Kazuki Tomono

Thanks for the update! Do I spy a 'Tomono' tote bag in Kao's hand :giggle:
https://mainichi.jp/articles/20231026/k00/00m/050/017000c has a quote from Kazuki: 'I just need to stay calm and do one thing at a time. I am not in bad shape.'
Furthermore, we have a joint Kazuki x Sota interview! It'll be published on the December edition of fashion magazine 25Ans, which will be published in Japan tomorrow: https://www.25ans.jp/lifestyle/skate/g45621509/kazukisota-interview-231025/
The format of the interview is that they answered 25 questions, and the first three were published on this link. I thought the difference in focus/answer in this one was quite amusing:
If you could change for a day, who would you want to be and what would you want to experience?
Tomono: "I would like to be Kurt Browning, a famous Canadian skater, and experience the feeling of moving my body freely. I would like to be able to show my technique, and on top of that, I would like to be able to perform in an interesting and cool way, with complete freedom. Especially that footwork, which is something I will never be able to imitate!"
Yamamoto: "Well...if it were now, I would like to be Ilia Malinin. I would like to do a light quadruple, or a quadruple axel, followed by a triple axel, followed by an unbelievable combination. It's a skill I want to acquire, and I mean that as well."

Good to know everyone is safely in Canada, hopefully not too jetlagged, and everyone seems to be in possession of their luggage. I'll have to give that to Japanese Fed, they seem to always pick carriers that don't lose luggage. At least I don't recall the last time a Japanese skater had to use someone else's skates.

About the 25ans answer, I am not surprised. Kazuki is already one of the best in the performing/musicality department among the men, and it makes sense for him to look up to a skater who is famous for superior artistry.

Yeah I thought it was interesting that Kazuki's answer was about artistry/footwork, whilst Sota's was about pushing the technical/jump boundaries. There are no right/wrong answers here, both are important parts of the sport! It just made me smile as I remembered what they said on the non-no interview about being opposite type of skaters, "the tiger and the dragon" 🐯 🐉

Thank you so much! :love2: Again, that pesky salchow... But he's skating is looking soooo smooth, and the commentators mentioned the height in his jumps. He also seems physically stronger compared to Nebelhorn, which is great. Overall, I'm pleased 😊

Here's a press report: https://www.nikkansports.com/sports/news/202310270000371.html
Kazuki Tomono expects a "sparkling" GP, and a new sponsor agreement will also give him momentum.

Kazuki Tomono (25, Uenoshiba Skating Club), a male figure skater, said that he had high expectations for himself. "I want to see myself sparkling in the Grand Prix," he said.

On the 26th (27th in Japan time), a day before the start of the second round of the GP series in Skate Canada, after the official practice session at the Vancouver venue, Tomono said, "There's something inside me that wants to see me do well. I've started to get decent results in other matches, so I'm hoping for a little more," he said with a smile.

In his seventh season, he has yet to advance to the finals, where the top six finishers from the six rounds of the series advance. As a person who has shown steady growth, including sixth place at the World Championships for two consecutive years, I would certainly like to see him shine early in the season.

He has also recently signed a partnership agreement with Daiichi Sumiken Group. He said, "I was approached simply because I am a local player. I'm grateful for the opportunity. "It's a little bit at a time, but if I work on one thing at a time, I'm sure someone will support me. He will also open up a bright future with further success.

(Daiichi Juken Group clarified on Twitter that they are not supporting him just because he is a local skater, but because they really like Kazuki's skating).

Kazuki's skates at 9:27pm local time today (Friday), that will be 5:27am for me so *maybe* I'll be able to watch. But watching the free, no chance 😭

And his facial expressions!

Jackie Wong picked Kao for gold, Kazuki for silver and Jun for bronze..Said he had never seen Kazuk so prepared this early in the season
I should have known, every time Jackie predicts Kazuki will do well, he doesn't... 😑

Kazuki has been expressing his concern about the quality of the ice at the Skate Canada rink since the very first day of official practice, he said it felt quite slippery (literally speaking, not metaphorically lol) and that made it harder for him to do ultra-c elements. If you notice in that footage of his first SP run-through there is a moment he almost slips on his back as well, and slipping during the steps in the competition is highly unusual for him, even in the most energetic programmes.

He said he was still feeling worried on the day the SP as he felt he hadn't adjusted to the ice, and IMO this worry really was visible throughout his performance and especially affected his jumps 😕 BTW, Kao Miura also voiced his concerns about the ice in Vancouver and Junhwan had that freaky slippery fall after his 4T, so I don't think Kazuki is alone in this. It's amazing that Sota can perform well in these conditions, but overall I feel really sad for Kazuki and the other competitors - what should have been an amazing event ended up full of rough performances because of the dodgy ice.

wow, I didn't know about the issues with the ice :[ That's a shame. Hopefully the ice will be harder for the FS?
So, I finally watched all of the men's SP literally a few minutes ago (busy day, and I ended up sleeping through the live coverage in the morning... the archived stream saved me). Kazuki did well, all things considering! Our commentators did notice he seemed a bit tired or off, and now that you mention the ice, Kirara, I think we know why. There might have been a bit of jetlag as well... I'm pretty sure that when he skates that program with a relaxed smile later in the season (I'm predicting at Nationals :) ), we'll be seeing a different level of points.

Nevermind, today, the slate is clean again for Kazuki, and I'm fairly sure he'll medal! If he does really well, I don't see why he couldn't win.

I hope Sota considers adopting Kazuki's flying camel spin until his shoulder gets better. It doesn't seem that hard on the arms, and it rotates quite fast and effortlessly.
Ganba for the free, Kazuki! :cheer:

I listened to the Adam Rippom/Ashley Wagner podcast.. Adam's podium predictions are Kao gold, Kazuki silver and Jun bronze..Adam said that this could be a "break-through" .. for Kazuki..
Oh really? But technically Kazuki got on the podium last season so it was a “break-through” for him then. I have no doubt he’ll make the podium again.

Unfortunately, that happens with ice. It’s so bad especially for skaters who skate at this level because they want to do their best and it’s hard when the ice isn’t what it can be. If the ice is extra slippery, maybe it’s because the ice was just smoothed down when they took the ice. Once the ice gets skated on and has many cuts and small holes from jumps, the ice doesn’t feel as slippery. It can feel choppy but that might help a bit (avoid the holes though). Hopefully it’ll be better for the long program soon. Fingers crossed 🤞
