Javier Fernandez

I wonder if Javier will not be competing at GPs, will he be able to do shows during the GP time and still remain eligible for 2019 Europeans (in case he still is thinking of participating there)? I remember that Plushenko had some show problems some years ago.

Well, unless it has changed, the TES minimums are valid for two seasons. So, yeah, he wouldn't have to compete anywhere before Europeans. But I have no idea about the shows.

As far as I remember Plushenko had problems because he had previously withdrawn himself from a competition due to injure and went to shows right after that (instead of supposed treatment).
Javi is free to choose where to participate.

Welcome, all lurkers! Be proudly (and loudly) Javi fans!

These days, skaters work so much and so often in shows that it cannot be a problem when their eligible status is concerned. Patrick Chan came back any without bigger problems, for example. The biggest problem can be that it affects your world standings which is visible in draws for major competitions. But Javi has still a fairly high world ranking after this year, so in Europeans in January he should still be eligible for the last group.

His plans for the fall and competition are still unknown in detail (I wonder if he himself knows yet!), but in the fan meeting in Osaka, he talked a bit about what the plans were a week ago. The Japanese post was translated into English by a kind soul and posted on Twitter. So, apparently no Japan Open as he will be doing all the preparations for getting his things from Toronto to Madrid, then at some point an international B competition plus the Europeans.

His show schedule continues first in Stars on Ice Canada in late April, after which he returns to Japan for the full Fantasy on Ice tour from end of May to end of June. He has a booking even for the free weekend during FaOI - announced last week, Heroes & Future in Nagano. Then he has to return to Spain in a hurry to prepare for the two weeks of the summer camp in Granada (July 9-21). I guess he will have/need a vacation after that!

(And it is maybe a little curious that he is not part of the cast in the Hanyu show next weekend after Hanyu saying so many times how he went to Toronto partly because of Javi and how much he has influenced his training and skating...)

Over the past couple of years he has returned to Toronto for training sort of mid-late August and been part of Brian Orser's camp in Port Carling. We'll see if he does that now. If he goes there already that early, then there will be time to get the program/s done for the new season (the rule changes will be clear only in June anyway). But as he will not be doing the whole season, that is, no GPs, but just a minimun of competing before the Europeans, I would be surprised to see him there in August.

Most of the Senior B competitions are held in September/early October, but if he won't have time to participate in Japan Open in the first weekend of October, I don't think he will go to any of the early competitions (plus would he be ready??). Then there are still Minsk in late October, Tallinn in late November and Golden Spin in early December. The two November ROI dates are 10th and 17th, so that rules out Warsaw. I would also expect him to do the Spanish nationals in mid-December.

It will be interesting to see what he will think and do after all the shows and the camp...

He did the old Petit Fleur/I Love Paris SP in a show version in SOI Japan (again - he did it also the previous time), plus participated in a men's group number, as well as in the opening and finale.

Plus today a new interview in Spanish made in March (19th as the ROI announcement was mentioned). And this, published slightly earlier in Hola!.

Some interesting and unusual questions, like where does he know Ronaldo's GF from (ballet classes as kids). He said Marina is the final push he needed to get his future in order in Spain and that he would like to have a family but they are both young and they need to see how they do on their jobs first. He is also pretty good friends with López Simón (bullfighter).

Well the shows overlap with Javi's birthday

Thanks! That is great, I just had some vague memory from Plushenko´s problems concerning shows, and felt worried...

So it seems like Javi will be attending Yuzu's show after all :biggrin

Interesting that the merchandise does have his name on it but he is not listed on the website  and well the news of him attending were released the day of the first show

Yay! :yahoo: Better late than never.

Interested in Yuzuru's annotation/commentary re his only named hero who is a skating contemporary and rival.

Javi was yesterday in Southern Spain promoting the Revolution on Ice tour (already!) and visiting the city of Antequera (which is the European City of Sport). Two videos: long and short news piece.

Then he went to Malaga and (again) visited the local football team with LaLiga4Sports. After the Champions League game where Real Madrid barely made it to the semifinals with a penalty, Javi did some penalties with creative entries... Two videos from the local media: first and second.

So, considering that he had work commitments in Spain yesterday, there was no way he could have been in Tokyo for the first Hanyu show (which is almost over already) - and I am not sure whether he can be there in time for the second show tomorrow leaving from Madrid maybe/probably today. It is all very curious, because his name is not mentioned yet on the official website or in any of the official social media accounts. There are apparently posters or some such thing at the rink that have his name there... Let's see first if he actually shows up in Tokyo!

What I don't get is that what effect could his birthday on Sunday have had on his being on the show? I saw some speculation towards that, but when has a birthday been an obstacle for doing something else on that day?

Many people (me included) were shocked not to see Javi in the list (nor even been mentioned). And since there wasn't any official excuse either, people started looking for excuses everywhere, birthday included. It was easier for me to believe that it was important for Javi to celebrate this particular birthday with his family in Spain than think that Yuzuru had ignored him.

I don't remember him ever doing something related to work on his birthday? Perhaps he would like to spend it with his family? But, leaving that aside, perhaps it was because of his commitments in Spain? Even if they only took place the day of the first show, the flight back and forth to Japan would surely take a toll on him (and time). As much as I would like for him to be at the last show I highly doubt he could even make it on time. :(

But whatever the reason it may be, at least it's not because he wasn't taken into account for the show (since he did show up one way or another) ;)

Yuzuru's words about Javi in his show's Guidebook
http://yuzuviere.tumblr.com/post/172917356521/ciontu-guidebook-javier

Some quotes:

“Before I went to Canada, I plan on holding a competitive mindset when practicing with Javi, but I didn’t know that Javi was that gentle. We never had a hostile atmosphere, contrary, we became very close and motivated each others’ skate to improve. My relationship with him is very important to me”

Javi is probably the first person that I genuinely feel happy for their success besides myself, because we train every day side by side, no matter good or bad. All the effort and pain we went through are something only the two of us know”

Bonus: On Plushenko’s blurb, he mentioned that he watched the Plush/Yagudin rivalry and expected that kind of relationship with Javi as well but one (1) kind-hearted Spanish man didn’t let that happen

Xeyra, thanks for the quotes above!!! Such nice words about the relationship between Javi and Yuzuru... Besides, I also think that Orser would never have allowed the Yagudin/Plushenko kind of situation to realize between any of his skaters. The general atmosphere on the rink has been really friendly (that is the impression I have got from interviews, etc.).

Well, actually, in the past couple of years, Javi has been on Stars on Ice Japan tour in 2014 and 2016 and celebrated his birthday on that work-related trip - in 2016 his bday was on Friday, so probably a show day, 2015 he was in Scotland doing a skating camp wth Javier Raya at that time. Last year was the first since Sochi when he has not been working somehow during his b-day and I think he was in Canada at that time (the Boston show was just before and then WTT gala after). So, you see why I did not think that the b-day excuse really was relevant. It is interesting to see whether Javi will show up there tomorrow...

The video message (if reported correctly) sounded a little impersonal which also seems to have been the level of interaction they apparently have had (at least in recent years). And from the quotes it really sounds like Javi's kindness and high tolerance level were the main reasons why their relationship remained at a somewhat friendly level.

the video message was actually longer and warmer, but I just translated the tweet as is. Later, more details were tweeted by fans. We will see when it is aired on TV.

Javi wasn't ignored. His name is printed on several shirts and other CWW merchandising articles.
It's on this entry list, too (Lambiel's not):
