Joannie Rochette Article

I'll explain it to you. It is very simple. Most Canadians can't stand arrogance and Mira has it in spades.

that's simple enough of an explanation, thanks. But remember, if she was a top skater it would be that much worse.

Whoever stated that Mira is a lot like Tonya Harding is right--arriving to the competition late, being jetlagged, and basically thinking that the judges shouldn't ding you for your poor performance?

Wow...maybe Tonya should coach her?

I don't really know what's happened to Joannie. We saw her at Nats in London and she was hitting triple-triples like nobody's business. In practice, she was so solid on all the jumps. has she lost her confidence now that she's been figures in as a top-ten contender? I don't know. She has good technique and she has good flow out of the jumos so there's no reason not to eb able to put on the second triple, except the mental component. I think Joannie has to find some renewed belief in herself.

Joannie said that she was afraid of getting injured. She had had shin splints when she was training the triple triples and she didn't want to get injured again so she stopped training them.

"This season I didn’t want to get injured — I’ve had shin splints before — but I’m just going to have to do it. I’ve done triple-triple before in competition, and next year, I have to do it."

That makes sense to me and at least isn't some excuse like we've seen from others out there. One thing about Joannie, when she needs to work on something, she does just that!!

As for Mira...Who *is* willing to take on someone who won't listen to you and a Mother that would make Gypsy Rose Lee's Mother look like a lovey dovey?

But maybe the day will come where someone will overtake Leung in Canada and this will be a non-issue...or is that not going to happen?

From your lips to God's ears! I was really hoping that would have happened this year, but it didn't. Maybe next, though. One can hope.

It was stupid that Mira came to the competition so late and didn't even get to practice on the competition ice. Of course someone is more likely to have a hard time when it's their first time on a new ice surface. I don't think that she'll retire though because she talked about next year and she is still really young (and confident), so yeah, I think she'll stay on.

Gah, Joannie just needs to get more consistent... easier said than done.

Maybe Lesley Hawker should have went instead of Mira/hopefully Hawker goes next year... or Phaneuf?

I hope Skate Canada pays more attention to Lesley Hawker and I am Lesley learns how to control her nerves because I think she has more goods than Mira.

Kimmie arrived late (due to bad weather, not by choice) and the first time she stepped on that ice was in the short program, and she did well. While I agree that Mira should have arrived earlier, for energy sake, I don't think it would have changed the placement a whole lot. It is what it is. She skates on the flat of her blade more than the edges - I remember Kurt Browning saying how you never wanted to do this.

I agree with those who have stated that Skate Canada should focus more on Hawker and Phaneuf. Perhaps they should push Billings more as well. She has lovely presentation, but lacks the jumps and consistency. I credit Lesley for going to Callaghan to improve. I'd love to see her go to the Olympics.

Isn't Lesley in her mid-twenties, and actually just learned the tough triples? That woman can go places--she's got the work ethic of Tara Lipinski!

You're right, Lesley is not a teen, and she does have an incredible work ethic, both on and off the ice. She has worked so hard to finance her skating, and has continued competing just for the love of the sport. That is why I always cheer extra loud for her at Nationals. Well, that and the fact that her smile lights up the arena without the benefit of any electricity. :-) She is just really a great person, and I hope she will get the chance to go to Worlds next year.

Lesley will be lucky to squeeze into long program. Even I admire her spirits, I believe it's a stupid idea to waste resources on her when you have to compete again phenomons at their 16 & 17.

I wonder how much bad weather contributed to Joannie and Mira arriving at the competition late, too? I can't imagine travelling across the world, adjusting to jet lag, and having to compete with so little practice time beforehand.

I really like Amanda Billings, too, and hope she'll be a future contender, but unfortunately, she's also been injured and we haven't seen much of her this season. I hope both those things change next year.

I also hope Cynthia fully recovers from her growth spurt and various injuries and comes back strong next season.

BTW, Canada never really has had a strong program in ladies' discipline, that's not sth unexpected. To maintain top 10 is okay considering the extremely deep field at the moment. You can't expect to have everything.

Don't forget it wasn't too long ago that no Canadian woman could even qualify to compete at the 1998 Olympics and we were lucky to see our top ladies place in the Top 20, let alone Top 10. I agree there's still plenty of room for improvement, but when you compare the state of Canadian ladies' skating today to even less than 10 years ago, we've already come a long way since then!

Now that's a scary thought!

who do you think they should focus on? I agree with what you're saying. It makes sense to plan more for the future.

At least Lesley's attitude is way better than Mira's. She couldn't do much worse!

Lesley's long program score from 4CC would have had her placed 14th in this competition (yes, I know, different judges).

but dude, Mira WAS lucky she squeezed into the LP at this competition herself!

Joannie arrived earlier than Mira. It wasn't bad weather that kept Mira from arriving sooner. Joanne Mcleod said so in the article - it was definitely Mira's choice.

Her performance is much more sporatic than Mira Leung. She bombed SP terribly at 4cc, and she has much higher chance than Mira not to make to top 24 at worlds.

I believe Mira's ego really got in her way this time around. She thought she was well prepared, but got hammered in the SP especially she insisted it's a 'clean' program. Her mental condition might have taken a hit since she was expecting a top 8 finish.

Based on Mira's strength, if she got every jump done as at Nationals, at least she should have had no problem making into top 15.

And Lesley (and Joannie as well) just love skating and everything that comes w/it. I was at Ottawa Cdns last year and decided to get in line to meet the Ladies Medalists up in the Concourse on the Sunday afternoon. Lesley and Joannie were having a ball and were genuinely happy to be there chatting and meeting the fans. Mira OTOH...She really didn't chat w/you and when you looked her in the eye, there was nothing there. No spark, no life, nothing. She was there because she had to be there. Nothing more, nothing less.

We won't talk about Joannie's reaction to my question of if she got the box of Lindor Truffles and Birthday Card I'd thrown on to the ice the night before though. ;) I literally thought she was going to leap over the table to get to me to give me a hug.
