Jason Brown

USFS has uploaded Jason's program separately. I believe the 30 second weird music overlay is probably for copyright reasons. Still beautiful, of course:

The weird music is In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg. Fortunately, he did not hear that. There are a lot of jumps to be done in that program. Not sure where they are going, but I'm excited to see where this goes.

His 3T was perfectly rotated, which reassured me: his shoes must be completely fit now and I'm sure he'll skate fine from the start of the season.

We know he'll be doing 2 3As, a 3F, and 4 more jumps. I'm curious to see where they go in the program. He definitely has solved his boot problem!
His jumps looked very secure, so let's hope that the boot problems are resolved. Even in its shortened form, his program is exquisite! You can tell that careful thought and planning went into every detail of the choreography.

Loving the Uncle J and Nico clips!

but I would make one tiny correction to the quoted clip. We don't know if Nico's last name is Brown. I don't know if Jordan kept her name, and I don't remember her husband's last name, but it's not Brown. I knew two (married) women when I was younger whose child took the mother's last name. I thought it was cool, but it was very rare.

Geek out on minor issues over....

My guess is that Nico's last name is not Brown. But he's definitely on Team Brown!

Minor point, but one that pleases me.

Jason has changed the music for his chair-ography exhibition. At both Sun Valley and Friends on Ice, he is skating to Rock Around the Clock. The original by Bill Haley and his Comets. As opposed to a techno cover of Hit the Road Jack.

Where is the "nodding yes" when you need it? :)

This blogger did several interviews at the Summer Sizzler, but of course in this space we care about the one with Jason. :) (ETA: It appears she did not do the interviews solo, but has put more of the actual interviews given to the media down than I have seem previously, at least for Jason)

Some info we already know, but more information (for me) about topics such as leaving Kori for TCC. And he is in such a good headspace now. Loved this quote:

"... I remember leaving those [2018] U.S. Championships and telling myself that I will never allow a jump to define me ever again. I will never allow a person or a thing, it was just such a moment of realization that, like nothing and no one will define [me] whether it’s success, failure, what I could or couldn’t achieve, it put me in the driver’s seat again."

👏

I was interested to note that Tracy was a catalyst in his decision to continue after Beijing. She respected his talent and his drive and I think she knew that he really wasn't done, but needed to prove that to himself. And he did! He's still in the driver's seat and doing things his way. Brian and Tracy let him grow up, become the person he was meant to be. He really is remarkable! That was a very good interview. Thanks for the link!

I have noticed that Jason is taking advantage of show opportunities this year. That strategy was very successful when this sequel to his career started, and now that he's back in shape for competitions, the combination of training and shows should be successful for him. I've often said that as painful and as devastating that 2018 failure was, it was probably the best thing that could happen to him. It allowed him to wipe the slate clean and get a whole new start. The stars aligned, he moved to Toronto, he made the '22 Olympics and skated well and the door didn't close. None of this would have happened if he'd made the 2018 Olympics. He had to make that leap to give himself what he called a sequel, but I call, a second career in skating. It's a Phoenix story. He rose from the ashes and learned to fly all over again and soared to new heights! And seeing Jason succeed, seems to be inspiring others as well.

Very interesting article. I was struck by how thoughtful and self-aware all of his responses were. Yes, he is rightly seen as upbeat and super nice to everyone, but he wouldn't have gotten this far or had near the longevity in the sport if he didn't also have a very competitive side.

I'm glad that he has moved pass his worries about the quad and realizes how valuable he truly is as an athlete and also to USFS for coming through time and time again. Looking forward to another strong season for him!

Jason assisted Ted Barton and Mark Hanretty with commentary at the JGP Varese, and a ten minute interview with Jason starts at about 1:41 (his commentary starts afterward).

One of the best parts for me was Mark and Ted gushing over Jason, and telling him just how disproportionately junior skaters mention him as an influence:love:. and Jason talking about Rohene took lessons learned from a disappointing competitive career (not due to lack of talent, as Mark,Ted and Jason gushed over Ro's skating skills) for teaching the next generation.

While not exactly covering new ground, this interview was more personal and definitely very positive, as anything with Ted Barton tends to be. Jason's commentary was also very positive and supportive, as one would expect at a Junior Comp. I rarely watch Juniors due to lack of time, but I have to say that I was very impressed with Taiga. Seeing how he develops could be very interesting.

Two thoughts - I think Jason deliberately left out jumps in the Summer Sizzler program. I think he's still getting the choreography down. You could almost see where a jump would fit in. His 3A was very nice, however. The second thought is that I much prefer interviews with Jason when he isn't being silly and giggling too much. He has a lot to say and mostly pertinent comments about skating in general and some of the junior skaters in particular. He's a very intelligent and articulate young man and could certainly offer a lot of wisdom to up and coming skaters. But if he's going to be taken seriously he needs to either be more comfortable in an interview or just be more professional. I really did not like the interview with Gracie. It was almost embarassing. (again, this is my opinion and I hope I haven't ruined anybody's Wheaties)

Mostly, Jason has been articulate in interviews recently. And his commentary has been thoughtful and cogent. He had no prep before doing commentary with Ted and Mark and he did pretty well. He knew the Team USA skaters, so he could talk more about them. But just observing and saying positive things, was the job at that point.

Being interviewed by Gracie would be problematic anyway, because those two go way back and silliness was a big part of that. They were kids. And when they get together, to some extent, they are still kids to each other. I don't recall that interview. Probably I never actually heard it or saw it. I know that Gracie has said that he was supportive when she was starting to break down and things got bad. This could never be an objective interview between the two of them. I'm sure that when Gracie needed him for support, he was very serious. Now they just enjoy laughing together and remembering how things used to be and being glad that they aren't there anymore. So I wouldn't judge them for that interview. Jason will always be ebullient, but he's pretty mature in interviews now, I think. Just not necessarily with Gracie.
