Jason Brown

More fluff!

This is older, to promote the Minneapolis show. What I am finding interesting:

Jason on skates showing the practice ice appears to be the offer that SOI makes to get their promotion on the show. The host after two minutes talking to Jason (who she clearly has never met before) says that his SOI bio says "is known for his infectious personality" and "That is probably the understatement of 2022".

Which is why he's doing the fluff.

Jason has the gift of being able to say the same thing over and over and over and making it seem fresh and new every time. It's remarkable. He's so invested in every second of an interview and trying to communicate personally with the interviewer. He succeeds every time.

The usual answers to the usual questions, but in an interview from Chicago to promote the Spokane show, Jason says "ask him in a couple of months" about retiring.

He is going to drag this out.....:drama::drama::drama:

That is actually a little different from what he's said before. At one point he said he'd start thinking about what's next after SOI ended in June. Now he's extending that through the Japanese show tours. In the past 4 years, Jason was back in training by July. So this year is very different. I think he's trying out the life of a retired skater this summer to see if he likes it.

When the GP assignments come out at the end of June, I expect Team USA will have a lot of TBDs on the list. I don't think most of them want to think about what's next at this point. I'm sure that Jason has discussed this extensively with Tracy and Brian, but I'm sure they advised him to take his time to think about it. And he's taking that time. And that's good. This is the first interview this year where he's said directly that he wants to complete his college degree. He could transfer to Chicago or Northwestern to complete his last 2 years. That might be a good thing. I don't see him going back to Colorado to live whether he's competing or not. After 4 years in Canada he might want to be nearer to his family. And have a big city social life. He could still train with Ro and do tours.

Whatever he decides, I'm sure he'll make a good decision and he won't regret it. We just have to wait until he's ready to tell us.

I still haven't accepted the possibility that Jason might retire....

However, when that day comes, maybe he will emulate John Curry and found a touring skating company, for which he choregraphs?

And here's a question for other Jason fans - in your opinion, who do you think is the male singles skater who will carry on pushing forward the artistic side of the sport the most? (In my opinion, it's Deniss Vasiljevs).

That's a good question. At the moment there is no one at Jason's level of artistry and scoring capability. Deniss is definitely trying hard to fill that role. But he's not the dancer that Jason is. There were a lot of years between John Curry (my favorite until I saw Jason) and Jason. They are both one in a generation skaters.

Honestly, I agree with Deniss, but I also think Shoma has more artistic capacity than he's shown us yet. I've said it before - I would LOVE to see what Rohene could set on Shoma.

I don't know who will step into the Jason role  Deniss is good, Shoma is good, but they are not Jason. You could see what Jason could be when he first hit Juniors.

Yes, a once in a generation skater. (Don't retire..
Not yet)
True - I actually think baby Shoma had a lot of those same qualities. I'm 100 percent on the Jason is Special bandwagon, but I also think that there probably ARE more skaters who can come up toward him - or who WILL come that direction if the sport continues to equalize jumps and skating. I say that because, as a dancer I see MANY men with spectacular tricks and impeccable technique who are also artists. The odds that there is only 1 man in the world who could do that kind of skating are slim - I think it is just about HOW skaters are currently trained and what/ how they are taught. Perhaps more focus on artistic qualities (thank you Jason) will entice more of those artistically gifted athletic guys to choose skating.

Also - I'm really not ready for Jason to retire.

There are other skaters who are capable of skating artistically but so far none of them have reached Jason's level. To do so they will have to focus on it, and most of them are focusing on the big jumps. If skating judges reward the artistic, more skaters will follow. That's Jason's mission. The focus in dance is art. The focus in skating is scoring. How scores are earned influences what skaters work on. Jason just kept on pushing and the sport started to come along with him. If others work as hard as he does on that aspect of skating, their scores will follow and they will emerge as artistic skaters.
