Yeah, I can see this video. Thanks ^^

So... how do you like his hair at PIW? (I'm pretty sure his hair is still ramen though!)

His hair sure had better days but I don't want to be hard on him, he is cute regardless ;)

Hi everyone!

First of all, I am dead. I'm typing this from my grave after seeing today's pictures of Kazuki wearing rabbit ears:

https://twitter.com/113xr/status/1124623743957921793

I mean, what to say after this????:love::love:
(he went back to the Riverdance hair style, AQFS must be happy!)

Second, OMG that new EX looks LIT. I cannot wait to see it!

Okay, one by one...
Quadruple Axel tweet: " I presented my new ex ("Freaks"). It's a really intense number, but I enjoyed skating to it and I'd like to bring additional excitement to the show in the next one again. It was the first performance in Reiwa, so I got psyched up too. I want to absorb various things in the future too, to grow/improve more and more."
Kiss & Cry tweet: "The moment the era changed to Reiwa, I got really psyched up. I want to absorb new things to grow."

And to add to our excitement here is the first look at his costume

https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2019/05/03/0012297702.shtml
Daily Sports: (skipped the first intro) He appeared in a red costume. With his Super-sharp dance on the strong beats, he brought an excitement to the venue. "It's a really intense number, but I enjoyed skating to it," said Tomono. In his performance, there was also a part of choreo where he used a music instrument. With the new era of Reiwa starting, "It doesn't feel so different from usual days, but I got psyched up as it was the first performance in Reiwa. I would like to absorb various new things one after another to grow/improve as I age," he said, looking ahead.

A kind soul uploaded the full athlete check program. This mark the part for Kazuki that Tsurara mentioned
https://youtu.be/Xy--Q-RfNX8?t=299
He was doing some jump measurement, and at one of them (can't really remember but jumping only on one foot?):
Examiner: 40.9 cm
Tomono: Hmm (said, not as good as expected or something along the line, but can't remember the exact word)
Examiner: You had 40.8 cm last year.
Other skaters: Ohhhh! (amazed voice)
Tomono: ...... almost the same, isn't it? (<- tsukkomi)
Thanks! Okay, The conversation on the measurement part was when he was doing a jump with both feet lol
What he said was, "あかんわ" (No good) and after others saying Ohhh, he said, "いや、全然上がってなくね?(Wait, not at all higher/better (than before), is it?)" and someone (examiner?) said, "Yes, 1 mm higher!"
The interview part: "This is a season I felt(faced) a wall, that's what I thought. I was able to find a lot of issues, and I could feel how hard it is to compete on the senior level. So, to be stronger in the next (season), this was a good season that let me find tasks (areas to improve), I think. Of course, a lot of frustrations I had, but I guess such a (struggling) season was necessary for me."
(The video of Athlete Check Part 2 explains a bit on the exams they did and quite interesting. I recommend you to check it out too, even though Tomono-kun wasn't in it, because most likely he also did the same things.)

ETA: Forgot to add, but I think he's also at 03:16 for a very short moment... isn't it him?

(he went back to the Riverdance hair style, AQFS must be happy!)
I think his hairstyle is what ppl call "soft two-blocks" with perm in Japanese and can just do his hair (styling) kinda freely. (casual undercut in English?) From the photos fans are tweeting, his hair on May 4th looked more like fettuccine or fusilli rather than ramen.

BTW, what is LIT (what does it stand for)?

Okay, here's another one

Fan "Kushi-age? Then, ramen later?"

:rofl2:I just laughed so hard, Tomono-kun felt like he had to give correct info to his fans even on such a small thing!

Oh, one more thing

Hahaha it's not an acronym, the caps was just me being extra
'lit' is the past tense of the verb 'light' and it's used as a slang to describe something exciting and awesome ;)

Ahhh! Could it be a translation for キレッキレ maybe? キレ is actually "sharpness" in movement, and repeat twice to make this slang for praising great sharp dance/movements. (I was thinking of "flickin" but didn't sound right and wasn't sure.

Hmmm I'm not sure, because 'lit' can be used for virtually anything, not only dance/movement. You can say 'the party was lit' or 'this film looks lit', for example. Or even to describe a fictional album cover: https://twitter.com/fanpower98/status/1125388030452359168  But beware because it's a very informal/internet slang term, so please don't use it on a job interview or something like that

Yes, I really loved all the updates and especially the video of the 4lo! I thought it looks very promising, his technique is good, but as expected he needs more strength in his legs/hips to pull himself higher and make the rotations with no issues. But great attempt, nevertheless! I'm very impressed.

He also posted a story with the many otter plushies he got at PIW: https://twitter.com/KiraraChin/status/1125348256245059585

Ha ha, I guess 'lit' is more like 'yabai'. Maybe I should just go with 'fricking sharp' for kire-kire. (Not like kire-kire is appropriate on a job interview!)

According to some fan tweets, it seems that Tomono-kun is calling Shoma 'Shoma' without 'kun' and I didn't know that. I wonder if they consider themselves the same age by figure skating year? (They will be soon in a few days anyways.)

I really loved his Riverdance green costume a lot, but now I look at his photos in red jacket for the new ex, he definitely looks best in red.

Would you mind explaining a bit more what does dropping the -kun means, Tsurara? I seem to recall in Japan you don't call people by just their name unless you're fairly intimate (e.g. a very close friend), is that true?

I agree with your opinion on the red, he does look great in it!

Generally speaking, you can drop those honorifics either when you're very close to the person (intimate) or you're senior to them in the same group you belong to (e.g. you're their older family member, senpai, teacher, president, etc.) Or, when the person is a celebrity or famous enough and you don't know them in person. Please refer to a Japanese language guide for general rules on how/when to use different honorifics because it's too complicated to explain all here.

That said, Japanese figure skating community has a sort of a bit odd culture/tradition, according to this ex-skater blog page (I've linked to another blog page of his the other day, if you remember), so do not always take their habits/customs/traditions as something normal here! Please do not follow those for your real life interaction with general Japanese people

Their tradition, according to the blog owner who was once one of them till recently (I heard of it from some other sources too but don't remember where), is 1) they call their senpai with "kun" (instead of general "san" or "senpai"), which hardly happens in general communities here except for some idol groups, 2) they sometimes even drop "kun" for those they consider the same generation or same age (like 1-2 years difference doesn't seem to matter much, and some exceptions depending on their characters/personalities and/or environment, e.g. Dai-chan for Daisuke T), although you could be in deep trouble outside the skaters' community if you did so to someone senior by Japanese academic calendar (starting in April). I often read in interview articles that Koshiro is calling his senpai, Kazuki-kun, Shoma-kun, Keiji-kun, Ryuju-kun...etc.

So, I was just wondering whether it's Shoma's character or it's Tomono-kun's (or even both) that he started calling Shoma without "-kun". By dropping it, it sounds (to me) like they're especially in good terms. (They are the same age by skating calendar, but Shoma is 1 yr senior by school calendar, and I believe Tomono-kun wasn't at Nobeyama camp when he was in novice.) I'd assume it's Tomono-kun's friendly character, but my assumption is often wrong :slink:

Thank you so much, Tsurara! Japanese language/culture is fascinating!

I know a bit about the honorifics because of anime/manga, but I had no idea the figure skating community had their own rules. I can imagine Kazuki wouldnt stop using the -kun if Shoma himself wasn't comfortable with it, right?
From what you said, it sounds like a good development in their relationship, so I'm happy!

It's not exactly rules, but just some weird traditions that Japanese male skaters have passed on for a while (My guess is it's going on since Nobeyama camp started, but I may be wrong. Otherwise, since there were not many boys before, they just started following how their coaches (or even their senpai girl skaters) called the other students at competitions and such?)
Btw, it's just a co-incidence, these articles just show that Tomono-kun is calling Shoma 'Shoma-kun' here (perhaps he started dropping 'kun' during PIW?), and they all call Daisuke Takahashi 'Dai-chan' lol

Well, technically Shoma(born Dec 1997) is just a few months older than Kazuki(born May 1998). Though I wonder if Shoma himself told Kazuki to dispense off with the formalities. Like Yuzuru said he told Shoma dont have to be so formal.

Yup, I thought about this, too. I think it's very likely IMO.

lol, Kirara, I think I may start the countdown till the moment you give in and start learning Japanese like others have. The Yuzuru thread did that to me one day, and you're not far behind I see. Just a few more Kazuki interviews... :p
hehe, ぜひ見てくださーい, 'zehi mite kudasai', 'make sure to check it out', is actually one of the first sentences I learnt in my classes when I got over the kinks of verb stems. Always a joy to me to see things I only know from books or from my teacher, put in actual use. Preferrably by skaters of course ^ ^

Btw don't tell me Kazuki intends to keep that strange flat hairstyle he had at PIW? I preferred him mop-topped. (lol, is that word even used anymore?)

Yeah, that's very possible. The difference is that Shoma used to talk to Hanyu-kun and Mao with no formalities as a little kid, and at some point Shoma started using keigo to them, like several years ago? as a mature? boy, or maybe because they became the real top skaters? That's when Hanyu-kun told him not to be so formal, I believe, but my memory is failing a bit. I remember reading articles (or maybe a tv show) about it and how they miss(ed) 'kid Shoma' informality. Now he uses semi-keigo(half keigo, half casual) or something along the line. So, yeah, maybe Shoma liked it and tried to do the same as Hanyu-kun, as you suggested, though in a different situation.

lol, Kirara, I think I may start the countdown till the moment you give in and start learning Japanese like others have.
