Jason Brown

Okay you guys just very briefly cause I gotta drive: I think the program is gonna be good but it didn't blow me away today. He's in great shape physically, 3A was good, but he didn't do any quads. I prefer this year's SP, but El henry will like it! :thank:

It's very much in the mold of Gatsby as to movement. I kinda kept thinking so g and dance man. I am pretty sure it starts with the step sequence - which looks really hard - there are some jazz dance moves in there that I can't believe he's doing. There are also some "sassy" hand gestures that don't work for me yet, but it's only the first outing. I think he will use the st sq to reveal the personality of the character he's playing - and I'm hoping it will be a bit ...I don't want to say evil, but a bit darker than, say, Juke was. We'll see. It was kind of hard to get anything today, not only because it's new but because he was dressed for Piano. Ending spin and pose - click boom - is great. He scored 85+.

As to music, I think there's no need to worry. It's mostly all chorus of "room where it happens" and it's hard to catch words. It's not gonna come off as political.

I think when he has it under his belt it will be really good, but I have a suspicion the FS will be more my style. I think he's gonna do it tomorrow, so looking forward to it!

Okay that's all - if you've go questions, ask!

:hap57: :thank:

Okay guys, quick note before I get on the road: free skate is beautiful! It's very much like Piano but with heavier orchestration - more emotional. No sound effects! We will get that gorgeous, showstopping spiral again - yay! All double jumps today. Will take polishing. If you were ready to move on from Piano (I'm looking at you Rosa!) you may wish for something else, but the music is much less minimal - it has a build - so maybe that will help. I loved it! Okay, more later!

Thanks for the report! It sounds likely a lovely concept. I'm glad to see two contrasting programs. I think that's good for an Olympic season.

No tinkly piano music: yay! Although I will miss the clashing sword sounds;)

And Jason (and Rohene) know what what the audience wants, and the audience wants a lovely Jason man-spiral....

I wonder if Maxime Rodriguez named his work? How about "La Chanson de Jason" (yes, a very bad learned allusion, as long as we're in the Middle Ages )

Yes, I agree - I think the short will be great once it's farther along, and anyone who loved last year's FS will love this one too! I'm curious to see how they develop both. Right now the SP is crying out for a real character; the FS needs to be differentiated from Piano - he says it's the next step in his growth - what does that mean? Understandably he has to get the tech and choreo down first. I think Piano didn't come together until this year; Writing really became his at Worlds. Looking forward to this journey!

ETA el henry sorry to say there are a few bars of tinkly Piano music at the beginning. But they're brief! 😉

I'm hopeful I'm going to like the FS, even though... I was not a fan of the Piano. (To put it mildly. Very mildly.) But I loved T&I, and Philippe's d'Artagnan, and since Tavi is saying that the music builds and actually goes somewhere, I'm very excited about it, and can't wait to see it.

What a treat to have a live report from when the programs are first developing! Very exciting. Both a work in progress - to be sure. Thx for your efforts and can't wait to hear more details when you have time. I am very intrigued by the FS!

Any sense of layout based on the double jumps done?

Umm, no. :sad21: Sorry! :slink:

I'm not sure how back loaded it was, even. I think the sequence was close to the end but I didn't honestly even notice if it began with 3Z or 3A. I know there was at least one combo in second half, but can't recall if it was a 3A or 3F combo. I'm hopeless! :drama:

The truth is I was paying more attention to the music and trying to get a feeling for the program as a whole. This is another program with constant movement and the jumps are just woven in seamlessly. I only noticed the transitions because they're so easy to identify.

Besides, Jason's parents and brother were sitting near me and I didn't want to be a nerdy fan taking notes.

I will say that there was nothing in the program that struck me as a long empty set up for a quad. :)
But I guess that means he's gonna have to have perfect technique to land them.

Thank you so much for all the info, Tavi! I'm looking forward to seeing both programs even more after reading your descriptions. I think I'm going to love both the exuberant, outgoing Jason of the SP and the lyrical, dramatic Jason of the FS.

:2thumbs: :ghug:

I appreciated The Piano because of the sheer beauty of Jason's skating, but I also enjoy his more dramatic programs. I absolutely adored Tristan & Iseult and am thrilled his FS is by the same composer even if it doesn't include a sword fight. ;)

No sword fight, and nothing vaguely resembling it - I think this will stretch him differently, though!

Neat. There is quite a bit of choreography. I don't really get a Gatsby-esqe vibe-- it's definitely more Broadway than quick step. I think Jason's still trying to master the choreo; you can see one point where he forgot a step or two of his StSq.

I like this early version. Thank you for posting it. I sense it will become a show stopper similar to the number in the show. I was one of the lucky ones who saw Hamilton with the original cast before it become such a thing.

Gosh, too bad they're so hard to see.

Overall: he didn't look this slow.

I think she does have them in the right order, but you can't see the very beginning - you can see that on Jason's SP video at about 3:25 - Rohene says let's do it from the top and he goes into the starting pose.

I see I was wrong about st sq being in the beginning - looking at this, it's not. You can't really see it here - but this is where he gestures / uses his hands. Also, there are some nice edges in there, but is that a butt spin?

The footwork is amazing.

It looks like he's doing 3A, 3S, 3F-3T.

This will be good!

ETA for me echoes of Gatsby in part 2 and beginning of part 3.

Also, there are some nice edges in there, but is that a butt spin?

That is a butt spin. :shame:

On the plus side, he's mastered the high kick without a lunge. :yes2:

I'm so grateful he shared the choreography beginnings on his video so we can really appreciate how far he has progressed.

Haha. I didn't dislike The Piano at all, but I was hoping for a different style after 2 years of it. In the Ted Flett interview, Jason said Kori & Rohene wouldn't let him repeat styles when, for example, he wanted to do Tango again, but here we are with a third year of this lyrical style. It just doesn't jibe with what he said. I promise to try to keep an open mind. :)

I really, really liked Sonja - she reminds me of Mariah. She has a lovely flowing quality to her skating - really nice SS and expressive use of upper body. Musical. Her jumps looked good although I don't remember what they were - she did a 3z combo but I don't recall if the second jump was 2T or 3T. I spoke with her briefly and she seems quite level headed and maybe a bit older than many juniors? Anyway, I liked her a lot and hope she makes it to Nats this year. I'm almost positive Rohene did the choreo, which I liked a lot.

I believe I saw Sonja skate at the Nats send-off in January. I remember liking her style a lot and was hoping to hear more from her.

Thanks for the reports on all the skaters!

Jason is on the preliminary entry list for Glacier Falls (July 27-30) per Sylvia's site:

:hap57:

Looking forward to seeing how both programs are developing! In view of the negative comments about the SP music cuts on FSU, I'm especially curious about that program.

I honestly didn't notice any issues with the music in the rink - and as a musician I like to think I would have - but you never know. It sounds like whenever the kids make noise, it picks that up and the music fades out, so that may be part of the problem. I guess we'll see.

Somewhat more randomly: his 3S in the fan cam is really pretty, so I'm really hoping that bodes well for the 4S.

@Karne, I don't recall Josh doing Glacier Falls in the last few years, and his first GP isn't until November. He may well just be taking things slow and following his normal pattern of doing under the radar competitions.
