Kazuki Tomono

Hi everyone, have been some time since I came and posted here (sorry about that) but I have been and still quite ill so don't have much energy in me :(

Thanks to you all for keeping the thread so active

And thanks a lot Tsurara for all the translations, as usual. I read Part 1 only till now and I couldn't stop laughing reading their conversation. I really love how they are remembering those difficult times now jokingly, they sure face new challenges now but looking over their hardships in the past which they overcame surely will help them to overcome any new challenge as well.

In other news, Kazuki has a new picture on his university's figure skating club page: http://dfsc.sakura.ne.jp/dfsc/club_buin.html
His hair is looking... interesting... in the pic. I wonder what AQFS will think of it

Haha, actually more than his hair there is a lot of other things that make it not a very good image of him but I am especially sad that we don't see him smiling in that photo.
Odd hair and no smiling face is not a very good combination, that is for sure

I was watching this video↓ earlier today where Wayne McGregor talked about Chroma.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zswDHita_c

That is really interesting and I like that freedom idea. I think this would be also a good idea for Kazuki program. And maybe they can add a trick to his costume to express him also being a prisoner or restricted at the begining then do some change to it to express him getting free or maybe show some color. OK now I am getting a bit wild

Welcome back, please take your time to recover fully, OK?

I also like this idea! As long as it's relatively subtle (not like Laurine Cavalier's 2017/2018 costume change programme ), and doesn't rely a lot on miming.

Some Kazuki updates!

First of all, he posted pictures of a GORGEOUS bowl of ramen the other day! https://www.instagram.com/p/ByUz4V5n4Uk/
I had never seen this type before, but it seems it has mussels, clams and pork? Just looking at it makes me hungry

Also, there's another interview coming up! He will be featured in the next Quadruple Axel magazine, due to be published on 17/06: https://twitter.com/Tomono_Infonet/status/1136578973008195584

Last but not least, the second part of this year's interview with Kazuki, Shu Nakamura and Taichi Honda was published!
http://doshisha-atom.net/web/result.php?no=2468
http://kanspo.univ.nikkansports.com/?p=40788
Once again, I tried to read it with Google Translate, but in vain... (Help, Tsurara!)
There is little making of video that's so cute: https://www.instagram.com/p/ByX3yk3gw0N/
And some more cute pics of the boys!

:luv17::luv17::luv17:

BTW, I found this tweet from someone saying they went to a concert of SUGITETSU, the composers of 'The Policeman's dog fate', which Kazuki skated as an EX that season 2016/2017. Apparently (please correct me if I'm wrong, Tsurara), they projected Kazuki's image on the screen and everyone laughed! I love that people still remember that EX fondly.
:2thumbs:

I wonder if that's true or if it's just what the girls made them think
Hue hue hue :dev3: Generally speaking, I can't deny that girls do have that tendency.
That said, I guess male skaters have more female friends than male friends just because of the number of skaters they encounter in their lives.
Perhaps Tomono-kun talks enough with them too to see or observe how they interact with each other, but only girls know the truth anyways

Hi everyone, have been some time since I came and posted here (sorry about that) but I have been and still quite ill so don't have much energy in me :(
Please get well soon! :cheer:
Let me just send you some aura from Japan:pray:, hopefully it'll reach you soon!

Glad to hear that! More are coming, so be prepared! :ghug:
(And I'm actually hoping to see Mr. McGregor's another comment after watching Tomono-kun's performance later too!)

I need 48 hrs a day!!!
I've been a little bit busy lately, so gimme some time!:coffee:
Btw, which do you want to read first? The latest interview and keep the continued old one from the last season for later? Or want me to finish the old one first?
All of them are must-read imo, so I'll try doing all the articles by Doshisha/KansaiUniv anyways, but I'd like to hear what you think should be the priority.

Those big clams are called Hamaguri, and apparently it has char siu(yes, pork), green onions, and that weird brown/yellow long piece looks like menma.

One more thing, I'm not sure if it's just a co-incidence or not, but I've seen some tweets about Korean skater's IG story with Shoma in South Korea, which some fans seem to believe Shoma was imitating Tomono-kun's trumpet blow from PIW. I can't tell, but quite possible. What do you think?

I can't believe I fell asleep and missed last night's figure skate TV...:hslap:
I guess you all have already seen Uni-san's tweet on the preview for the next month
https://twitter.com/bebesho17/status/1137036219727122432
Yup, apparently we get to see Tomono-kun getting choreographed in California!

In the meantime, College figure skating: Keio University's FS club account announced the entry for 4大学定期戦(4 Univ FS Annual Match) on June 15.
https://twitter.com/keiofigure/status/1137012818232791040
https://twitter.com/keiofigure/status/1137012034661277696
4 universities are Keio, Rikkyo, Kwansei Gakuin, and Doshisha, and this match has been held for decades. (This year, 54th.) It says Keio univ has got 4 consecutive wins as a group match, so far. It's a college skating match, so not many high level skaters and only 4 skaters entry for A Class men: 3 from Doshisha (including Tomono), and Junya Watanabe from Kwansei Gakuin. Not sure if Tomono-kun is actually participating in it this year too, but I think he will.
Here is a short blog page with lots of photos from last year (hosted by Doshisha).

Welcome, back Tsurara! Hope you managed to get some coffee :coffee:

If you don't mind, I think the best is finishing last year's interview first, then you translate this year's? Would that be OK?
IIRC Part 1 of this year's interview was quite generic (talking about the season and stuff), so you can just start on Part 2 once last year's interview is done? How does that sound? Once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this, we are incredibly indebted to you

Thanks for the info re: the ramen, it sounds so delicious! Kazuki's insta really makes me appreciate how many types of noodles are out there!
As for Shoma's gesture, maybe it was a way to say to his friend Kazuki: 'I wish you were here'. Us too, Shoma, us too...

Thanks, Tsurara! I've seen the FSTV promo on Twitter too, really looking forward to it! Hopefully the video will be available soon after the broadcast on 12 July

I had never heard of this university battle! Some really cute pics from last year, thank you! :luv17:
I wonder if Kazuki will participate, and which programmes he'll skate to! Since it seems last year he skated Zigeunerweisen.

Yup, I'm enjoying some real coffee now! :coffee:

Sure, I don't mind at all!
But just let me tell ya, the latest one is quite a goody too ;) The highlight is about their coaches for me! (Hamada, Raf, and Hiraike)
Oh and just in case you don't realize what "NG" meant,

The above video is a blooper (No Good version) but they decided to show it to us because :rofl2:
Tomono-kun probably needs his smartphone when he gets recorded, even in his native tongue!

Some university sports clubs with long history often have their own unique local matches to boost students' diverse interchanges. Keio and Rikkyo are located in Tokyo and it's probably a good opportunity for the students to have cross-cultural(you know, east vs west) exchanges.
"Kansai Free" is another local competition (but free skating only!) for student skaters in Kansai area.
Last year's 4-univ match was held in May, and he didn't have new programs yet maybe? and did his old programs. This year, he already has both programs ready(?) so he MIGHT premiere his new ones??? Can't wait to hear the news!!! (if he actually participates in it, that is!)

Figure Skating Danshi Special Session
Kinki Danshi's Daily Life ~Off-season~ Part 3
http://kanspo.univ.nikkansports.com/?p=24951

2/2 of Part 3

―(In Kansai) we have Kansai Free {refer to above post}, retirement match/ceremony, etc, and all get very excited.
T: Our priority is cheering (for teammates) rather than our own performances. Cheering for life. [laugh]

―And also your esteemed senpai's retirement.
T: It's sad.
H: I can't help but cry. I don't usually cry at all, but I can't help it when skaters retire. That's the only time I cry throughout a year.
T: I didn't think I would cry, but I cried a lot.
N: I don't cry.
All: [laugh]
H: You never cry. I've never seen you do.
T: I wonder if Taichi or Shu-kun would cry for me when I retire.
H: (Yoshino) Kohei-kun's retirement made me cry the most.
T: Shu-kun, maybe you haven't experienced sending off someone you're extremely close/involved with, yet?
N: But I do feel sad about the retirement of Kohei and others.
T: Did you see the one (retirement match/ceremony) the other day?
N: I did, but...
T: You mean like, (what's a big deal when) you'll see him soon anyways? [laugh]
All: [laugh]
H: It happens, like, you cry so hard for a retiring skater and you meet him the very next day.
T: Happens.
N: I even meet Ryoichi (Yuasa) at Koya {Knives Out, the game mentioned earlier} too. [laugh]
All: [laugh]

―So you all get along well, but (you'll compete against each other) as Hokkaido(N) versus Osaka(T&H) for Kokutai, and Kansai(N&T) versus Doshisha(T) for In-Colle.
H: I'm neutral. {He's with Shu for In-Colle and with Tomono for Kokutai.}
N: Rascal you, (winning) twice already.
H: I won 2 {In-Colle and Kokutai} in a row.
T: You're right. Awesome. That's awesome.
H: But I knew I'd have the chance (to win) for both Kokutai and In-Colle before the season started. Group victory. I was just trying not to drag my team down. I'm glad that we won both as a result. To be honest, I felt it paid off for me as I was pretty down after Nats.
N: Wait, remind me, what was the original question? [laugh]
T: About us taking different sides (to compete).
H: We're not answering to that. [laugh]
T: For Kokutai, Shu-kun is our enemy. Hokkaido was our rival.
N: I did pretty well this time around.
T: Shu-kun was fully confident.
H: And I was completely worn out. [laugh]
N: Weren't you in a pretty tough situation?
T: We two were in our (college) exam week.
H: We only had 2 weeks for In-Colle after Nats. Shu-kun and I using the same rink, we encouraged each other saying "Gambaro {Let's gambaru}" (for those 2 weeks) until In-Colle. Then, as soon as In-Colle was over, I stopped saying "Gambaro" to Shu-kun. [laugh]
All: [laugh]
N: Already enemies then. [laugh]
H: Like, suggesting to take rests instead.
N: Saying 'Good, good' when the other isn't in good form.
T: Of course, you're kidding, right? Anyways, you switched successfully.

―Was Doshisha aiming for the win?
T: Of course we were, absolutely.
H: It was so close.
N: Only one point difference.
T: We all did our best and it's over, but it's so frustrating to lose to a 2-men team.
H: It would have been different and easier (for Doshisha) if it was Meiji (univ) that had won.
T: Different and easier. But we can't get over it just like that when it's Kansai Univ that won. [laugh]
H: We wouldn't be able to win again, even if we competed with the same members like 10 more times.
N: We wouldn't.
H: Never again.
T: Doshisha hadn't been on the podium for a long time.
H: If it wasn't held right after Nats, the result would have been different. It was the end of the year {more time for students} and Shu-kun and I didn't do well at Nats, so we practiced like crazy.
T: I see.
H: We pushed ourselves to the edge.
N: We did. Since right after the new year came. For our back-to-back title.
T: Male skaters put too much energy into In-Colle.
All: [laugh]

―You said you're aiming for 3 consecutive wins.
H&N: Of course we are.

―How's (the prospect for) next year('s In-Colle) looking?
H: Of course we want to win. Most of the skaters who competed this year aren't retiring. Kansai, Doshisha, and Meiji. So mostly the same skaters are competing the next year('s In-Colle), and we're wishing for a miracle (to win) again.
T: I really wanna enter. I can probably do In-Colle, but Kokutai...
H: Maybe not Kokutai.
T: If they let me participate in 4CC... But I'll do it even if I fly back on the day of the competition.
All: [laugh]
N: Or else, who is participating if Kazuki isn't?
H: Mitsuki (Sumoto, Naniwa Junior/Senior High School Skating Club)...? But he's still a senior at high school this year {not qualified for their category}.
T: Wait! Nobody else then? We're doomed.
N: That means Osaka can't enter. We (Hokkaido) have a chance.
H: We (Osaka) can't, nope.
T: OMG, I seriously need to work it out.
H: If Kazuki can't enter, neither can I. {You need 2 skaters per prefecture to enter.}
T: Please, bring back Kohei-kun.
H: We should ask Kohei-kun to compete for one more year.
All: [laugh]
H: I'm considering this seriously.
N: Come back. [laugh]

Note: This year's In-Colle group results: Meiji won (61 pts), Doshisha 2nd (60 pts), and Kansai 3rd (56 pts).
https://www.jsfresults.com/non_resp...onal/2018-2019/fs_j/intercollegiate/index.htm
Individually, Shu won, Tomono 2nd and Honda 3rd.
Also, for Kokutai, Osaka couldn't enter for Seinen (senior men) as Tomono participated in 4CC, and Mitsuki entered for Shonen (junior men). Shu won, but Hokkaido placed 3rd (Kanagawa 1st, Okayama 2nd).

Thank you so much again!
This part of the interview is awesome as well. I laughed at Shu and Taichi supporting each other in the run-up to Incalle, and then becoming 'enemies' ahead of Kokutai

Also, Kazuki being so worried about not doing Kokutai! It's so cute, I remember him saying he wanted to continue doing small competitions so he could be with his friends. It's a shame that he couldn't be there for Kokutai, will Mitsuki be eligible next year? If yes, that could take some pressure off Kazuki

Yeah, I think Sumoto-kun will be eligible next year for Seinen, and will enter if Tomono-kun can't. I think Sota is also eligible, if he gets better enough and if he wants, but maybe he may represent Aichi instead, I don't really know how it works or how they are determined which prefecture to represent.
(Like, Taichi is originally from Kyoto, but he's long been under Osaka fed and represents Osaka in Kokutai. Shu is from Hokkaido, he's long been in Kansai univ club under Osaka fed but he represents Hokkaido. Koshiro is from Ehime, but has long been in Okayama with Yuto and Sena, no Kokutai for him and no other skaters from Ehime for him to enter Kokutai with. That said, both Sumoto-kun and Tomono-kun are from Osaka and live in Osaka, so they're Osaka.)

Thanks for the info about Mitsuki, Tsurara! It's nice he'll be eligible, that way it will be easier for Osaka to participate even if one of the skaters can't attend! :agree:

OMG Rusfed... :laugh2::palmf:

Did you guys see that Kazuki posted another delicious-looking ramen picture? https://www.instagram.com/p/ByeVG8mHEr6/
It looks massive and so delicious! I bet that pork was super tasty ;)

BTW, I saw this very sweet tweet from a fan who got talking to the person next to them at FaOI. Please correct me if I'm wrong Tsurara, but the person said they were a fan of Kazuki (and Koshiro), and the other replied: 'Oh, there are a lot of Tomono fans lately' https://twitter.com/main120312031/status/1137719067584880641

This one is from ラーメン荘(Ramen-sou), well-known Jiro-style ramen in Kansai area. I was actually surprised that you found it looking good...? It reminded me of a phrase; be careful of what you wish! Jiro-style ramen is quite different from normal ramen and it has a lot of fat and makes you really full. I myself am afraid that I wouldn't be able to finish a bowl unless I was starving or something and haven't got a courage to try it yet. :p
If you're curious, go search by "Ramen Jiro" and you'll find articles by Jirorians (Jiro fans) even in English. This place, Ramen-sou, is run by those who used to work at the original Ramen Jiro, I heard.

OMG Kazuki's trying to kills us. Death by ramen :laugh2:
https://www.instagram.com/p/ByjRMBUHtFA/
Does anyone know what type of ramen this is? It looks particularly delicious to me. The broth looks sooooo rich! Yum.
Now this one is from 龍旗信RIZE(Ryukishin-Rize), well-known for Salt-based soup ramen (塩ラーメン/Shio-ramen)
The original "Ryukishin" or its HQ? is in Sakai, Tomono-kun's home town, but this photo is from one of its branch shops, "Ryukishin-Rize" in Namba.
http://www.ryukishin.com/
I've never been to these ramen shops, so be warned that this is only my guess, but I think his photo shows the one called "鶏炊いたん塩そば/Tori-taitan-Shio-soba (chicken-stewed-salt-noodle)", another very unique salt-based soup but ultra-thick chicken broth, or its variety. (According to their site, they're proud of serving salt-based soup, and even though it looks like Tonkotsu (Pork-bone broth), I don't think they serve any Tonkotsu there.)
Their site says they have a branch in London.

(According to their site, they're proud of serving salt-based soup, and even though it looks like Tonkotsu (Pork-bone broth), I don't think they serve any Tonkotsu there.)
Their site says they have a branch in London.

OMG So they do have a branch in London! I will definitely check it out! I don't think I've ever had ramen with a very thick broth like that, looks so delicious! :luv17:

Thank you so so much for your ramen expertise, Tsurara! :luv17:

On a different note, check out this cute pic of Kazuki, Marin and Mako: https://twitter.com/KiraraChin/status/1137811290469126146
I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's from the PIW backstage.

your ramen expertise
:scard7: no expertise, unfortunately...

1) I actually googled more on it this evening, and what I understood their branch in London seemed more like a collaboration shop called "Ittenbari x Ryukishin" (in Soho) and all the reviews I could find on internet were only from 2012 to 2016, and none of them have the thick soup ones. And it looks to be currently closed...? not sure. You may have a better luck in their branch shops in Paris or Milan. (The one in Paris seems to be still new, opened last year.) Or, you find out and tell me  (Or more like, you should find out before Tomono-kun takes part in a competition in UK and get prepared yourself so you could introduce the best ramen shop in London to him in near future!)

2) Here is a photo that looks almost the same as what Tomono-kun posted, and its name is indeed "Tori taitan"
https://www.instagram.com/p/Bh77kIIHFBv/
But, for some reason, it has "tonkotsu" tag together with it, so they may use pork bones too...? I had always thought they only used chicken paitan(or báitāng in Chinese) along with mussels, sea food and veges, but I guess I was wrong. Another branch of theirs apparently sells Tonkotsu and Shio-Tonkotsu too. Meh. Wish I were in Osaka and could try all those kinds and be a real expert.

well  enough with ramen for now.

I'm working on Part 4 translation tonight, I hope I can post it tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up, Tsurara! It's true, the London restaurant closed :( Damn, I was looking forward to trying it. Just as well I'm going to Paris on a family holiday at the end of the month. Now I just need to convince them we need to go there

The 'tori tartan' ramen looks absolutely amazing! I'm intrigued by the chicken broth you described but also love tonkotsu!

I feel we're all becoming ramen experts because of Kazuki!

Yay, thank you so much! :luv17:

I'm sure they have different names for each dish in their French branch, but a right photo will get you what you want, hopefully! I just hope your family don't mind dropping by there and you can report us what it's like later! They also have vegan ramen too but looks a tad expensive to me. (If you actually make it, don't forget to tag it with 'Cheering for Tomono-senshu by eating ramen' tag!)

PHOTO: What is that pose...?

ーWhat do you want to try for a challenge in the next season?
N: Umm... Well, I couldn't attempt any quads (in competition) during this season. So, first, I want to have one in a program for competitions. I want to give it a go in the next season, hopefully from the first competition onwards.

ーAccording to Honda-san, you're very close to landing it (a quad).
N: I feel like I'm already landing it. [laugh]
H: Yeah, you're landing it (as I saw it). [laugh]
N: I'm almost there. I just need... what is it, some kind of a spark for it, and I can make it just fine, I think.
T: My jumps have been stable so far and gave me good scores, so I want to focus on raising the basic levels of the foundation part for PCS (Program Components), including expressions, skating, as well as spins. And quads. I want to acquire different kinds of quads, to be competitive on the world's top stage.

ーSo, toe-loop for the next...?
T: Toe-loop, maybe. Well, (will try it) while having fun. Toe-loop is the most likely one, but I want to attempt other jumps too, while having fun.
H: Since I'm switching my environment in April, I need to raise overall levels. But my first priority out of all is to do a successful 4T in competition. And I'm willing to actively attempt another quad if possible.

ーBy another quad (you mean which)...?
H: I've already started trying Salchow lately. I occasionally tried it before too, but I'm feeling better with it now, and I want to try hard to work on it to catch up with other skaters.

PHOTO: Asked about the next season, their expression turned serious at once.

ーAny music genre you want to use for the next season's programs?
N: None, because I'm leaving it all up to my choreographers and coaches. I think what they suggest are what suits me, so... It's about my taste in the end, but I'll just say yes if I find it (what's suggested by them) fine.

ーYou're changing your free program this year...?
N: I'm changing my Free.
H: You used it (the last free program) for 2 years?
N: I did for 2 years.
H: Well, it's being cut to 4 mins...
T: You have to change it anyways.

ーWhat is your opinion about Free program being shortened to 4 minutes?
N: I wonder what it will be like...
T: Tougher?
N: Only one jump less.
H: I bet it'll be definitely tough. It's hard to recover.
T: You'll have to cram all in. With one less jump...
H: Each jump carries more weight.
T: Besides, the range of GOE gets expanded too.
N: But it's not settled yet, is it?
T: Right, but I guess the time is coming that demands the high quality of each big guns, well, probably not just jumps, but the qualities of each and every element.

PHOTO: The three looking into their phones for some reason...

ーWe've derailed a bit. (Back on topic,) any genres that you want to try in the next season, if you have any.
T: I'm the same with Shu-kun, I do suggest some myself too but most of the time they decide mine. This season's West Side (Story) and Zigeunerweisen, both of them too were brought by the choreo's sensei and my coach Taijin Hiraike sensei. What I really want to use the most is jazz.

ーAhh! That sounds fitting...
T: I do want to use some 'oshare' {fashionable, mode, fancy...} music. And also, something very deep and somber one, like people would give an unexpected cry of "Wait, that one?", to the contrary. [laugh] I do want to use such a piece, but I'm afraid maybe I'm not up to it yet technically. So, that leaves me to say, I want to use a number that is effective to show the best in me for sure.
H: I haven't decided yet, but I'm planning to change both Short and Free. I want to have new programs that are not something I've done before, but basically I leave them up to the choreographers, and then I'll talk with them, giving my ideas/opinions (to decide).

ーYou haven't chosen music yet, right?
H: The (ISU) rules aren't settled yet in the first place.
T: We can't decide even if we want to. Even if you do decide, you can't do the choreo yet.
H: Especially this new season, (we don't know) to what degree the rules change. Well, there are rumors, but nothing set in stone yet, and it's hard. I hear that it's almost settled that Men's Free will be cut into 4 mins.
T: It is (settled). I saw it. For now, we just need to keep in touch with choreographers.
N: For now, really, just practicing elements and such.
※ The interview session took place in early April (in 2018).

【Editorial postscript】
This project started in December, last year. It all started in the media waiting room at All Japan National Figure Skating Championships. We have seen the three being very close in block competitions and student competitions, and that triggered the two of us in charge of this project, who knew each other well in person, and started elaborating a plan together, thinking "It will be very interesting if we can do it!" The actual interview session took place in early April, and the first release was on May 7th; it became the biggest project for the longest period that the two had never experienced before. Thank you very much to all of you who read "Kinki Danshi's Daily Life ~Off-Season~". There is nothing that makes us happier if we get to deliver their actual profiles both as 3 male skaters from Kinki area and also as those who live "nichijou (mundane everyday life {unlike fancy and unrealistic lives of celebrities})", to as many of you as possible, through this project. By the way, notice that the title says "Off-Season". Perhaps we'll have a continuation of the project after the season starts...? We don't know that yet, but as student journalists, we are hoping to be able to witness the season filled with their smiles.

So interesting to know that Kazuki wants to do jazz! That's probably not a very easy type of music to skate!

BTW, Kazuki announced he WD from the skating competition tomorrow :(

I'm trying to to read too much into it. Hopefully this is just him and his team being extra cautious...
I know he loves small competitions, but there's no reason to push it in the off-season, right?
