Kaetlyn Osmond

Does clicking on a dislike icon make one a hater?:scratch2: Really? The comments are disabled for that video, at least they are now. Maybe someone wanted to leave a more nuanced comment but couldn't.

I'm just speculating; I've never clicked a dislike icon in my life. If you really want to see haters, look up the comments on Ashley's programs sometime.
I love Kaetlyn's skating, and I love the song; but this rendition is a little whiny for me. I fully expect Kaetlyn to wow me as the season goes on; I may eventually forget to hear the tone of voice. She looks great for early days.

Skylark, you are speaking to many of us on here who have lived it, including the constant "shade" from a few GS Posters over the past 5 years. With criticisms of Kaetlyn as always inconsistent, a wild jumper, too smiley, always overmarked, flutzes, only skates/scores well in Canada never internationally, will not be a top 6 contender, skates to showtunes and prostitute themes exclusively, and oh yes, ...did not earn her Olympic Team Silver Medal. I could go on to include some of the even more vile comments after her World Silver win by YouTubers, in what should be a highlight of a skaters career.

I appreciate that Ashley has her fair share of critics as well, but Ashley at least has the good fortune of coming from a country with a HUGE fan base; example, receiving over a 1.3 million views from her Boston LP performance from fans alone, while Kaetlyn earning a similar podium finish, will be lucky to get 50,000. With all due respect skylark, we Kaetlyn Osmond fans, are very familiar with constant critics and the pain they wish to inflict.

Footnote: Interesting how ABSENT on GS these critics are when proven wrong. Not to worry, as we know they will be back.

When a skater has haters, they're doing something right ;) just look at many of the top skaters male and female on this forum and by youtube comments lol/

The way I see it, haters are gonna hate, potatoes are gonna potate...

Hitting most of her jumps this early... good stuff. Definitely similar in layout, elements to last year, but a lot of people do that these days. It is easy to watch. I liked it. I can see it growing nicely.... much better, imho, than her short, probably because I like the music!

Her black swan choreography sort of reminds me of Gracie's Firebird/Daphnis et Chloé.

^^ I remember the new female co-host on TSL calling Kaetlyn's SP debut from last season "a cheesecake factory". After Worlds, the same host said she had predicted Kaetlyn's podium. Huh? Pleazzze :rolleye:

All aboard the backtrack train! Conveniently, it's located next in line to the bandwagon! Choo choo! :rolleye:

Sorry, Osmond4gold, I just now saw this answer. I'm not getting notices for replies any more. I need to fix that.

I appreciate this explanation, because I was truly only responding to the fact that a couple people clicked dislike for a program and were then called 'haters.' In my view, they could very well be discerning Kaetlyn fans who want to see her do well, but who don't think this program would help her in that quest. I'm not speaking for myself; as I said, I've never clicked on 'dislike'; but my particular (sometimes inconvenient) sort of imagination makes me look into the mind of someone who might have had good intentions and maybe wanted to say something positive but also wanted to give feedback.

Really? I don't as a rule pay attention to those numbers. Dang; that doesn't seem right for Kaetlyn. To me, she's eminently watchable with her interpretation skill, joy, and lovely expression of her music.

Most of the things you enumerated that Kaetlyn's critics say about her are exactly what Ashley's critics say. Not all, of course. The SA thread last year for ladies' SP was hijacked by a bunch of people comparing Ashley to a prostitute, in shocking terms:(. I had to beat an escape.

I'm love with the FS! Like the SP it will only get better :)

I finally got to watch the FS; and I too am in love with it. One of the things that really impressed me was how the footwork seemed rather frenetic; and once that thought emerged to the top of my mind, I immediately thought how appropriate it is: the character in Black Swan, the movie, is crazy. And then, casting my mind back to the earlier part of the program, I realized I'd been just a bit uncomfortable all through with it.

I don't know whether she's skating the whole program with that characterization in mind, or whether it was just this performance. I can see the latter in my mind, because she's so smooth and can capture different emotions. This early in the season, she's got a lot to concentrate her mind on, and I felt she was determined to get the jumps. Just my impression. I'm looking forward to seeing the development of this program as the season progresses.

If I am not mistaken, Kaetlyn once posted that she was a bit slow learning footwork and to be kind on her at first and used the hashtag #skaterwithbalanceissues

In both programs, I noticed that she has done an incredible job to be ready with difficult choreography early on this year but I also know that everything will get so much better in a month or two. What is striking IMHO is that she is already ahead of her own level compared to last year at the same time.

Regarding the word "hater" maybe I used it a bit too freely... but honestly, like yourself, I would say that most people do not use the dislike function unless there is something drastically wrong with a video or performance... or unless they are "haters"... as a chiddy fan, a lot of times, i have encountered many thumbs down on the youtube videos and sour comments from fans of skaters he had beaten. Even when Patrick was on top of his game and performed the hell of a program, he would get negative comments and thumbs down.... so, upon Kaetlyn's release of her programs, I can say with confidence that the negativity is not coming from fans hoping for better programs, but from people knowing that Kaetlyn is a real contender and not liking the idea that she could indeed be on the olympic podium instead of their faves....
Of course, social media can be used by kids and perhaps a bunch of immature people think it's fun to belittle athletes' performances on there.. I am just sensitive to it because of what happened to Rebecca Marino (emerging star tennis player who retired at 19 y o due to a depression related about the social media bullying and pressure)and also because of the constant nagging all Canadian skaters get on GS by a few specific posters...i can easily imagine it's those people who may have clicked on the thumbs down

I was surprised by the number of dislikes for the YT videos of Kaetlyn. However, she's not by herself. The YT dislike button has been getting quite a work out in the summer comp videos of many skaters. I'm perplexed by the phenomenon.

^^ humbaba, I think it comes with this new territory for Kaetlyn. I just looked at her 2016 programs for the same event and there was not a single thumps up or a thumps down, for either her SP or her LP.

Now, as the reigning World Silver medalist, and as 4everchan referenced, everyone has their opinions both positive and negative on her programs. I expect more of the same this season now that she is viewed as a skating star to many of us, while for others, ...a threat.

Sorry, Osmond4gold,

No "sorry" required skylark, I just wanted to let you know that we too have felt that same pain from these constant critics who wish to do nothing else but insult and denigrate these elite athletes, in order to promote their own. If I were a skating coach, I would ban my athletes from reading such forums as I still remember (being a dad here), that old saying, it takes 10 positives to get over 1 negative.

I once received a "Thumps Up" on here from a Poster, I had never seen on GS previously, who had a similar last name as a prominent skater (not KO's, ....honestly!). The Poster had been a member for a few years the profile said, but had never posted to a single Thread. My post was in defense of a skater from these same critics. To this day, I think how tough it must be on a skater, their parents/families, to read certain posts and I thought in a way, this could have been a gesture from a relative, appreciating the fact that someone had attempted to change the conversation from a negative narrative. Not that we cannot be constructive (suggesting a skater should try a different jumping pass, as an example) but there is a difference between that and being mean spirited.

I agree. I'm especially impressed with her Black Swan program. To me, it's so wonderful to see Kaetlyn skating the way she is after such a long road back from injury. And especially, that she expressed this, when she said that until she was able to skate and compete again, she hadn't even realized how much she'd missed it. You can see that joy when she skates.

.... so, upon Kaetlyn's release of her programs, I can say with confidence that the negativity is not coming from fans hoping for better programs, but from people knowing that Kaetlyn is a real contender and not liking the idea that she could indeed be on the olympic podium instead of their faves....

Or, from someone who just didn't like that particular program. Even if it's just one of the clicks. The possibility exists. :)

Boy, is that ever the truth. It's surprising how many critics think they're being constructive with their criticism, but they forget the flip side, that we often learn more from hearing what we do well, because then we feel encouraged to do more of it.

I think it was Patrick who, some time in the past year or so, was asked what his strategy had been during a competition when he had a good performance. He said that he'd tried to focus on the things he'd done in the past that had made him successful. I was really impressed by that.

On a road trip, I once heard a 2-hour interview on PBS of James Patterson. Not a favorite author of mine, but the interview was great; he was forthcoming about his process, friendly, charming. They opened it up for phone comments; he got a couple dozen raves from readers who loved at least one thing about his books and were specific. Then he got one negative comment. About 20 minutes later, he referred to that one negative comment. The host was bemused ... all those wonderful comments, but he couldn't let go of the one negative. Just goes to show what we humans have in common.

Oh dear...the Russian ladies thread is becoming a bit unhinged. Perhaps the KO videos are causing pause for concern re the potential of a Russian Olympic podium sweep. Here is the latest post by exasperated Poster, "unplanned", after multiple Osmond exchanges;

"Anyone interested in the results of the closed skates in Novogorsk? Or you prefer discussing Osmond in Russian thread?"

i went calculating base values with this new combo... and it doesn't help Kaetlyn at all... :( even if she were to repeat flips and lutzes it would not change much her BV....

I am thinking Ravi is playing with us ;)
