Jeff ditches his LP

Jeff has decided to part ways with his Glenn Gould long program and go back to his 2003/2004 long program of Samson and Delilah.

It's probably a good thing for him. S&D was a better rounded program, IMO. I will miss the beautiful ina bauer near the beginning of the Glenn Gould piece, though.

Yeah, that Ina Bauer was absolutely gorgeous....that said, I think it's probably a good strategy. S&D was a great program too, as was his LP last year and hopefully by going back to something more familiar he can get a little more confidence and better results. He hasn't managed to skate this year's LP really well so far this year and that's not a good thing going into the Olympics. Can't wait to see how he does with S&D at nationals.

He did have a meltdown with it, but that was after a nasty bout of food poisoning, which resulted in a quick drop of seven pounds. I don't think we can hold that against the program.

It's true, and prior to the Canadian Nats Jeff had an incredible season, and he won Four Continents after.

I think its a good move. I actually had hope for liking him with that program, but since then I haven't enjoyed his programs at all. This is definetly a good choice for him.

He's the type of skater who feels the music. If S&D suits him better, then so be it.

I don't remember the S&D program. I guess in those days I wasn't paying attention to him, but I sure am now! Does anyone know who choreographed S&D?

Just a comment: When he announced last summer what the SP was going to be, I thought "YUCK!" But now it's become one of my favorite SP's ever.

I assume it was choreographed by David Wilson, because Buttle has said in interviews that he's been working with Wilson since he was eleven or twelve.

While I prefer S&D to Glen Gould, I'm afraid that some judges don't like to see 'rehashed' programs & may downgrade him in the presentation scores. THEN AGAIN....a 'rehash' of a past program didn't hurt Sale/Pelletier at the 2002 Olys, did it? [While the re-use of 'Love Story' *has* been cited by Russians & other officials as one reason why S/P lost the original Gold Medal.]

I think the Gould Tribute needed to be skated CLEAN for it to shine as another Wilson/Buttle "wow" piece. Unfortunately, Jeff struggled with the program all season.

It doesn't really matter whether Jeff's jumping difficulties resulted in problems with his execution of the Gould Tribute or, because the choreography in the Gould Tribute is such that the choreography itself resulted in jumping difficulties, either way Jeff struggled with the program. Every athlete wants to feel as comfortable as possible heading into their Olympic event, if you are preoccupied with what is going wrong, you are not focusing on what is going right. IMHO changing to any program that Jeff feels comfortable and secure in; is a good decision.

S&D was a Wilson program. Not my favourite program (really didn't like any of the costumes he used for the S&D program), but then again, Jeff isn't skating for me.

I think it's great he's ditching the Gould program. For me, it just didn't "sing" (as our friend Dick would say). I hope he uses the same music edit because he included the beautiful "Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix " section that some skaters (Orscher and Lucash) leave out.

I think most skaters do not want to drift too far from the Skating War Horses.

Boring for music lovers but good for the spectators with limited music appreciation.

Nice choice! I was afraid he wouldn't make a switch because it's so late in the season, but this is a program he's familiar with so it shouldn't be too uncomfortable. I've loved his past LP's and, indeed, the Gould program didn't have the spark that inspired the crowd or Buttle, himself. I'm used to a crowd anywhere in the world getting behind Buttle's interpretation and artistry, not falling asleep over the music! And he certainly didn't once skate the Gould program decently.

Does anyone know if Jeffrey is going for the quad at Nationals?

I agree about Jeff Buttle's gorgeous Ina Bauer. :agree: It was outstanding. I liked this new program very much, but I'm sure he has very good reasons for returning to a former program.

In watching his competition from Grand Prix finals, Paul Wylie stated, 'It's very hard to interpret piano music. The notes are unforgiving". When asked to explain this comment, he said (to paraphrase), "The notes are definitive. You can't give them an extra second or two. You have to interpret every note exactly as it is played." Nevertheless, I thought Jeffrey did a great job with that program.
