Kazuki Tomono | Page 31 | Golden Skate

Kazuki Tomono

It is actually sake (the alcoholic drink)! It was what he drank to celebrate his 20th birthday, the age of majority in Japan.

Ohh I'm glad I did ask... or else I would have thought it was a typo. I mean, look at him! I always forget he's already 20

Yes. He got Level 4 on all his spins and also his StSq, which doesn't usually happens. Also, his PCS were relatively good, especially considering the mistakes on his jumps. I really love how he never lets go of the performance, even when the jumps don't work out.

I'm sure he will learn from this and bounce back!

I'm so proud of him for pushing through despite the fall. Let's send him energy for the free, I'm sure he can pull back up! :ghug:

Ichigo-milk is a kind of cocktail, like Kahlua with milk. It's basically strawberry liqueur with milk.
Tuna-Mayo Onigiri (or rice balls) is what Tomono-kun once said he ate before every competition and brought him good luck or something, though he couldn't buy one when he's at international competitions. It's one of the most popular and very common type of onigiri that you can buy at every convenience store in Japan.

After the SP Kazuki said that he was quite tense since the warmup and despite that he is happy that his training for the spin and steps has paid off or else he would have a worse score

https://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20190208-00000086-dal-spo
The original article has two more pics here
And yeah, he said it was a "bad" kind of tense. He also mentioned something like he's made wasteful mistakes, as he had a pretty nice warm-up going (according to the article). But it's okay, like he said, "one by one".

I just watched his SP on tv here. Hopefully someone will upload his 3A data with Ice Scope later.
His jumps were err, but his movement looked great, I really liked it no matter the score!

Thanks Tsurara for the correct translation (relied on online translation in my post) and info , and here a kind soul have posted the Ice Scope data for Kazuki 3A along with other men from SP if you check the rest of the thread.

And I do agree that his movement looked so great. I was especially happy seeing that the first spin get a major makeover :agree: Also his expressions were great despite the falls he stayed connected with the music :luv17: Did you notice how some of the audience were emotional and in tears at the end of his program? (If my eyes aren't deceiving me )

Also, this is a great statistics about Kazuki during his previous 3 international competitions

Sounds like he's struggling a bit with his jumps at the public practice.
(Landed 4S+2T, but his second 4S wasn't clean landing, and he popped 3A to 1A at runthrough.)
He's wishing to get rid of any kind of fears to challenge himself in the FS.

(relied on online translation in my post)
Your translation is also correct! I just added that only because it sounded like Tomono-kun enjoyed/needed certain tense, but it wasn't what he wanted this time.
I didn't notice that article until you posted the yahoo URL, so please don't be discouraged by my post:pray:

so please don't be discouraged by my post:pray:

Not at all dear, I just wanted to clarify that I used online translators since I forgot to do so in my original post (I can't take credit for it) :o:. I don't know any Japanese so just have to rely on those which is not very helpful most of the time and so it is always a great relief and so helpful when you translate for us when you can and let us know what was really mentioned/said. Thanks again for all the efforts :luv17:

BTW, they aired a report about Kazuki today. Again showing his daily routine between training and university life. Always love seeing him with his friends and those childhood parts too. SO CUTE ^^

I hope someone uploads a better version soon

Thank you so much everyone for the translation and updates!
I love the fluff piece on him, it would be awesome to know what he says, especially at the end... He talks about his family, right?

I won't be able to watch him tonight, but I just hope he do 'a Kazuki' and bounces back strong in the FS!

Thank you kindly, AQFS! Not only to you but the same goes for everyone else too!

Quick translation (it probably contains errors and mistakes, and I'll fix them later if any) while I waited for my angel Satoko's SP at Bavarian Open (and now a few others) :o:
At first, I meant to do some short summary, and then I went "meh, I have enough time" and switched to a bit more detailed one.

“Seyanen”, meaning “Absolutely! (That’s right)” in Osaka dialect, is a Kansai local tv show with some comedians. The title of this segment is “Kazuki Tomono, from Kansai to the World!”

1
Starts with an introduction with his basic profile as one of the most remarkable (in growth/booming) skater of the new generation, with some emphasis that he’s from Sakai (Osaka) and a Doshisha univ student.

Tomono: I was born and brought up in Sakai. (smiles) So, yeah, I’m “Sakai’kko (Sakai native)”.

The show explains how he usually appears to be a normal 20 yrs old university student but once he puts on his skates, he has got the face of a top skater representing Japan.
At 7:30 AM in front of his home rink in Namba, Osaka.

2
Tomono: Whenever I don’t have class at first period, I always come here around this time for practice. Little kids start their practice as early as 6, so mine’s not that early, I think.

It explains how limited figure skating lessons are here because not many rinks are available for serious lessons, so they have to use the rink before their business hours. On this day too, Tomono practiced so hard for about an hour until he was about getting out of his breath.
At 9:15 am, ends practice
Once he got off the rink, he changed completely.. *a big yawn*

Tomono: Tired. Sleepy~!

At 11:00 am
But without any rests, he headed straight to the station to travel to Doshisha university in Kyoto and it takes an hour and a half by train from Namba, Osaka to KyoTanabe, Kyoto.
Tomono studies various sports-related subjects, including training methods, psychology, and even nutrition science too.

Tomono: Because it’s about sports which I really like, it’s quite fun for me and studying them doesn’t bother me that much. I have always been skating while going to school, so I find it valuable/important to spend time as a normal university student, not just as the skater, Kazuki Tomono. I really enjoy it as well.

On this day too, he went to the univ cafeteria with his friends for lunch.

Tomono: It’s “Seyanen” (probably explaining why a camera is with him)
Friend: “Seyanen”? OMG!
Tomono: No big deal.
Friend: Seriously?
Q: What’s your impression of Tomono-kun?
Friend: He’s really Osaka-ish.
Tomono: See? (I knew you'd say that)

3
Friend: (Osaka-ish because) he’s a bit hasty.
Tomono: Eh?
Friend: He eats so fast.
Tomono: That (eating fast) has nothing to do with it (being Osaka-ish), does it?
Friend: (But) you eat freaking fast.
(The friend is in Ice Hockey team, another one plays soccer)

Tomono says he enjoys talking to friends outside figure skating. What they often talk about is

Friend: Muscle-related topics, and NBA.
Tomono: I’m not really interested in that though.
Q: Then what sports do you like?
Tomono: Baseball. I really love Hanshin Tigers (Osaka’s pro team) since I was little.
Q: So, you go watch their games?
Tomono: They aren’t winning recently, so, no, I haven’t really been watching them much.

Off to the class
At 8:00 pm, after classes, he comes back to the rink in Namba. Now, after their business hours, he practices for 2 hours. Tomono started skating at age of 4. He enjoyed skating, child play for fun extended and he improved drastically. In 2017, his first challenge in his Senior year, he placed 4th in nationals (1. Shoma 2. Keiji 3. Mura) and lost the ticket to PyeongChang Olympic and Worlds. However, a big opportunity came his way. Yuzuru Hanyu’s injury and Takahito Mura’s withdrawal for the Worlds. As 2nd alt, Tomono was offered the ticket to the World.

Tomono: I had to grab it and bring a success. I kinda knew that my life as a skater in the future would be determined by this. I challenged it with a motivator to appeal to the world.

With luck on his side, he won 3rd place on free, 5th in total to step into the limelight.

4
Moreover, he won 3rd place in Russian round of the Grand Prix Series too. But, he says,

Tomono: Both the Canadian competition and the Russian one, I was with either Hanyu or Uno and two of them were just too amazing. They are really the world’s top skaters and I got keenly reminded of the level difference. People often say, when does the third man (for Japan’s top 3) appear? And I do want to take the third man’s position myself. (Eventually) not just the third, but want to be the first. I’m practicing with that much passion.

So, in order for Kazuki Tomono to win in Japan and in the world, what’s his weapon?

Tomono: This is actually the phrase Daisuke Takahashi gave me, but, "人を置いてけぼりにしない演技 /Performances that do not leave audience behind (or performances that audience don’t get lost)”. That’s my biggest weapon, I think. First and foremost, I’m enjoying myself skating, and I guess that power to convey my emotions to my audience is my forte.

At Medalist on Ice, Exhibition in 2016
Tomono says he wants to move his audience, to entertain them. One of his performances at an exhibition was like this. He first appeared as a police officer. As the music started, for some reason he took off his cap. On top of his head, he had something like ears!? Then the music gradually changed into..
“The Police Dog” (or "Doggy Cop", a well-known children’s song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzD59YsLqXA(Someone made its English version)
How enjoyable he performs, grabbing his audience’s hearts!

5
Tomono: Lately there are also people of my age who cheer and support me, but particularly, people of my mother’s age, like (may I call them) Osaka’s obachan(aunties)? (laugh) Those pretty ladies in Osaka. I want to gain them as my ally! (laugh)
(‘Osaka’s obachan’, a famous stereotype, is known as a group of very adorable and supportive aunties.)

Thanks alot Tsurara

Our baby is working really hard and he deserves a lot. Wishing him the best in today's FS

Here is a part of his run through during today's morning practice. He was going a bit easy there just marking his timing and doing the jumps. Maybe he is saving some energy for the real performance.

Seeing our sunshine boy crying is so hard and I guess I will remain sad for some time because of that :sad4:

I just hope this set back doesn't affect him and he comes back stronger.

Here is his thoughts from this article

https://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20190210-00000119-spnannex-spo

What I understood from online translators, he said that it is been a while since he had so many mistakes in his performance and that in the next competition he wants to show a winning performance.

Gambatte Kazuki

It's such a razer-edged sport and when the razor cuts, they bleed...

He will come bcak, I'm sure of it.

Aww, so sad for poor little Kazuki. I saw his performance today because fortunately, the Eurovision sports website works for me, and it was hard to see him cry. If I'm not mistaken, he called his performance 'disgraceful' in the linked article, but I'll wait for Tsurara's translation to be sure. But he fought so hard! I liked his skating despite the mistakes. Cheer up, Kazuki! Hopefully it only gets better from now on.

It was a busy day for me but I was lucky enough that Kazuki’s skating time landed right during my lunch break. I convinced my non-skating-fan coworker to watch the stream with me and even she was bummed for him. I’m pretty sure had I watch it alone I would’ve cried with the poor boy :’( He is usually such a sunshine which made it even sadder to see him disappointed.

Ps. Someone, please hug him tight :(

It was a rough skate but he fought for it for sure. Let's hope he regroups and comes back strong next season!

NGL, I'm devastated. :sad21:

I think a huge part of his consistency issues this season are due to him feeling he has a lot to prove, which leads to too much pressure and him being very harsh on himself.

There's a quote from Sandra Bezic when she was talking about Javi that really stuck with me. She said that a skater needs to learn how to put their demons away (and Javi learned how to do that). So that's what I think Kazuki needs, he needs to put these demons away and believe in himself so he can really skate his best.

Sandra also said a 20-year-old male skater is just 'a baby' so hopefully this will come with time and experience...

Agree with you Kirara, although I like how ambitious he is I think most of the pressure he is feeling is from his own expectations of himself.

I think this article mentions more of Kazuki's thoughts after the FS (not sure what he mentioned there though)

I am feeling a bit better seeing smiling Kazuki and hearing him laught while he have some fun time with Keji and Marin

Did Kazuki hang out with Marin before his performances too?! (I doubt it~)
And here I thought I was the jinx! Those two are trouble for each others focus~

Anyway~
I want to thank all of you for taking the time to share so much the information, updates and translations.
I've been so distracted lately that on this page alone I see a lot I wasn't aware of. I'm anxious to read from where I last left off and catch up.

The lovely KiraraChin has been an absolute doll keeping me up to date with everything that's been going on with this thread and I'm so grateful for her doing so.
I mentioned to her earlier that I was thinking of posting some thoughts bought on by Kazuki's 4CC performances to help me deal the flood of emotions and heartbreak I was currently feeling.

I've already tweeted this out in a really long thread but hope you all don't mind if I also post here.
I found this to be quite cathartic and encourage everyone who might be feeling a bit sad, confused or overwhelmed to share their feelings as well.

During my drive home from the Honda Center this morning, I unexpectedly felt overcome with emotion and suddenly started to cry (and continue to do so as I type this.)
This could partly be due to feeling down after the excitement of seeing my first competition live and tbh, all the stress that went into preparing for it.

In any case, I felt overwhelmed when thinking about Kazuki’s 4CC performances,
about the tears he was trying so hard to hold back in the Kiss n Cry after his FS,
about how disappointed he must’ve been but still tried to make us smile by faking a bite out of that pillow.

Going into this season, I knew his team was reworking his technique and that the consistency he had gradually developed over the last two seasons would likely suffer.
But I had really hoped he would shine at this event.
Not for me, but for him.
For his confidence.

My first thought was “I must be a jinx” and maybe he would have performed better if I hadn’t been in the arena.
But how could I not be there in person to watch and cheer for one of my favorite skaters when this competition was being held so close.

So I deeply apologize to Kazuki, his team, his Fed and all of his fans if I’m somehow responsible for jinxing his performances.
Still, I’m l glad I showed up, made signs for him, threw gifts on the ice and cheered for him with all my might.

Even after his rough FS, I kept screaming and shouting, making a complete spectacle of myself in front of the amused (annoyed?) American and Japanese fans around me,
and more importantly members of Team Japan including Yoshiko Kobayashi.
And I don’t regret it one bit.

I wanted everyone to know (especially Kazuki) that regardless of results, I know he’s trying his best and for this he deserves to be supported 100%.
After all, it’s easy to cheer for our favorites when they perform well but it’s more important to support them when they don’t.

To Kazuki,

I promise to be a better, less neglectful fan for you.

I promise to update the OP of your Fan Fest in GS which I started because I wanted others to realize just how special you were even before your Senior debut.

I promise to continue supporting you through all the challenges that come with being a top athlete.
Yes, you are a top athlete too.
You definitely ARE good enough.

Thank you for working so hard to improve and bringing joy to fans with your charismatic performances and sunny personality.

Though I’m currently heartbroken for him, as his fan, I must stay positive and strong because I need him to stay strong too.

Get your revenge at Universiade, Kazuki! I believe in you!
