Javier Fernandez

When Javi is finished competing, and if Yuzu decides to continue, training without Javi will be very different. They may be rivals, but they are the best kind of rivals. I am so glad they both ended up in Toronto with Brian.

I can't imagine what it will be like :sad4: I wonder though if Javi might stick around for a little while to continue his apprenticeship in coaching. I know he ultimately wants to return to Spain, but it would be interesting to see how much more he can learn once he is not focusing on his own competitive results.

Because his words at an interview during the Olympics regarding Russia's homophobic policies got misinterpreted. :palmf: It's amazing how people can believe that given that his own coach who he considers a second father is gay. I hate that media constantly brings it up, it's been almost three years...

He's not the only one to get in hot water over that. It turned me off at the time, but I've realized it's a no-win situation. These athletes are supposed to be gracious and never cause controversy, but then they are also expected to be spokespeople and role models, even though they have no influence over politics. I love his relationship with Brian and think it's the best testament. I think the sport as a whole is still homophobic, although I see improvement.

So Brian said in the latest episode of Ice Talk that he was back in Toronto. I take it he won't be going with Javi to Spanish Nationals? I'm not too surprised since, IIRC, he wasn't there last year either. He was with his Spanish coach.
Edit: I kept listening and he has confirmed Javi will do Nationals on his own, so he talked to him after the GPF to know he had a plan.
Edit 2: He said he talked to Javi and they exactly what happened at the GPF. He didn't practice enough and had too much going on. He seemed to be quite worried about his show. Brian said Javi does need distractions and that if next season he only practices and thinks about the Olympics, he will implode (*knocks on wood*)
Edit 3: Anecdote - Javi one lied to Brian. He missed warm up but said he came with his bike, up the hill to the club. But then he heard a younger skater saying he rode the bus up the hill and then got off

A new TV segment (I think)

It's a bit hard to translate since the ladies are speaking in a mix of Catalan and Spanish at the beginning. But Javi said he decided until relatively late in his career that he wanted to compete seriously. And that although at the beginning there may have been little or no domestic competition, the important thing is to stay motivated, enjoy it and try to do your best at every practice session which also gives you confidence for competition. They asked him if the fact that he knew he would eventually have to move out of the country to continue slowed him down in some way. He said it didn't it had been clear for him and his parents. They also asked if he regretted growing up so fast because all the sacrifices he had to do, and he said he doesn't because it made him stronger. They replayed the moment he won Worlds in 2015 and he laughed at his goat noises  He also said he's been training with Yuzuru for 3 or 4 years (4 and a half to be more precise, Javi  )
Seems like these ladies read his book as they knew he had returned to Spain after leaving Morozov and wasn't too sure about what to do next. She asked him what does Brian do differently for him to regain that motivation. He then said a bit of what I translated of his book about his time with Morozov: how the inability to settle down due to all the moving around was causing him a lot of stress. And that in Toronto, he is able to have a routine, to have everything organized, a place to truly live and people who truly care about him.
The move on to Worlds 2016 and the injury in his heel that didn't even allowed him to skate during practice. They asked about Effie! Javi said he is actually allergic to to cats, though nothing he can't stand. And Effie was a gift, he called her "a beauty of a cat" He usually doesn't let her go into his room, but when he is packing, she sneaks around the closet and gets into the places he doesn't let her go into. He talked about the picture he uploaded on IG and how he looked for her for over half an hour. And he wouldn't be surprised if he accidentally took her with him on his luggage.

Thanks for translating! :). Who is Effie a gift from? Aww he's allergic? She is cute. He is so gracious. I love so much what he is doing for the sport in his country.

Oh yes, I think that everyone needs some distraction(s), but not too many if preparing for an important competition..... I hope that for the Olympic season Javi finds distractions which do not distract him too much :laugh2:

People are still hang up o that? ReallY? :rolleye: I guess people choose not to see how he really is....

So that's why Javi plays playstation so much! He need to distract himself, and what's better than a game?

It's lovely to see the siblings together. But the way he looks in that and a number if other pics (on the hielo espanol fb page) makes me worried a bit - not a very happy-looking Javi...

E

The reports say he fell a lot during practice. He said the trip, exhaustion and the bad ice condition have taken their toll on him :( hopefully he will be better tomorrow (today for him)

It sounds like Javi needs a bit of a break. Once he gets Nationals over with, and his show over with, hopefully he can relax more and enjoy some down time before heading back to Toronto. It sounds like the last few weeks have been a little bit too much for him.

Yeah. I hope next season he will make his schedule a little easier if he will have a choice. Less travelling, more rest & training. Because it look like he have a little bit of marathon now... :(

The Spanish Nationals are streamed by the federation on YT:

SP just over (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIMjdGqRM5I&feature=youtu.be) - 3 senior men only, but at least he did not have to start this group ;) All the jump passes there, 4T+3T, 4S, 3A, none cleanly (shaky landings), but no falls. Spins a bit all over the place, but the judges were generous: 99,39. Not surprisingly in the lead...

I suppose this is the best sp he has skated this season, isn´t it? So fantastic to listen to Placido Domingo...

Not clean, but still much better outing than at GPF. Yes, Domingo's luxurious voice in the SP is always a delight to hear. :)
