Javier Fernandez

I know it wasn't landed most of the time, but Michal Brezina has quite early two quads in his programs, so he probably has a high number too... Anyway, these numbers are amazing! I think Nathan will try to be a skater who has jumped 100 quads in the shortest time though.

Good idea - but despite his long competition career, Brezina has 89 or so quads (figure not checked) between 2010 and now. He popped quite a lot of the planned quads.

Nathan has a chance to become just that if he decides to continue skating after the Olympics. His spring competitions will probably be OG and Worlds, which means he can get maybe 14-16 quads more arriving at 96-98 internationally...

PS Javi went to see the ballet Electra by the Spanish National Ballet and met Antonio Najarro in the process.

Yeah well, Javi and Yuzu could have also bombed. But I agree that these boys had a chance here to step forward, and they did nothing to make us forget for a single second about those who weren't there...

Javi news:

He is back in Spain and was invited to take the honorary kick at the LaLiga match between Getafe and Eibar. Apparently this match was specifically promoted for Japan, so it makes even more sense that Javi would be involved, himself being well known in Japan. ;)

Also, we have our first glimpse at the big Spanish Eurosport documentary on Javi. The section we see shows him watching himself skate to Touch of Evil. It's adorable how he taps with his fingers along with the music and makes little moves from the choreography.
Thanks for the links tureis!!
That documentary seems pretty interesting.
In the small fragment you linked the only thing they say about him is something among the lines of: "his day to day is very focused on trainings, which is where he's concentrated in", which is what the guy before him says.
The other two are the video editors talking about how they're working on Sunday and are going to run into trouble for too much work to the rest of the crew

I have finally checked each and every quad Javi has done in competition [...]
(whole post)

Wow eppen, so much work! Thank you so much! Amazing data, and pretty interesting comparison, specially in terms of success/GOE—and the difference between the "old guard" and the "SQuad" in that respect.

PS Javi went to see the ballet Electra by the Spanish National Ballet and met Antonio Najarro in the process.

I'm screaming— my friends went to the Opera to see it and I would have done the same but I'm in another country right now. They probably wouldn't recognize him, but still, AHH.
I won't be in Spain for Nationals either. Don't get me wrong, being abroad is awesome, but still...

Glad to know any sign that Javi is a well-known figure and celebrity in Spain although figure skating may not be that popular sport there yet. The wax figure quite resembles Javi's appearance. :)
If I’m not mistaken there was another fairly recent Javi wax figure done. I have to say this one resembles him a lot more!

This has been an intense week for Javi in Spain! He's also signed a new contract with Ynsadiet. So I wouldn't be surprised if we see promo shots of him suddenly becoming a healthy life guru :laugh::laugh:

Thanks for the links! I can translate some snippets of them that are interesting. Excuse my rusty English as always!! Add smoothness to it, he's a really charismatic speaker and I don't do him any justice!

Btw, I've definitely seen worse wax figures (specially in that museum, they're nightmare material). Javi's not bad, but what's with the clothes? I know they're supposed to be like the ones he wore at the Pirates of the Caribbean program but...not at all... What a mess!

About joining (as a wax sculpture anyway) the museum collection: "I'm honored, I'm very proud of joining this big family, and over all I have to say... Thank you very much" "Thanks for the help to all sports. Thanks for the help to skating. Let's hope we can see more skaters here in the future!"
About the sculpture: "It's difficult to see it when they start, but now that you can see it finished...it is a very good copy" [of himself]
Someone asks "do you think it resembles you?"
He answers: "Yeah, I think so, I think so. Not only the pose but also the smile and... Yeah, I like it, I really like it. I like it a lot!"

About the season: "I've had ups and downs this season, this 2017. There have been good things and things we need to work at. We're working a lot, having really high-level trainings. I can be proud of that."
About the rest of it: " Even then, we have the European Championship. We'd like to get another title there. That'd be the sixth consecutive title. And we also have the World Championship s after the Olympics, so we have three really important dates. But this is a Olympic Year, so...you could say that that's the most important card to play."
About retirement: "if I can't do it— if I don't do it for myself, if I don't continue for myself, then I'm not going to do it for anyone else. It's a decision to take after this season, taking into account the energy I have left. At the elite level of the sport it isn't easy. And in this sport... In this sport...you need to take into account so many details day after day, and it requires such hard trainings that I need to have a really strong willpower. And I need to really feel the desire to do it. So that's something to decide later. I would have liked... Well, no, not "would have liked" — I would really like to continue for a long time, even another Olympic Season, but we really need to think what we are going to do"

About the Nationals (next week): "We have two spots, only two spots for the Olympics Games, in the Men discipline. There's going to be a dispute for the second spot between two teammates, we need to see who's the best candidate, for this big date. And the only thing I can do I wish them luck, wish them both luck. It's going to be a really important competition for them. Someone is not going to be able to come...and that's really though, but that's how things have been. There are only two spots and let's hope that the one who does come has a great experience and enjoys it with the whole Spanish team"

Btw the Javiyoutuber videos for LaLiga are gold! Let me know if there's any that doesn't have any translations and I'll do my best!

Thank you so much for the translations, Mussique! My Spanish is way too rusty to get every word, so really helpful!

Today's news: Brian is with Javi in Spain!!! :gclap: Pics from this morning's practice in Madrid. Very happy about this because it means they really want to make the most out of every skating opportunity this season.

Can't wait to see Javi skate again at nationals! :hap10:

From LaLiga4Sports alphabet/athlete quiz tweets, letter J: https://twitter.com/LaLiga4Sports/status/941216338340487168 (the video shows he has had some time on ice despite all the PR activities)

The wax scuplture is as horrible as they usually are  Somehow most parts look indiviually ok-ish, but put together, the sum of the parts is less, not more.

E
I don’t know how hard wax figures are to make, but yes, they’re often average (just look at Yuzu’s, it’s like Javi’s: ok but could have been done better). But Javi’s face is mostly ok.
For sure, I don’t get why he has a pirate costume instead of one of his Spanish program (the red and black SP one would have been perfect).
But still, just the fact that he got one is a great thing itself.

Seems like they're streaming Spanish Nationals!
Today's at this link (there's no Senior Men till 19:20 GMT+1 tomorrow, the SP; and 16:40 on Sunday, the FP). If it changes I'll post it:

It was really good!! :luv17::luv17:He put the quad convo+quad even if he didn't need it. 4T+3T the quad was perfect, the triple a bit muscled in the landing but he held on. 4S marvelous, light, effortless. Really good 3A.
....for some reason he tripped on nothing and fell before the first flying spin, but continued as if it was nothing.
Even with the -1 deduction he got 107,73; which shows some good consistence from the 107,86 in Grenoble.

Let's hope the Free Program goes just as well!!!!

Sunday: https://youtu.be/QW6-NdLHQg0 I'll edit later if it doesn't work —that was what happened today.

Good luck Javi!

Even after watching the SP a couple of times, I can't quite figure out what happened in that step sequence. So I'll go with the old adage that the simplest theory is most likely correct: a lapse of concentration. But he fought for the 4t/3t and landed a beautiful 4s & 3a. Fall aside, it was an excellent short program.

There's no pressure on Javi in nationals. Hopefully he's just enjoying the chance to be home, to spend the holidays with his family, and to skate in front of all his countrymen. Javi has made quite a name for himself and has succeeded in putting figure skating on the map in Spain. What a treat it must be for all his Spanish fans who were able to watch him in person without having to travel (at least not far).

As it turns out, we are in Jaca, tureis, evergreen and I. This was not in the original plans but somehow it happened...

We come from different directions, so got together in Barcelona, drove up here yesterday morning and spent most of the day watching the Spanish novice advanced and junior ladies. That dance was exciting with olympic berth at stake. But the senior men was The Event, of course!

The rink is small and cold, but by the time of the senior comps it was almost full. The warm-up was already electric in atmosphere. It was the first time I saw the SP from behind, ie not from judges' side, and it works also that way quite well. Love it to death and it was worth the 107 points despite the skip in the entry to the first spin. Still can't quite understand how he managed to do it to level 4 and be perfectly on time with the rest of the program!

Seeing Brian here was an added bonus - it must be the first and maybe the last time for him in the Spanish nationals!

There was supposed to be a practice session for the FS afterwards, but it seems it was moved to this morning and he will be on ice with the dance or pairs or some such thing - there is no separate practice rink.

Between France and here, we also got two banners done and they debuted here. Or it was really tureis's brilliant effort but we did contribute ideas and comments... Unfortunately, the camera is on the other side and they will probably not be visible in the stream. We have not seen what they look like in place, but saw that the photographers took some shots (also with Javi!) and hope that they will appear in public also!

It has been a blast so far and the second day is still ahead...

E

Yes, that fall was unexpected, but did not disturb my enjoyment of his performance at all. Maybe he was too relaxed or there was something on the ice? Anyway, it amazes me how quickly he gets up from the slippery ice and continues as if nothing happened, WOW. Of course the skaters get used to that in training, LOL.

Eppen, thanks for the report and have fun today, too!!!

Thanks for the link, Chapis!!!
