Kazuki Tomono

This might be a bit outlandish but I want Kazuki to skate to Kenshi Yonezu
I didn't know this artist but listening to the songs you linked, I agree, it'd be super interesting to see Kazuki skating to them! I think probably as an EX in which he can freely express himself without worrying about quads and levels

A couple of fan cams from 4CC :love2:

Post-event interview (paid article): 'Kazuki Tomono to continue competing next season: "I want to perform in front of everyone while I'm still able to move"': https://mainichi.jp/articles/20260127/k00/00m/050/134000c

And exactly what do you mean by "skated" to it? You can praise Kazuki without underhanded b*tchery at another skater, you know.

?????

I just literally meant what I wrote, that Yuzu "skated" to it in the Bow & Arrow music video - so if I were Kazuki I wouldn't want to skate to it as well. I put quotation mark on "skated" cause Yuzu skated to it only in the music video, not as a competition program.

I wasn't swiping at Yuzu at all, if anything it's the opposite. Yuzu is the GOAT so as good as Kazuki is, he probably wants to avoid any unnecessary comparison. Chill :)

But of course, if Kazuki wants to skate to Bow & Arrow, it's his choice and I will support that, I'm sure he can bring something different to the table

Soooooo word on the street is that Kazuki said he'll keep his SP and have a new 'fun' FS for next season. Sadly it's in an article behind paywall, but repeating his SP would be a smart choice, it's such a good programme! Also, next year's FS will be under new rules so that'll take some getting used to.

In other news, check out this 'Don't fall in love' fan cam... who needs jumps when you can have absolutely gorgeous, glorious skating?

and we got to see a glimpse of the Japanese boys at the banquet + Sumitada's TOMONO curry!

Oh, great news, looking forward to Kazuki's programs! I love the SP so I'm happy to hear it's coming back ❤️ Also, my hope of seeing Kazuki dancin' and singin' in the rain 🎶 isn't dead yet... surely it could qualify as 'fun'? 📿

That looks like a very large serving of Tomono curry! I want to see Kazuki's curry sold at competitions, BTW! I'm pretty sure he'd make a nice sum if he sold it at the Finlandia, Nepela and Challenge Cup arenas where he'd trump the stalls' offers single-handedly! (lovers of stuff like minced meat hotdogs will forgive me, I hope)

Just read something really cool: At 27 years and 8 months old, Kazuki is now the oldest Japanese man to land a quad in a ISU competition! The record was previously held by Daisuke Takahashi, at 27 years and 7 months old. Since Kazuki is most likely getting 2 GP assignments next season, it's possible that he'll carry on breaking longevity records for Japanese men in ISU competitions

Meanwhile, Yuna Aoki posted a really cute update on IG, including these pics:

Kazuki also said during 4CC that, just after Japanese Nationals, there were days in which he struggled in motivation, so he watched Yuna's performances at Nationals to cheer up! Game recognises game 😊

Fantastic article on Elle Japan about Kazuki, Yuna Aoki and Sota Yamamoto. Here's the machine translation of Kazuki's part, the bold is also from the original article: https://www.elle.com/jp/culture/movie-tv/a70171420/numachu-favorite-figure-skater-26-01/

Kazuki Tomono has staked everything on Halston.

And then there is Kazuki Tomono, Yamamoto's close friend and another veteran skater who fought alongside him throughout their careers.

However, whereas Aoki and Yamamoto had made a name for themselves from a young age, Tomono was by no means a skater who could be described as a prodigy. Indeed, he was a rather ordinary skater who awoke to unexpected opportunity and began competing against the geniuses. In a sense, I believe Kazuki Tomono has lived a life akin to that of a shōnen manga protagonist. Precisely for this reason, audiences inevitably find themselves empathising with Kazuki Tomono as a person.

Japan's men's team boasts a host of star skaters, yet Tomono stands apart in terms of popularity. When his signature choreographic sequences begin, everyone forget they are watching a competition and cheer as if at a show. West Side Story, Riverdance, La La Land, Happy Jazz, Die Fledeurmaus. Just hearing the titles conjures images of his legendary performances. Though he may not have seemed a natural genius, Tomono was a genius at capturing the hearts of his audience.

This season's free skate programme 'Halston' drew mixed reactions from some quarters, precisely because fans who know Tomono's showmanship well were watching with a discerning eye. The relatively unchanging, tranquil melody made it difficult to showcase Tomono's signature strength – his outstanding sense of rhythm. Particularly when jumps were botched, it inevitably left a strong negative impression. It is what one might call a programme where 'the music doesn't help'.

Song selection is a crucial factor that can determine victory or defeat. There were voices wondering whether a brighter piece might be preferable, driven by the desire to see Kazuki Tomono take to the Olympic stage. Yet Tomono remained unwavering. Precisely because it was the vital Olympic season, he chose to compete with 'Halston'. That's how deeply he cherished this programme.

Halston was first unveiled during the 2023-2024 season. Amongst its performances that year, the All Japan Championships stands out as a rare masterpiece in recent memory, still vividly recalled by many figure skating enthusiasts. Despite a single slight flaw in landing, he successfully executed all seven jumps, achieving a high score of 184.64 points. His dazed expression after the finish spoke volumes – it was a performance where he was quite literally in the zone.

It was precisely because they knew Tomono that the fans supported his choice. They believed that only Tomono could venture into the artistic realms unreachable by straightforward, simplistic programmes.

Then came the Four Continents Championships. He advanced to the free skate in second place, just 1.4 points behind leader Miura, with his first title within sight. Unfortunately, he did not deliver a flawless performance, with some jump landings being slightly off. Yet Tomono firmly commanded the weighty piano tones.

What he was attempting in 'Halston', I believe, was to play the spaces between the notes. Precisely because this piece uses so few notes, he expressed the resonance of each individual key's sound through gliding movements. During the step sequence in the middle section, he carved out edgework in time with the piano notes, while subtly capturing even the lingering resonance with the slightest movements of his neck and gaze. This is a performance only possible for Tomono, possessing such exceptional musical sensibility.

There is a genre of theatre known as silent drama, which dispenses entirely with dialogue. Tomono's Halston evoked something like this. How to create something from nothing. Precisely because sound is sparse, the audience strains their eyes and ears to discern meaning. In this era of overindulgence where only the easily comprehensible is celebrated, to produce a work demanding such sustained imagination within the competitive world – this, I believe, can rightly be called a remarkable achievement.

Skate America, where he had his first chance to win a Grand Prix Series event. The All-Japan Championships, where he staked his Olympic dream. And now the Four Continents Championships. Looking back, Tomono's season often ended just short of the mark. Yet I believe he has no regrets. Because he believed in the path he chose and saw it through. His smile as he left the ice, bittersweet yet radiant, seemed to me more proud than ever before.

Does this stage count for the team/Prefecture's final result?
Yes it does! Shuntaro Asaga (the other Osaka skater) didn't do too badly, he's currently in 6th and made the final group in the free skate.

I think it's fair to say Osaka is most likely not winning the competition, since Aichi has a super strong team with Sota and Shunsuke Nakamura, and they both did well in the SP.

Let's hope Kazuki and Osaka can hang onto the silver!

Good luck in the free, Kazuki! I'm glad I caught his program live. The 3A was the only successful jump element, but it was massive and looked great. Kazuki did look tired to me, and no wonder, it's really soon after 4CC. But he didn't hold back on the presentation, and seemed to thoroughly enjoy competing in Aomori. If the stream archive is released, we can listen in a bit to his KnC dialogue with his coach and teammates as the sound in this stream was nice and strong.

Good job, Kazuki! He has individual silver, and Team Osaka also has silver. I had the impression he was just too tired after 4CC, and couldn't hold on to his quads for that reason. Still, he landed both of his axels, and performed all lv4 spins and StSq. Really solid achievement, considering how much he has to incorporate in his program at his age to stay competitive with the top 3! (y)

I don't think JSF are planning any more competitions for him, but he has to practice diligently anyway as he's the first alternate for OG and WC.

I really like how the static camera showcases his speed and the beauty of his steps even more :love2:

Press report: Kazuki Tomono delivered a compelling performance, immersing himself fully: "I was constantly spurring myself on, focusing on how much I could match Kōta's intensity."

Kazuki did the Osaka man glico running man pose at the medal ceremony:

I'm glad that he and Sota managed to finish the season together, and having fun:

This channel has both of Kazuki's performances:
SP

FS

Thanks for the victory ceremony pose clarification, Kirara! I had no idea what that was supposed to be. What's next for Kazuki? A show, or being at the ready for potential OG/WC sub request?

Hopefully a bit of a rest! He said that, although he genuinely hopes everybody remains healthy and gets to go, he wants to be prepared for Worlds as first alternate. I guess he's a bit traumatised from 2022, when he was called in last minute and let a medal slip for lack of preparation. So I'd expect him to focus on trainin for the moment, and maybe do a last-minute appearance in Kassoya if he's not called as a sub.

Meanwhile, some more cute pics from National Winter Sports Festival:

Kazuki didn't make to the Olympics but we're still drowning in press coverage 🙀

First of all, the Quadruple Axel calendar look AMAZING, and you can customise both the pictures and the size! The bad news is that it really looks like it's for Japan only 😭

In other news, an article about Kazuki was published on Number sports magazine: https://number.bunshun.jp/articles/-/869181
It's a really nice one about his feelings after Nationals and his decision to continue competing.

Some other updates from yesterday:

Last but not least, it was announced today that Kazuki will be a special instructor at a class for primary school children on 22 Feb: https://x.com/UMEDAtsurun2/status/2018853839143903493

He's really booked and busy!

Daiichi Juken posted these Kazuki calendar samples... I'm still mourning the lack of international shipping 😭

and it seems there's a really cool interview with Kazuki and Sota in this month's World Figure Skating magazine 😍

A fan posted this SOI TV ad, and it also features Kazuki's class on the 22nd! It seems it's all connected. Incidentally, it seems that the Kassouya cast/poster is now finalised and it doesn't include Kazuki... As expected, it's not possible when he's the first alternate for Worlds, but I still think he might make a surprise appearance.

OT But this thread now hit 6,000 posts 🙀 Sorry for yapping so much about Kazuki haha But I'm grateful I'm not the only one here. Shoutout to my fellow contributors @surimi @kwanette @DizzyFrenchie and others who make this thread so active and heartwarming :ghug:
