Kazuki Tomono

Congrats on the silver, Kazuki! Some nice pics from today: https://twitter.com/atom_doshisha/status/1332684700452732935
I know he's probably feeling 'kuyashi' at the moment, it was definitely not the skating he was hoping for, but hey, there's progress compared to regionals and sectionals!

Once again I remember the words from Hiraike-sensei: 'Kazuki is a step-by-step child. He's not someone who can improve at once, he needs time'.

I have no doubt that in time he will settle into his new FS layout nicely, from the practice reports we know he can handle it physically. It's just a matter of handling the extra mental pressure of doing 3 quads + backloaded 3As. But we know he will get there, he always does 💜

Kazuki once again OWNED the gala and performed a new version of 'Freaks': https://youtu.be/O640PaBsJxo (Spanish commentary, non-geoblocked)

There was also a very sweet and funny exchange with Daisuke Takahashi, kindly translated in this tweet thread: https://twitter.com/kokomadekokomo/status/1332964324650827776
Kazuki said “all male skaters have idolized Daisuke.”
Kazuki: “I still think I am young. I am always aiming for better.” Dai: “You are only 22, right? You ARE young.” Kazuki: “Sota and I used to copy Daisuke’s choreography to CyberSwan.” Dai: “Dang, I was young then. (Looking at VTR)
Kazuki: “I want to ask Daisuke about something that is missing in my skating. Hmm, how do you bring out sexiness?” Dai: “I have no idea! I’ve never thought I’m sexy. It will come to you naturally with age.” Kazuki: “I see. I guess it is not something you get by trying.”

Their interaction was soooo cute! That Twitter user said Daisuke said many words of encouragement to Kazuki, who I'm sure was over the moon 🥰

Congrats to Kazuki! Well-deserved medal for him. I haven't watched men's free or the gala yet, but I'll make sure to watch Kazuki. What a confidence boost this must be for him before Nationals! ✌️

Did you guys see Misha's tweet about Kazuki's ChSq: https://twitter.com/mishageofficial/status/1332904773129887745
Crazy to think Kazuki's doing a 'simplified' version!
Here's a chart showing Kazuki's GOE ChSq growth since the 2018-19 season: https://twitter.com/bigfanofskating/status/1333409621013237762
He 'won' the ChSq hands down at the NHK free, with a GOE of +2.10 🔥

Meanwhile, Kazuki's sponsors have congratulated him:

I'm a little late here but congrats to Kazuki on his well-deserved medal!
He looked different since Sectionals, sharper and more attacking in both programs. I think he matured just within a few months.
Can't wait to see him at Nationals!

Well done to Kazuki! By the way, what's next for him? Nationals, or was there an event in Osaka in the meantime?
AFAIK He is doing an ice show and skating experience in Osaka now in early December, as part of the Osaka Autumn Sports Challenge event. After that, yes, I think it's Nationals.

Totally agree! He's been growing so much with each competition 😍

What, it was not the Kokutai qualification thing I hope?
Anyway, I'll root for Kazuki to podium at Nats! and for Sota to survive...
Oh, no, he already did the Kokutai qualification tournament earlier this year! This was a fun event planned as part of the Osaka Autumn Challenge Festival, in which Kazuki is one of the supporting athletes. It's a postponement rather than cancellation so hopefully they will be able to do it eventually

As for Nats, I realised that Men's short will be at 3:30am on Christmas Day for me, and the Men's free on 8:00am the following morning!
I'm not sure if I'll be able to watch... :drama:

Kazuki's friend from Doshisha University Kosuke Hori won the silver medal at the rhythmic gymnastics Japanese championships: https://twitter.com/ouenMRG/status/1330103241573588993 I'm sure Kazuki's very proud!
Now I want to see Kazuki wearing something pink and extra like Hori's costume 😄

On a different note, Philip Mills-sensei has a new website, and the video of him working with Kazuki features on the homepage: https://www.phillipmillschoreographer.com
He also posted a note congratulating Kazuki for his silver medal at NHK: https://www.phillipmillschoreographer.com/post/and-the-silver-at-the-2020-nhk-trophy-goes-to
So sweet! 🥰

Oh yess I'm so happy Kazuki did his choreography justice! His NHK performance was so inspiring. Sensei must be proud:clap:
And I just discovered his Youtube channel ;P
His first upload: https://youtu.be/-uLd3tV3Lzs
It cracked me up when he said "when I started in FS choreography ... at that time Lori Nichol was maybe in high school, David Wilson was in middle school ...":rofl::rofl:

Lol that is funny 😂
I'm very happy that his collaboration with Kazuki features so prominently on his website - it's a great honour for Kazuki coming from a coach with such a long and distinguished career. I really want to see Mills-sensei choreographing again for Kazuki in the future!

On a different note, Figure Skating Charts account posted some very interesting charts about Kazuki's scores over the past couple of seasons: https://twitter.com/bigfanofskating/status/1338054698348150784

I found the 'GOE heat map' particularly interesting - we can see that Kazuki not only increased his jumps BV, but he also has improved the quality of his jumps, earning more positive GOE than before 🙌 That is simply amazing!

On the other hand, we can see that spins and levels are still an issue... 😬

Hi all!

I sent a PM out a few days ago regarding the Video Project. If you are interested in doing Kazuki (or anyone else), shoot me a PM! :)

What on earth does the pre-competition lucky charm line say? Something about writing and drinking... I cannot make heads or tails of it, lol.
It actually feels quite pleasant to have a good feeling about Kazuki's Nats at least :) He deserves to be in the top 6 again.

I think he pretends to draw the character for 'person' (?) on his hand 10 times and then pretends to swallow it from his hand. Now, why and how this ritual came about, I have no idea 😬

I think he was asked about it on his joint interview with Hiroaki Sato back in NHK 17: https://youtu.be/u5uRUGLjJqQ But it's in Japanese, I'm afraid...

I'm also hoping that Kazuki can finish in the Top 6 again at Nats 🙏

My Japanese listening comprehension is sadly deteriorating but I checked out the part during the interview when he mentions the ritual, he says that he draws the character for person(人) on his hand 10 times and pretends to swallow it before going on the ice, then jumps (successfully) 10 times. He started doing it when he was in juniors, 2-3 years before 2017 so around 2014-15. He first did it just because he was nervous, but it somehow became a habit. Suzuki Akiko then says that it feels like a pretty self-confident gesture, to which he replies what I can only hear as something like "I was thinking 'what should I do', so like what everyone was doing I just did what was often said of me."

I'm pretty sure I'm wildly off the mark on the last bit and my Japanese isn't really to be trusted, but hope it helps
