Kazuki Tomono

This is what I understood some months ago, and I added him to my prayers for skaters' health, along with Kao Miura and Sota Yamamoto, they're "my latest".
Also, being underscored while another skater is so much overscored must be very unsettling.

I felt so sad for him at Skate Canada International. It seems like a pattern: a good SP, which gets undone by his FS. Not that his FS was bad: too good competitors (and one of his Japanese rivals especially this time) and his own skate just wasn't good enough. He is still a joy to watch. Always.

@DizzyFrenchie Kazuki is now recovered from the injuries so you can take him out of your 'injured skaters' prayers - thank you! His issue is mental 😫

NGL I'm very angry at Kazuki. I want to shake him by the shoulders. What do you mean you are in great shape, with a real chance of earning a GP medal in the Olympic season and you let it slide like that. Worse, you let Kao medal, your direct competitor for the Olympic spot?

Sorry about the vent, I know 4th place is not so bad, and this is his highest score ever for a 1st GP event, but it still not enough for the Olympic season with such a deep field as the Japanese Men. As it happened so many times in his career, he had a door open and he couldn't go through. Aaaahhh I'm so frustrated 😤

I understand where you're coming from, but can we agree that a) Canada is kind of cursed for Kazuki, b) there's still one more GP to go, and c) Kazuki usually leves his best for Nationals and the subsequent big competitions? That's where he could have an edge over Kao. The first GP is over and Kazuki's score wasn't much worse than Kao's, so the game is still far from decided. Who the pre-Nationals game *is* over for, OTOH, are Tatsuya and Sota, whose OG chances are very low at this point, while Kazuki and Kao are currently in a more or less equal battle for #3. So, I don't think I share your sentiments in this case.

Kazuki did what he could at that time and just couldn’t make the podium. It wasn’t his fault. Surimi I agree it isn’t over yet. He can still get on the podium at Skate America and Nationals. Hopefully he can rest a little while still train over the next week. When he gets to America, I hope he treats himself to something special. Treats are good.

Ok, everyone, I have now gone through the five stages of grief re: Skate Canada and reached the acceptance stage 😅

The thing for me is, in a situation like that, you have to take every opportunity to make your case for the Olympic team, and to me he didn't take the opportunity as he should in the free - I'm not even talking about the quads, but he messed up/lost levels on spins and even his 3lo got a q call. These cost him a few points and made a different in the final standings.

But oh well. IMO the race for the 3rd spot is still quite open, since Tatsuya and Sota haven't had their second GPs yet, they might bounce back like Kao did. Of course, there's still Nationals... Kazuki better get his act together ASAP.

I really wanted to know what he's really thinking. His interview sounds positive but his face/body language says otherwise 🤔

Interview in Japanese but, as usual, behind a paywall:

Some gorgeous pics from Skate Canada:

FS Gossips posted a translation to his comments to Nikkan Sports: https://fs-gossips.com/14668/

“Each competition is a turning point to see how well I can perform under these circumstances. On the positive side, I’ve made progress, and the number of avoidable mistakes has decreased. But there are still areas I could refine further,” Tomono reflected after the competition.

Tomono’s free skate started on a strong note as he landed a quadruple toe loop-double toe loop combination. However, he fell on both his solo quadruple toe loop and quadruple salchow attempts. He also under-rotated his triple loop, resulting in a point deduction and lost balance during his final spin.

“I don’t think there was anything shocking about my mistakes. But if I ask myself whether I delivered everything perfectly as usual, the answer is no,” he admitted candidly.

Looking ahead to his next competition, Skate America, the fifth Grand Prix event scheduled for November 14–16 in Lake Placid, Tomono expressed his determination: “Even if I make mistakes on my jumps, I want to give everything I have in all other aspects of my performance.”

Well, it is Monday night in Japan..long flight, plus flight delays in the US..and not a word from Kazuki since Skate Canada..and maybe some questionable weather..
That's a good point, I hope they manage to get there somehow, but it sounds so stressful 😰 and you're right, not even Hiraike-sensei posted about Skate Canada... Hope they'll be ok.

Team Japan arrived in Lake Placid, phew! Kazuki looks cute, penguin vibes 🐧

Here's the press report with a quote from Kazuki - glad to know he's still in good physical condition.
Kazuki Tomono (Daiichi Juken Group), who finished fourth at Skate Canada, the third event of the season, and now competes just one week later, stated: "I've had a proper rest and managed to train well. I feel I've managed to adjust my physical condition nicely." He expressed his determination: "If I'm aiming for the Final, I reckon winning is probably the only way. There's no room for error now, so in a good sense, it's 'all out attack'. This time, I want to channel that mindset to bring out my strength. I hope to make it a competition where I push forward aggressively with an attacking stance."

Albany Airport..Hopefully they have a safe ride by car to Lake Placid...unless they are taking a smaller plane from Albany to LP

Another 🐧 picture

and Daiichi Jukken and HD Holdings went to the temple together to pray 📿 So cute!

Deep Edge Plus posted an article about how this is an important competition for him to potentially make GPF and the Olympic team: https://deepedgeplus.kyodonews.jp/column/short-column/135510/

Which makes me think of the last time he was at SkAm... He finished in 5th which was a great result for him at the time. The idea of him ever getting close to GPF didn't even cross anyone's minds back then. Whatever happens, I'm so proud of how far he's come 🥹

I watched the practices on Peacock. Jean Luc Baker who was doing commentary loved Kazuki's program. Jackie Wong said it was his fav.
Yep, here it is, but they put some horrible AI music on it 😫

Practice notes from Jackie: Tomono: 3Lo, 3F(step), 3A, 4S, runthru (4T(turn)2T, 4S(turn), 3A), 4T2T, 2S, 4T3T, 4S, 3A
Not stellar like Skate Canada but maybe that's for the best

"Believe in myself and go for the win" Skate America practice

A funny pic with Tatsuya - apparently they were posing like a comedy duo but they both were playing the same character (the tsukkomi)

Fan pics:

The schedule of SkAm this year is unfortunately horrific for those of us in Europe, so I won't be able to watch him live - @kwanette I'm counting on you to do the cheering!

I think so! In my experience, not so great practice often translates into a great program, and vice versa. :]
Good luck, Kazuki! :cheer:
