it was bothering him.

Honestly when he said his leg was at 80 percent I knew he would be okay. Yeah it would be nice to be at full strength, but 80 percent will be okay for most of his jumps, if not all (quad). And it's also amazing the difference a week will make with athletes.

As I said before it's not like he was going from zero like with his back injury. Even bombing at NHK he was still doing about 50 percent of his content. So an 80 percent leg will probably be able to do more. Also he is well trained so I'm sure muscle memory is helping him as well.

I hope you're right! Certainly the 7K clip was encouraging. The 3F-3T looks much better than the one at NHK already.

The keys for me are (1) whether he still has enough stamina to get through both programs; and (2) whether he can rotate and land most of his jumps - including his 3As- clean. Fingers crossed!

Since this is our safe haven for Jason ubers....

I think there are others here who mentioned that, like me, Jason brought them "back" to figure skating. And of course, the legendary Toller Cranston first brought me to skating (Or at least men's skating).:luv17: Ryan Stevens in his SkateGuard blog found this 1979 interview with Toller, who was evidently considering an amateur "comeback" for 1984.

http://skateguard1.blogspot.ca/2017/01/toller-cranstons-1984-comeback.html

The interview has this wonderful quote:

"In the performance that I would give, the emphasis would be totally on performing. I would perform like wild. It's not that I wouldn't do a number of things, but I would say, let the skaters doing the quadruples and the eight triples do them. I would do all the things that they don't do."

Does this remind us of anyone? again.

Go, Jason!:hap10:

Oh, thank you for this! I was one of those brought back to skating by Jason but it's been difficult. Trying to understand the new age of figure skating is hard. Honestly, I don't even want to understand a scoring system that rewards jump attempts that end up as falls. The program needs to be pretty, or at least pleasant. I'm much more a fan of what goes on between the jumps than the jumps themselves and I sorely miss the footwork that we used to see. If jumps are necessary, then make them pretty, take-offs and landings. But that's all I'll say about that. :) To me, Jason has it all. When I first saw him skate, it was like Dick Button was in my head saying, "this kid has it all - artistry! athleticism! choreography! - look at him go!" I'm not hugely optimistic about being able to remain serious about skating in the face of all these changes, but I'll give it a try. It would be nice if there was room for all styles. Let's just say, if there isn't room in modern figure skating for a skater of Jason's talents, then no, I don't want to stick around. But I hope there is.

Bless Toller, Go, Jason!

Hang on - the Challenger Series is over, right? Did Jason just win it for the 2nd year running?
