Joshua Farris

Whether or not he's skating at nationals, one thing is for sure -- Josh's 21st birthday is coming up tomorrow (the 6th). Wishing him an early happy birthday and hope he has a better year without any injuries or allergic mishaps!

Now that USFS has updated their 2016 qualifier list for Nationals, I think it's safe to say Josh won't be competing at Nationals.

We will miss you! :( Get well soon Josh! (Making good on my post #879.) I'm also sad it would have been fun to see some pics of Josh at Nationals with his roommate Joe. :sad21:

I hope that this means he will recover 100% before he comes back better than ever! I wonder if we will ever see whatever that "Pines of Rome" program was going to be.

While we are at it (and to change the subject), Happy 21st Birthday Josh! :yahoo: I don't know if he parties or likes to drink a lot but I guess he doesn't have a reason not to celebrate (safely, of course) with whatever food or drink that he wants. It's cool that his birthday is on Epiphany Day. Jesus traditionally got gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Hoping that Josh got some cool gifts like guitar picks, strings, or something he can record music with.

I'm sure he'll use it again next season, since it never saw the light of day. I am more curious about his SP. Will he now keep Give Me Love still, or will he get a new one? If he is well progressed in his recovery, he may use the opportunity to "do a Max" - that is, get a headstart on next season.

My heart is broken...I wanted so badly to see my Golden Trio together...and in person...

Sad for Josh. Not surprised at this point, but very sad. :sad21:

I completely understand and respect his decision to keep quiet, but I wish we knew more about how he's doing. Missing an entire season for a concussion he got over the summer is scary. I hope he has a thorough recovery.

:sad21::sad21: like everyone else.

For once a whiny guy with guitar song might be appropriate....

I'm assuming he will give an update on Twitter once he is ready and (hopefully) has some good news. Gabriella Papadakis is recovering from a concussion she got over the summer. Even though her and Cizeron skated well at French Nationals last month and I think they will improve by Europeans/Worlds, I'm not sure they will be able to compete well enough to defend their World title. And I've read that Gabriella is still stuffing from some effects (small headaches). But they are young - and so is Joshua.

BTW, here's a NBCSports article - Joshua Farris to miss U.S. Figure Skating Championships

Guess it's official - but I'm not surprised.

Anyway, in order to soften the blow and celebrate Josh's bday, here is the men's medal ceremony (courtesy of Sabinfire) from Feb's 4CCs. Nice to see Josh so smiley and happy - of the three guys - he has the widest grin.

That competition was so magical. It's bittersweet to watch and hope that such a talented skater will be able to return to the heights he deserves.

Apologies if this has already been asked elsewhere, but now that Josh is 100% out for the season, how does qualifying next season work for him, for international events and for Nats 2017?

In a nutshell (I believe this is right):

Worst case scenario: Josh has to compete at Regionals and then places in the top 4 at Sectionals.

Best case scenario: USFS has Josh assigned to some International Sr. Bs/GP events that because of scheduling gets him a Bye to Nationals.

I have no reason to think that the best case scenario wouldn't happen. I can't imagine Josh not getting at least one GP event and some International Bs. And I believe Christy Krall has some pull with USFS to help make it happen.

BTW, I briefly searched Josh's Twitter handle (joshdfarris) and the Happy Birthday/Best wishes for recovery tweets have been very kind. I hope that Josh takes some time to glance at some of them.

I was one of the many who sent him a birthday wish this AM - he's got a lot of fans so I'm not surprised that many have taken the time to wish him well. I do hope it will prompt him to respond. I remember when people learned about his concussion, he tweeted thanks and said he was crying. Awww...

Happy birthday Josh, may your new year be healthy, happy and successful! :cheer:

I'm missing him so much on the scene, but I'm sure we'll see him back better than ever next season. And it's lovely how many bday wishes he's getting, he deserves all of them

Per Hersh:

Farris’ coach, Christy Krall, said in a text message Friday he would not have recovered enough to skate at the 2016 worlds.

Thanks for sharing @golden!

I don't mean to seem ignorant about these relationships, but it is unusual that journalists would be able to get texts from athletes or coaches? But both have been in their industries for decades so I wouldn't doubt it if trust has been built between them.

This makes me feel better that Christy appears to primarily care about Josh: 1) being 100% recovered, and 2) being 100% ready when he returns to competition. It seems that Kori is being the same way about Jason and Jordan.

You can never be too careful, especially with concussions! It's good to see these coaches looking out for their skaters' well-being, not just the quickest return path. Long term, I think that's the best possible thing.

Wondering now what Josh's programs would look like when he returns. I would assume the unused free would be kept, but what about the SP? From a selfish perspective, I'm gutted if this lost season means we never get to see "Give Me Love"

EDIT: Meant see "Give Me Love" again, whoops!

Well, we've already seen Give Me Love. I was skeptical about re-using it again, but perhaps a gap of a season wouldn't be so bad to re-use it over. I do think he'll keep the unused Pines of Rome FS. I mean, it never even saw the light of day at Champs Camp, let alone a competition, so the freshness will still be there.

TSL's Jenny and Dave did say some kind words about Josh and his recovery update in today's 5 in 5:00.

I am assuming the unused free would be kept, especially if he really liked it. He probably spent a considerable amount of time and money learning it. No idea about the SP - if I had to guess, I would say he would go ahead and get a new SP.

But right now, the #1 focus should be Josh's recovery and getting back on the ice.

My two cents:

Anecdotally, Christy had texted Hersh on Thursday as well. The original version of his article as published on Thursday said something along the lines of (I'm paraphrasing) that a text from her on Thursday said (IIRC) that Josh had not returned to training yet.
Hersh updated his article after her text on Friday.

On a very general level (without knowing anything specific about how Christy prefers to interact with the press), I would add that it does not strike me as unusual for someone like her (meaning someone of news value within a particular realm) to be in text contact with a reputable journalist on the beat (such as Hersh).

I imagine that when Christy was Patrick's coach, journalists were even more interested in establishing a relationship with her. Back in the dark ages ;), it would not have been unusual for a journalist to have the hard-line phone number of a newsworthy individual. Doesn't surprise me that nowadays that texting would be a mode of communication.

Doesn't mean that the newsmaker is obligated to reply to every text or every e-mail or every voice-mail.
And for a journalist, it would be counterproductive to jeopardize a good relationship by being overly aggressive in bugging someone who has resisted answering a particular question at a particular time. It can be a fine line. If the time comes that a coach (or whoever) wants to make news on a certain occasion by speaking to just one journalist, someone like Hersh obviously wants to be the person who gets that call (or text ;)).

Yeah, a bit of a bummer that their first two stories were about two of our favourite Js withdrawing . They say Jason should go, they should both go and sit in the stands together and the camera can cut to them every now and again.

I definitely think he'd keep Pines of Rome! :)

Not sure about Jason, but I would bet that Joshua would probably want to watch Nationals at home with Lukas and cheer on Joe & Karina! Depending on what his concussion treatment is, he may not be able to take too much time away to travel. He may have to go in for therapy/checkups several times a week.
