(At NHK), Weir needed a four-man security detail to navigate his way through his Tokyo hotel lobby as dozens of female fans waited for him to sign autographs, snapping away with their cellphone cameras.

I heard that he received even more flowers and presents than the Japanese skaters in Men's division at NHK.

He analyzes why he is popular worldwide.

Why are you so popular in Japan?

It's not just Japan, but also in Russia, China, Korea. I think it's because I go into every country with an open mind and I don't go in with the attitude that I'm a superior American. I think a lot of people who travel, sportsmen, celebrities, singers and such, they go places believing that they are the best, that they have nothing to learn from other places. I think people can sense that (I'm not like that). Also, I hope I'm a good figure skater and Japanese fans appreciate that.

The last question of the part 2 is hilarious. Why ask that question?

Q: What's the biggest regret of your life so far?

Johnny: "The biggest regret is any time when I haven't believed in myself. It's a very cutthroat and cattys sport, and as I've gotten older, It started to realize that at the end of the day all you've got is yourself. In sport, in life, in anything, you have to trust yourself ..."


Sitting here almost 2 decades older than Johnny, I wish I'd realized this myself in my 20's! The toll lack of confidence takes on where you can get in life is tremendous. Wish I'd figured that out as young as Johnny has. Johnny really has his act together, for all his so-called flamboyance.
