Reading that article makes me really root for Javier to get an Olympic medal for HIMSELF, though Javier graciously says he wants to win it for Brian Orser. It's probably my biggest Olympic wish as of right now. He's done so much for the sport of skating and he's helped the sport grow within his country. I really, really want to see him win an Olympic medal of any color.

Heading to Helsinki tonight. Wish Javier best luck!

E, I look forward to meeting you there.

YES, evergreen, YES! Check your PM!!! Have a good and safe trip!

Greetings from Helsinki for everyone and please, should anyone else of you be here for this week, let's have some face-to-face time! Had a wonderful day touristering the city with my Japanese Yuzu-fan friend :luv17: Looking forward to the practice day tomorrow!

First practice day - a no show in the morning. I heard from my friends who had seen him at the airport that he had arrived, had seen the pics at accreditation, his music was there and played, but no Javi... I was rather surprised - he usually does not skip practices, got worried, but hopefully no reason to freak out.

Apparently his skates stayed back in Oslo (they had better get them here asap!) on Sunday. So, instead of the practice he went to hang out with the players of the local soccer club, Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi as part of his duties as the ambassador for La Liga

"Spain has only 17 ice rinks, but the world champion is Spanish"

The ball follows Javier Fernández obediently. Someone should have told the Spaniard to wear gloves - the gushes of wind at the football stadium at Töölö (Helsinki) is reminiscent of an ice rink and of the world championships that start on Wednesday.

The reigning world champion arrived in Finland on Sunday, but his skates stayed in Oslo. So Fernández had plenty of time to act as the ambassador for Spanish sports and La Liga on Monday, meet the players of HJK.

- I must have seen you national team play, but I have never met any Finnish players nor seen any Finnish league teams play, F. confesses honestly.

The Madrileno is a Real man and swears by the name of Sergio Ramos. He follows the matches of his own team as carefully as possible, even though somtimes it requires waking up in the middle of the night.

- If the match is very important, I will wake up in the middle of the night to watch it, like once when I was in Japan. It was El Clasico.

[This is followed by his early story until Morozov. The quote at the end comments on the money and sacrifices his training with Morozov required:]

- I heard only later how much money it all required. My parents never expected anything else from me except traning hard.

[Then the move to Toronto and Orser, the success etc. The quotes at the end on the first WC gold in 2015:]

He will never forget the miracle that followed the championship: the sports paper Marca printed his - a figure skater's - picture on the front page.

- It was unbelievable. Getting on the cover of Marca - out most popular sports paper - is an amazing achievement. Usually the cover features a footballer or a tennisplayer, says F. with shining eyes.

- For me it was a sign that I am trusted and valued as an athlete.

The historical nature of the event was also recognized at Marca and F got a framed enlargement of his front page.

[The info box contains nothing that is not already generally known in these circles.]

From YLE: http://yle.fi/urheilu/3-9533026 with a video on him doing some penalty shots (the goalie compliments his placement of the shots) and a short interview. The story is based on his life story and the quotes he gives on the video. At the end a short comment on the competition - it will be hard to reclaim his title, but if he keeps his thoughts in control and makes sure that he skates well, it is possible. He also mentions having admired Zinedine Zidane as a kid.
