I have that IFS magazine (cheap to subscribe to the digital version). Jason was non committal about whether he would compete again, and said he was talking to Tracy about it. Here is the key quote: "Right now I am taking a break from "I need to be ready for this date"....."Instead I am going to focus on performing, stay in shape, continue to treat my body as well as I can and maintain my stamina, so if I do decide to do anything I will be ready to step into that....But I am kind of taking that mental break to concentrate on performing while leaving that door open....The last two years were so tough...not being out in from of crowds...not being able to compete or travel with my family.....It is hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that even though those two performances at the Olympic Games were so special and will always remain as two of the best programs that I am so proud of, to not have my family in the stands at the last event is a tough thing for me to think about".I agree with the assessment (or maybe because it means we would at least see him at Nats, I am hoping that is the case.

So in summary, the fact that he is staying in performance shape gave me hope! Maybe he will jump into more competitions. I don't understand the rules enough to know how long an elite, top ranked skater can avoid major events and still step back in. Is there a tipping point of no return?

I am not sure of the rules either (I know a "returning skater" can be eligible for the GP, I don't know how long it lasts, but I *think* it's two years) but I am pretty sure that Jason has a bye to Nats based on his last year.
So fingers crossed.

Because he medalled at Nationals last year he will have a bye to Nationals this season regardless of whether he does the GP or not. And Jason is high ranked enough and talented enough that he could definitely sweep into Nationals and claim a 4CC/Worlds spot, especially now in the absence of Vincent and Nathan. His minimums will be good as they are valid for two years from the last time they were met - which means his timer starts from the Olympics.
I'm less good at remembering what the return GP rules are but I don't think he'd be eligible for it if he does 4CC/Worlds this season as he would be extremely likely to earn GP spots on his own with his Worlds finish/rankings/SB. He'd only be eligible for return GP spots if he sat the entire season out.

David Wilson redeemed himself with Schindler's List, but it pains me to think what a waste of Jason's time "Slaughter" and "Old Friends/Hazy" were. Jason did as best he could do with those programs, but imagine if instead he had had long programs that were as magnificent as his two Rohene short programs those two seasons. All that time he put into those David Wilson programs....an opportunity lost. Hi Susan!!!

I wonder if they took time to talk through their post Olympic plans. They are the same age, both adore skating so much. I mean, sure Yuzi is an icon, but he is a person like everyone else, probably feels just as insecure about "what next?" as Jason does right now.

No, it doesn't. But if he does, he's on Team A with the rest of the Olympians. It denotes pay scale and choice of competitions etc. None of these skaters have officially announced that they are not competing. Ilia, Camden, Chock and Bates Green and Parsons have pretty much all said that they will continue. They are in training. The assumption is that Hawayek and Baker are continuing. The rest have not made any decision public.

Hi A - agreed. David did a poor job with those programs and I also blame Tracy for not doing anything about it. She had seen many of Jason’s previous performances and had to know that he wasn’t happy with what they were doing. He was too polite and didn’t complain. You could see the look on his face at those competitions and know Jason wasn’t happy. That had to show in practice. He wanted to please his coaches. He never wanted to do S&G and agreed to try it. Big mistake. He didn’t like the music and they should have listened to him. It did waste 2 valuable years of his career. Look at the beautiful exhibition programs Rohene made for him after that.
