Javier Fernandez

Thanks! I wonder how much Javi was able to communicate with his coaches back home in the end? The internet censorship does hit you hard here... time difference might make even phoning a bit complicated.

I hope he has gotten back home by now and is getting better!

E

I'm sure Brian would get up in the middle of the night, no matter any crazy hour, to get on the phone if there was no other way to talk to Javi. I can't imagine them not being in frequent contact in this situation, especially when things aren't going well for Javi, even more so if he's ill.

I wonder if Javi went to Canada or stayed in Europe as next week will be his France event? Hopefully he is totally fit by now...

I should think he went to Toronto because he needs his coach who is in Canada...

I also wonder how well he communicates the problematic moments to his coaches? Just thinking about Helsinki and how two people who must know him extremely well did not seem to notice what was going on in his mind...

I think Helsinki was different though. That happened in the last 20 mins or so before he took the ice. Who knows whether even Javi was admitting to himself at the time that something wasn't right? Maybe they could/should have noticed even if he didn't say anything, as a shift in mindset can often be picked up in the tiniest gestures, and as you say, Brian and Tracy know Javi extremely well. Still, it was all taking place in the course of a few minutes.

But here Javi seems to have been suffering from the symptoms before the SP already, and if the quality of his skating and the body language you described are any indication, he must have been in a considerably worse condition for the FS. That's well over a 24 hour time span, and I cannot imagine Javi and Lee not talking about it, or not involving Brian pretty much immediately.

I just hope that Javi can regroup and have a really strong showing in France. Even though GPF is probably out of the question now, I think an impressive showing there will do wonders for his confidence. And it will also calm down us nervous fans

Well I'm hoping for and will definitely need to see some very serious "calming down", because I will be killing my nerves watching Javi live in France! :hopelessness::eek::laugh:

Here is a new interview with Javi on Spanish ABC. Even though it must have been written before CoC, the title turned out to be highly relevant...

Well, yeah! Thanks for the link, too!!
I can translate it for those less fluent in the language, just let me know if you would like me to :)
It's a fashion supplement for ABC. And it's very poorly written (lacking punctuation, some spelling), I'm surprised they've published it like that :O
It's got mostly info we already know, but I think the interview itself is new. And Javi is such a sweetheart everytime, it wouldn't be a hardship to translate :D

Yes Please!

Ok! Here we go, then. Keep in mind that I decided to not translate literally in order to keep what I think is a closer feel to how he actually speaks! Also beware it's a fashion magazine, so some cringy-ness is to be expected :P not as bad as it could be, truly!

Javier Fernández:"Nunca hay derrotas, hay momentos de aprendizaje"

Javier Fernández:"There's no such thing as defeats, just moments of learning "

It starts with a brief introduction: he started when he was 6 years old (correct), he emigrated to Canada with 17 (?), and "with 26, he could make history at being the third Spanish sportsman at medalling at the Winter Olympics" (because as a double world medallist from Spain he hasn't made history yet, sighhhhhh). They do recognize his efforts to make the sport more visible in Spain in the next paragraph and proceed to talk about his preparations for Olympics. And then we have the interview itself.

Q. You've won twice already the World Championships. Don't you feel dizzy?

I wasn't expecting to get this high when I started my career, but it's difficult to express what's going inside your head. It's amazing.

Q. Did any of those triumphs leave a special cherished memory?

A. Everyone of them has got kind of a special flavor. But it's true that my first European title and my first world title were so large that it really makes you think bigger. It's a reward after years of very hard work.

Q. The Olympics are getting closer each day. Nervous?

A. I don't face them with anxiety but with enthusiasm. I want to give everything that's expected of me and finally get that medal that escaped us in Sochi 2014.

Q. What would you say has been key on getting here?

Constancy, hard work, eagerness, ability, effort. It seems like very few words, it seems like it's something simple. It's been hard to gather all this things everyday, but they have been my weapon for fighting each day and each year to get out to the ice and get out the best of me.

Q. It has been a hard year professionally speaking. Do you feel like you've changed somehow, or do you feel stronger instead, after the defeat?

There's no defeat, just learning moments that make you grow both as a person and as an athlete. They're difficult streaks, but you leave with more enthusiasm than ever.

Q. What would you say it's the most difficult part of your profession?

The cold! (Laughs)

Q. Nothing else?

After living alone almost ten years, and far from home, there are many moments where you miss your family, your friends, the Sun, the food, etc. But that's the price to pay for wanting to win in this sport, and for it to become slowly more important in Spain.

Q. If you weren't a skater you'd be...

I've never considered it. I like soccer, tennis... who knows!

Q. You define yourself as somebody who is "modest in dressing, and not a lover of flamboyancy", but it's funny how you always surprise everyone with your looks on the ice. Is it yours the costume choices? (? It's not like Javier has outlandish costume choices, but whatever I guess. As I said, this is a fashion magazine, so...)

I've always decided myself my preferences for clothing, but it's true that since I signed with Reebok I've got much more choices, and it's easier to choose a good set of clothes.

Q. Do you run away from the fashion world, or do you feel somewhat attracted to it?

I like it, I'm not obsessed, but clothes are very important in my sport.

Q. What's a must-have in your wardrobe?

Jeans, T-Shirt and a blazer Vaqueros, camiseta y americana.

Q. Confess: How do you usually treat yourself?

In some cologne I like or a watch.

Q. Do you take care of yourself, or do you run away from creams?

I like to take care of myself if I've got enough time.

Q. How are your training sessions?

Brief but intense. 3 hours a day.

Q. What do you do then in your free time?

I rest, I visit my friends and I do sports.

Q. What kind of sports?

When I'm on Holidays I like playing at the fronton, soccer, snorkel and running.

Q. What is Summum to Javier Fernández? [the name of the magazine]

A portal with style.

And that's it! I hope we get interviews with more content (maybe from a sports magazine next time!) as we get closer to the Olympics. But I'm glad he's relevant to this kind of magazines as well —seems like his Rebook and LaLiga contracts are doing some good when it comes to outreach!!

Thanks for translating this!

Well he's a handsome guy, usually makes good costume choices, and can be seen always very well dressed at galas and official events, so it's not surprising that fashion focused magazines show interest. All the better, because all kinds of different audiences can hear about him. :)

I'm sure there will be more and more interviews and such as we get closer to the Olympics. We know Spanish Eurosport shot extensively with Javi over the summer, and NBC also shot a fluff already I think. And I expect Javi will be all over the Spanish sports pages in the weeks before PyeongChang, especially being the single biggest reason to mention the Olympics at all.

Hopefully Javi is totally healthy by now and has gotten his strength back and been able to train fully for the GP France!!!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it as well!
Some fluff from his Instagram link ("there's no place like home"/"you're the best"; I don't know where the photo is taken though!), link (anyone knows who's that?)
It's funny because I usually use the jfls Tumblr to keep myself updated and they posted my translation of the past interview. So if you're the owner of that blog and follow this forum, thank you, your blog is awesome!

As a side note, in his home rink in Madrid, La Nevera (well, he's signed a contract with another one, Invernalia, I think, but La Nevera was his for a long time) they put in their website some interviews of young skaters in Spain, and it warms my heart when they all say Javi is their favorite skater (or top 3) <3

He looks happy in those photos in Instagram, so I'm guessing he's ok physically now, and ready to give his best in the next competition! It's going to be a though one, with Shoma Uno, let's see how they do. Vamos Javi!

Long time without posting here... I hope this competition goes well, Idk what to expect, but I want him to win :drama:
Above all, for all this people who are writing him off of the Olympics, when there's still a long time until them, and as the spanish saying "No es como se empieza, sino como se acaba" " It's not how it begins, but how it ends". I trust Javi and Brian and I know that he can produce a skate like Boston, and why not, winning all the quadters.
Go Javi, enjoy the competition!

People are so quick to write someone off. Really, I think that with all the writing off of various skaters going on, people will soon have filled a volume the size of "War & Peace". Soon there won't be any skaters left who haven't been written off.

So, yes, go Javi!:)

Layover at Helsinki right now, I am heading towards Paris within one hour and then Lyon and Grenoble Friday morning. Because of Javier's mind blowing performance of his SP at last worlds, Helsinki has something special for me. Good Luck, Javi, wish you all the best.

He did go to Madrid directly it seems - taken care of by mom and the new(ish) girldfriend has hopefully restored him to health (and to good spirits!).

When in Spain, he has used two rinks in the Madrid region, the La Nevera in Majadahonda and Invernia Valdemoro near where his parents live. Invernia had some problems in late 2015, don't know exactly what, but it seems they have regrouped and getting back into the game. Tracy Wilson was there during the weekend for a master class - I should think this was maybe somehow connected with Javi being in Madrid also, but he was not in the pictures published from the event.

I met evergreen and tureis in Helsinki and now we will all get together in Grenoble on Friday - can't wait!!! When I started going to competitions in 2015, I really had no idea that it would also mean meeting so many wonderful people from all over the world :luv17: I hope we can share good moments in this competition, but it sure also helps having people to share the pain with if that should be written in the stars...

I had forgotten about having made this at some point - it is an interview from the International Figure Skating Magazine about a year ago saved as a pdf. Hope the link works!

E

Javi in Madrid with Tracy AND Brian! :luv17: It's so wonderful to see Brian back in action!!! I hope both him and Javi are now feeling well and ready for the competition.
