Jason Brown

Mrs P - What you say makes sense. But since he and Kori have said his consistency comes with lots of repetition, I do worry that another change in layout could be self-defeating. Because there doesn’t seem to be much time between the end of the GPF and the start of the men’s SP at Nats.

Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed for the SP - and yeah, everybody is putting him low in their predictions - Jackie Wong has him fifth - so here’s hoping he proves them wrong!

ETA Katmari - thanks for the article! I love the story about the FS - can’t wait to see it now! And maybe the new boots explain in part why he isn’t attempting quads.

I think we'll see the layout he's doing at GPF but with the 2A replaced with the 4T. I think he'll stick to a no-quad layout in the SP. I think this whole season has been a matter of experimenting with what is the best layout for the choreography. I don't think it's a huge stretch to make that switch at nationals.

The article was interesting. I'm hoping the costume won't be too crazy. Since it sounds like Jason's taking ownership of the program and the costumes, I think we'll see something simple again.

Hope you’re right about the quad - what you say makes sense. And yeah, it does sound like he’s taking ownership of the FS. I think he’s done that from the beginning with the SP, but perhaps because the FS was a real collaborative effort, he was less assertive.

I remember Kori discussing the development of the character in Riverdance - how she came up with the idea of the warrior saving his village or whatever - so I’m intrigued that he’s the one creating the story now. And I’m actually curious if some of the changes in the jump layout have to do with that story - if they fit better with it - instead of being driven by stamina concerns, for example. I always loved the way the 3z-1l-3s matched the music, so I’m sad to see it moved, but interested to see how the change works.

Re the costume, it will be very interesting to see how he views himself now in this context - that is, as a performer rather than as Jason in real life. I agree it will be more simple than the current one, but I do wonder how it will differ from last year’s costumes. Or maybe it won’t. Anyway, looking forward to seeing it!

Great article, Jason is so thoughtful in his responses.

But wanting to be “himself” in his costume selection? I am a teensy weensy bit scared, because as much as I wanted Rohene to take it easy with the Bling-orizer, I also don’t want Jason to look like one of those guys that stopped off at Target to pick up some clothes before stepping on the ice :drama: and yes, I do have one gifted skater in mind;)

And the blue was a gorgeous blue......

OK, any idea what is happening in this video? I think I understand "arigato"

ETA: I'm sorry, I have to add this, Bing Translate translates the Japanese on Jason's post as "Today is the first day of the competition! I'm thrilled! Thank you, Mr. You guys have cancer." I mean, I knew there were a lot of injuries this year, but.....:laugh2:

Taka!!! His coach Nobu Sato (Yuka Sato's father and also Mao Asada's coach in the later half of her career) gave him (Takahiko Kozuka) that pat before he stepped on the ice.

https://youtu.be/Qpu_kzc2fus watch the beginning!

I shared this video cause it's from when Skate America 2012, which he won. (And I saw him live!) I miss his skating a lot!!!

Thank you for sharing the wonderful video. But I hope Jason does not cut his hair any time soon, at least not before the Olympics! Tanque Verde Ranch is a fantastic site in the Sonoran Desert.

Tanque Verde Ranch sounded familiar, so I looked it up on google maps. It should have - I was less than a km away from it last week at the Douglas Springs trailhead.

The replays were super cool for Jason in that video. They suspended the video perfectly to the Russian spilt so you could see the major air time he's getting.

I was happy to see him do a nice 3A. Although the judges were really all over the place on GOE -- they either gave it a 0 or a 2 .

I think Jason did that interview during NHK because it was scheduled to air this weekend (and the schedule announcement was before Jason got the notice he was going to GPF)... so maybe Taka patted Jason's NHK voodoo away before he left Japan.

That was a really nice skate by Jason! There were a few little errors, but overall it was a huge turnaround from NHK. It was especially great to see him do well given that he was a relatively last minute addition.

What I loved the most was that he seemed to be skating so joyously! That was especially clear in the BESP version posted above (thank you, Doris!). It was so nice to get closeups of what he does in the beginning, from a different angle than we usually see this program - his face is so expressive.

After reading the Ice Network article, I’m really looking forward to the FS tomorrow- it will be interesting to see how the program changes with the more personal interpretation. And I wonder if there has been time for a new costume yet?!

^ They join the long-line of Russian lady skaters that love Jason.

Fabulous skate from Jason! NHK bobbles were a one-off clearly.

One thing the British Eurosport commentators pointed out that I agreed with was that he has a tendency to be really borderline on his spin positions. You have to hold them for two to be counted and he really skims the line. I'm 90% sure the last spin was a three for that reason. And this seems an odd mistake for him to be making? He's a fabulous spinner, it surely shouldn't be that hard or too much extra time for him to hold everything for at least three rotations in a spin. Weird oversight from him and Kori there.

Looking forward to the FS! (A little worried about the costume change...)

Prayer Circle that the costume change will not be, as Nick Verreos would say, a “Ross Dress for Less” special:ghug:

It was so good to see the BEsp commentary where they actually talked about Jason’s performance and crowd reaction and yes, the spin issue, rather than nattering on forever about the combo bobble.....

So what to make of Jason's performance today? There were a lot of technical issues, but he's got the choreography down. Watching it on a second viewing, he did seem to skate with a lot more conviction then he did at NHK and all season.

The mistakes here didn't seem to be of nerves like it was in NHK. I wonder how much the breaking in of boots factored in. It seemed neither Jason nor Kori had super high expectations given their reaction in the K&C to his score.

But they REALLY need to decide on a layout. He's done like a different layout for each competition! Even in this competition, they moved up the second 3A for some reason. I feel like half the issues are because he can't remember where to do the jumps. I get the logic of maximizing points, but it doesn't do much good if he's making errors. I'd say just stick to the layout he did at Skate Canada and do it on repeat until Nationals!

But I'll take the max GOE on the camel spin and the spiral, which was especially nice today.

ETA: I just updated the U.S. men's spreadsheet and it's pretty revealing. His average TES in the FS is 78.57. He does have a good PCS buffer relative to most of the men (it's much smaller but there's a minor gap between him and Adam/Nathan), but that's not going to do any good if he doesn't up the TES. On the other hand, his TES here was an improvement from NHK. But golly, it's going to be a nail bitter until nationals!

Jason Brown's 3A in his SP at the GPF was fantastic! I cannot believe I am writing that, I mean the part about AT THE GRAND PRIX FINAL!!! Since he was skating first, I was worried. When has that ever happened before? It turned out great because then I could relax for the rest of the skaters. All I have seen is one of those Russian videos that looks like it was filmed underwater, yet it was still wonderful! What a great start to a terrific GPF.

I'm not even going to look at the GPF section until after the Gala because I am floating with happiness.
