Johnny's Reaction in the K&C

Very, very off topic here... (Although I still think it isn't fair for fans to criticize someone's reaction to something painful, especially if one has explained it.)

Costumes are a part of the artistry. If the costume doesn't fit the program, it will detract from the storyline. It's almost like an actor, playing Macbeth, who goes out in jeans and a t-shirt that says "I've Got Your Girlfriend's Number." Sequins are a skater's choice, and the choice is usually made to add something to a bland costume or to help the costume stand out to the audience/judges. If extra textures/deeper colors are not used, sometimes the motions will appear like a dark moving blur on the ice. Again, it's much like the stage, where actors use heavier make up to make shown the most basic proportions of their face.

I've seen lots of OTT, inappropriate and just plain fugly costumes on male skaters. Johnny's may not be to everyone's taste, but they usually fit his programs and his body type, imo. One exception is his first CoN costume from earlier in the season--and that was deliberately more "restrained" as far as sparklies go. I'm glad he changed it.

Someone pointed out that what works for Evan's body type would not work for Johnny's. They both have rather unusual body types--Evan's is tall, thin, and straight up and down. If you put him in a black body suit he would look like a stick of licorice. Johnny is not as tall, but he's short-waisted and has very long legs and arms. The one-piece costumes just flatter his body more than a shirt and pants type thing.

One thing about Johnny's costumes is that they usually look well-constructed. Some of these costumes, they look like the skater got it off the rack at Walmart for Halloween. And I know they aren't cheap. When I looked at HQ pictures of the Swan costume, I was amazed at how intricate and beautifully done the rhinestones, etc. were. It really is worthy of a museum, lol.

This thread has drifted, hasn't it? :p
