I'll explain it to you. It is very simple. Most Canadians can't stand arrogance and Mira has it in spades.
that's simple enough of an explanation, thanks. But remember, if she was a top skater it would be that much worse.

I don't really know what's happened to Joannie. We saw her at Nats in London and she was hitting triple-triples like nobody's business. In practice, she was so solid on all the jumps. has she lost her confidence now that she's been figures in as a top-ten contender? I don't know. She has good technique and she has good flow out of the jumos so there's no reason not to eb able to put on the second triple, except the mental component. I think Joannie has to find some renewed belief in herself.
Perhaps if she didn't arrive in Japan at the last minute, she wouldn't have had jet lag and would have been more rested!![]()
But maybe the day will come where someone will overtake Leung in Canada and this will be a non-issue...or is that not going to happen?
I hope Skate Canada pays more attention to Lesley Hawker and I am Lesley learns how to control her nerves because I think she has more goods than Mira.
It was stupid that Mira came to the competition so late and didn't even get to practice on the competition ice. Of course someone is more likely to have a hard time when it's their first time on a new ice surface. I don't think that she'll retire though because she talked about next year and she is still really young (and confident), so yeah, I think she'll stay on.
Kimmie arrived late (due to bad weather, not by choice) and the first time she stepped on that ice was in the short program, and she did well. While I agree that Mira should have arrived earlier, for energy sake, I don't think it would have changed the placement a whole lot. It is what it is. She skates on the flat of her blade more than the edges - I remember Kurt Browning saying how you never wanted to do this.
I agree with those who have stated that Skate Canada should focus more on Hawker and Phaneuf. Perhaps they should push Billings more as well. She has lovely presentation, but lacks the jumps and consistency. I credit Lesley for going to Callaghan to improve. I'd love to see her go to the Olympics.
Isn't Lesley in her mid-twenties, and actually just learned the tough triples? That woman can go places--she's got the work ethic of Tara Lipinski!
You're right, Lesley is not a teen, and she does have an incredible work ethic, both on and off the ice. She has worked so hard to finance her skating, and has continued competing just for the love of the sport. That is why I always cheer extra loud for her at Nationals. Well, that and the fact that her smile lights up the arena without the benefit of any electricity. She is just really a great person, and I hope she will get the chance to go to Worlds next year.

I wonder how much bad weather contributed to Joannie and Mira arriving at the competition late, too? I can't imagine travelling across the world, adjusting to jet lag, and having to compete with so little practice time beforehand.

I really like Amanda Billings, too, and hope she'll be a future contender, but unfortunately, she's also been injured and we haven't seen much of her this season. I hope both those things change next year.
I also hope Cynthia fully recovers from her growth spurt and various injuries and comes back strong next season.
BTW, Canada never really has had a strong program in ladies' discipline, that's not sth unexpected. To maintain top 10 is okay considering the extremely deep field at the moment. You can't expect to have everything.
Don't forget it wasn't too long ago that no Canadian woman could even qualify to compete at the 1998 Olympics and we were lucky to see our top ladies place in the Top 20, let alone Top 10. I agree there's still plenty of room for improvement, but when you compare the state of Canadian ladies' skating today to even less than 10 years ago, we've already come a long way since then!
Whoever stated that Mira is a lot like Tonya Harding is right--arriving to the competition late, being jetlagged, and basically thinking that the judges shouldn't ding you for your poor performance?
Wow...maybe Tonya should coach her?
Now that's a scary thought!![]()
Lesley will be lucky to squeeze into long program. Even I admire her spirits, I believe it's a stupid idea to waste resources on her when you have to compete again phenomons at their 16 & 17.

who do you think they should focus on? I agree with what you're saying. It makes sense to plan more for the future.
At least Lesley's attitude is way better than Mira's. She couldn't do much worse!
Lesley's long program score from 4CC would have had her placed 14th in this competition (yes, I know, different judges).
I literally thought she was going to leap over the table to get to me to give me a hug.
