Seriously, I’m glad he’s taking the time to reflect rather than just pushing everything aside and plowing through to 4CCs. We all have our theories about what went wrong this season and why he imploded at Nats - but he’s the only one who really knows. He’s got to figure out where he wants to go and what he has to do differently to get there.

Dancing through national landmarks seem like a big no-no, but that's just me. :laugh:

The mustache is weird to me because I still see him as a teenager, lol. Stop growing up, LOL. I agree the change of scenery is a good thing.

Agreed!

And agreed the “teenager versus grown man” thing is part of it, but for me it’s also about aesthetics - at least in that photo (admittedly not the greatest) it just doesn’t seem that flattering.

That said, aside from the fact that he’s on down time and it’s probably a lot easier not to shave (or go through his full hair routine), he’s probably just experimenting with different ways of presenting himself to the world - the contrast to the “edgy” look that appeared at Champs Camp is huge! :drama:
 
I like the experimentation - even if it's not to my taste. I'm also the one heretical fan that is completely all-in in ending the ponytail. I think yes it was kind of his trademark for a while, but he's reached the point where it's probably seen too much of a gimmick (not to mention the amount of maintenance required to keep it).

Agree about experimentation, but I love the man bun on him - I think it’s super flattering. That said I’m sure that with his hair it’s a ton of work.

I have to say, I find it really hard to imagine what he’d look like with short hair (or what kind of short style would suit him) - I’m sure there are plenty; it’s just a lack of imagination on my part.

I wore my own hair super long (with bangs, shudder) for years until I finally screwed up my courage and had it cut. Much to my surprise, a short angled bob suits me much better and I’ve never gone back, but I must admit that first cut was traumatic! Speaking of which, time to schedule a haircut (with a new hairdresser ugh). :drama:
 
I thought the man bun worked too, but I sort of excited to see what he comes up with. I think people were kinda shocked when Adam Rippon decided to do away with his famous curls, but honestly I think he looks better with his current no-curl style. (Jury's out on whether Nathan's new no-curl hairdo works for me. ;)

I am the opposite -- I always kept my hair short -- usually a bob -- as a teenager/college student, but now I have it longer, just below shoulder length. I like doing up-do styles -- like doing a side braid and pinning it up. My hair is naturally wavy -- my daughter acquired that from me, she has the cutest waves!

The boy in the photo, Matthew Grossman, was at Nationals at the juvenile level (which he qualified for by winning Eastern sectionals). He was 6th there. How fun it must've been for him to train with Jason! (And he said as much in the comments. :biggrin:)
 
There’s something I really like about Audrey Weisiger, and I’m so glad Jason’s had this time to work with her.

Alison Manley did a two part interview with her that Ive just started listening to.

I didn’t realize she was coach to both Michael Weiss and Tim Goebel. They haven’t discussed either one in detail yet, but she did mention in passing that she worked with Michael Weiss on both triples and quads.

I'm surprised that she hasn't had any high-profile elite skaters since those two. But it seems she's more involved behind-the-scenes with the Young Artist Showcase, Grassroots to Champions, etc.

Also I had no idea about Tim Goebel. I wasn't really following skating that actively at that time, but I remember the whole Frank Carroll firing thing -- didn't realize he ended up being coached by Audrey.

She apparently didn’t work with Tim that long. Frank called and asked her to teach him. She doesn’t have more high profile skaters by choice: as she described it, the lifestyle was really demanding and she couldn’t really control her schedule. She still teaches kids in a limited way and has skaters come in to consult, but she isn’t committed full time to skaters the way, say, Kori is to Jason.

Many of the things she said made realize that she has probably been very helpful for Jason this week. She talked a lot about learning from disappointment, and how an experience that is not what you expected or wanted still teaches you something important.

So not surprising to see a reflective Jason! Selfishly I hope that after reflection he still wants to keep skating. But really, it’s whatever is best for him.

(A different timeframe from the camp and fundraiser in Fort Collins.)

Very much in the realm of speculation, but I wonder (in hindsight) whether there's any chance that she visited Monument on the same trip as Colorado Springs?? Not unthinkable to me.​

Could be - she mentioned being in CS several times during the interview, mentioned Kori, Tom Z, etc. This interview is several years old (2013?) so obviously that particular info is out of date, but she sounds very connected and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if she had gone to Monument. She described what she does as consulting with coaches and their skaters to help solve problems - sometimes as part of the G2C seminars team and sometimes individually at the skaters’ home rink.

Her interview is very long but great - highly recommend if you haven’t heard it.
 
Well, I like long hair and facial hair on men, cause that's how we rolled in the mid-70s, and I still like it. ;)And I liked Adam's curls better too (probably because it was longer).

But I don't care if Jason has a mohawk, as long as (selfishly) he keeps skating. :biggrin:

Now, back to my strict supervision mode, Jason, are you at National or Dulles yet waiting on a plane to Taipei?

7K did have a coach who regularly used Dartfish...but he left quite a while ago. There aren't currently any 7K coaches who are using/doing extensive Dartfish analyses on a regular basis (Kori uses an slo-mo app...it might be the Dartfish mobile app...I'm not sure). Dartfish is just a technology/tool and doesn't require a huge set up anymore like it used to unless you want particular types of data.

As far as I understand it, Jason is just in Virginia to train with Audrey while Kori is away for Europeans...it's good for skaters to switch things up, train different places, and experience different things (some of the same reasons he spent time working with Frank). Plus Jason loves to travel so I'm sure it's good for him on that level too!
 
I appreciated the government shutdown reference. Probably the most political thing Jason will say. :laugh: I'm looking forward to seeing his programs and hope he will do them as well as we all know he can do them!
