Javier Fernandez

Javi posted this on his blog today (Google translated from Spanish).

I could not tell exactly what happened today in the first round of the Russian Cup. The truth is that both yesterday and today I felt very well in training, but when the competition started it took me longer than usual to adapt to the ice, and especially in the entrance of the quadruple Salchow. And it was not only in making the program, but I've also noticed over the previous six minutes warming. I have not had a good feeling with the ice.

Realistically, today's second place is not bad. We're just over halfway point of the first position, so it is far away the attempt to repeat the title and I won here last year.

I am already looking forward to tomorrow and get back in tune on the ice. I hope it's better feelings now, so you can earn gold and adding two victories for the Grand Prix Final. Let us not forget that the main objective of this Russia Cup is to qualify for the Grand Final in Barcelona.

Thanks for being there

An interview with Javier in Barcelona: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg98sEaiuWU

An approximate translation (any corrections or additions welcome):

Interviewer: Javier Fernández, World Champion and three-time European Champion, introducing the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona, that brings toghether the six best in the Grand Prix Series, Dec 10th -13th . How are you approaching this competition?

Javier: Very well. We really put a lot of energy and good will into it, after having had our best Grand Prix series ever, winning two events – which other competitors present at the Final didn't. [...]We want to emend a few mistakes we have had, and , most of all, we want to start competing and to win that gold medal I couldn't get last year here in Barcelona.
[With his nosism, he probably refers to his coach and his team in general. I found that funny.]

I: Javier, you're the best Spanish skater ever. Do you consider yourself somebody next generations can look up to?

J: Well, I'm a pioneer, and that helps. I've noticed that many children are taking up skating, they're happy when a new rink is opening, it's something special, something that I want to promote and I want to endorse this sport so as to increase its number of participants and its strength.

I: You, together with seven other Spanish skaters, have to train in Canada . You sent a petition to Consejo Superior de Deportes asking for financial help. How is it developing?

J: Well, it wasn't my doing, but I know personally the people who did it. Of course, it's good for sportspeople to have some sort of help, [...]but it's a bit the same concept with sponsors, it's a complicated issue. We are living in Canada, where training fees are very expensive, and Spanish Federation supports us up to a certain point. We need to obtain certain documents [I think he's referring to working visas] also for skaters coming up from juniors, that have no opportunity to train out of Spain, until we come back and found a school here and we can try and change the routine, making a big project so that skaters won't need to move abroad anymore. I think it's possible to achieve it through hard work and with the right support. We all want to change things, little by little.

I: You still lack an Olympic medal. Do you feel ready for getting one in 2018 in Korea?

J: As for now, yes, of course, there are still many important competitions before that, there's still much time ahead, but we really want to start competing and confirming my titles and I hope to be able to compete at top level at the Olympics, to get that medal I couldn't win the last time and to fight for the Olympic gold medal.

I: Good luck, Javier!

J: Thank you!
