Kazuki Tomono

Well done to Kazuki! Well earned. He's an impressive fighter in the major events, which is a rare gift! He's been improving at Nationals year by year, and now he was rightly rewarded for his efforts.
I hope I can find a video of his programs somewhere. Either noone has uploaded, or the copyright watchdog is being a major pain in the backside, and faster than usual.

 :ghug: Kazuki!
Now there's absolutely no thought wasted on retiring anytime soon I hope.

He conducted himself and his nerves onto the podium and as he uses Strauss I just count him into "Team Europe" together with the two "Swiss boys" 🤣
So Europe took over Japan. What a day :dbana:

I had to leave during Sena's FS but managed to record the rest including the ceremony and lots of backstage fluff were Kazuki also appears.
Anyone interested, PM me and I'll send you the link.

This guy clearly doesn't know what he's talking about and he is projecting his own agenda as if it were facts 😒

BTW, sorry everyone I've been m.i.a., trying to process everything... As a long-time Kazuki fan, this is so weird. Like, what do you mean, Worlds is coming up and we know Kazuki will be there? No speculation or anxiety, or sadness because his season will finish early. It's a really exhilarating but also surreal feeling. Sorry if I'm not making any sense 😅

Let me tell you what I'm most proud of. Kazuki is clearly having some sort of mental block with his quads - unfortunate, but it happens, especially in circumstances where he's feeling anxious for some reason. He spoke about financial anxiety, and we know historically the beginning of each quad is a bit rough for him, as he has to adjust to a new set of expectations, new players in the field, etc.

Now, what used to happen before is that in addition to inconsistency with quads, he used to leave points on the table due to silly mistakes - botched spins, low-level steps, falls or pops on the axel and/or some of the other triples. While still not perfect, I noticed that this season the number of 'silly mistakes' has been greatly reduced, and that together with him FINALLY getting the PCS he deserves, has meant that he's been able to keep himself afloat and still get reasonably good scores.

That is incredible progress compared to the past. While I'm sure the scores this season are still not what he would hope for, it also means he has become a more polished skater who could get some great scores once the finally nails the quads. I know it will come, and I can't wait.

The undignified hissy fits are completely unnecessary and rather crass; Kazuki and Sota earned their places by their skating through this season, and I hope they can ignore the people who would deny them this and go forward for a great result at Worlds.

As a Shun Sato fan, I thing he's highly deserving and I'd have been very sad if not upset if he hadn't had a big championship to look forward. But he does. He'll have Four Continents Championship. Japanese Men's field is extremely deep at this (high) level, and these are two skaters with extremely different strong points and weak points, who have much progressed in the two last seasons. I wasn't surprised at all that Japanese federation chose Kazuki Tomono for Worlds and Shun Sato for 4CC. I wouldn't pretend it's by far, I think indeed it's very narrow, but it's still logical. I hope and I do believe that Shun Sato himself, while having rather targeted Worlds, thinks that between him and Kazuki the battle was fair and Kazuki won by a small margin. I'm sure he wants to reverse the result for next year, of course.
I would also like to contradict the assertion that Kazuki Tomono won't be there at next Olympics, because he said himself that this was his target (I understand that he's unlikely to skate competitively after 2026), because he's a late bloomer and has still much to give and to show, and even a skater who's unlikely to be there at next Olympics can go to Worlds, it's only during pre-Olympic year that this factor has to be taken in consideration.
I think that nobody knows how all these excellent skaters will evolve in the years to come, but at this point, and while generally critical of Japanese federation's decisions, I believe that they chose logically here.
What I believe is that these comments by Shoma Uno, probably spoken without much weighing things, may increase pressure on both Sota Yamamoto and Kazuki Tomono at next Worlds, as if the number of World-class Senior Men wasn't already a pressure high enough to maintain Japan's three spots.
