Does anyone on the board know anything about restaurant management? I'm looking into a possible career change. I've been people managing for a while, but I'm dying to get out of financial services and the admin business. I've been toying with the idea of restaurant or retail management, and wondered if anyone would have insight into this type of work.

Run screaming.

Okay, I'm kidding. But it's a MASSIVE time investment. Even if you get into a franchise, you're talking probably seventy+ hours per week at the start. If you start a non-franchise place figure even more. Plus it's a huge financial investmetn. Restaurants are tons of work and lots of micromanaging.

Are you ready to give five years of your life just to get your business established? That's what they used to say was the average time - working night and day - to get a business off the ground. I am sure the restaurant business can be a lot of pressure. What kind of restaurant do you want? Some people invest in a franchise - like Tim Horton's because of the name and reputation. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the info. I don't plan to start with my own business. I'd like to test the waters first, before making that kind of commitment. Long hours don't bother me at all, as long as I really like what I do.
