Kostner to attend Mishin's camp

I sort of wish she would just rest on her laurels. Figure skating has changed somewhat since she competed. It kind of reminds me of when the pros were allowed to come back and skate at the Olympics and kind of bombed. Katarina comes to mind. Caro wasn't always the most consistent skater, is getting older, and the young'uns are coming on strong. I wish her luck.

She may not be skating for the medals and being from Italy, she has the opportunity to continue for whatever her heart wants. She may just move us with her courage and artistry.

I think we all know that Carolina is capable of doing a very nice triple-triple combo. She only choose not to do a triple-triple in the FS in Sochi. And yes, she repeated the easiest triples in the FS, so there is room for improvement there. Stamina is an issue of course. Skating clean in Sochi was key and I think she wanted too much in Saitama. But she was still at the top of her game, we shouldn't forget that. Just watch the SP.

While Mao and Julia used Saitama as a "revenge" to Sochi, and for Mao it was home, Carolina decided to go to Saitama at the very last moment, and she hadn't "the head" on the competition any more. When she was back in Italy from Sochi, she attended TV shows and interviews and other manifestations (she was invited to open Venice Carnival, " flying" from the top of S.Marco Bell Tower to S. Marco Square...Of course she "bombed" Saitama arriving third!
If she trained with Mishin, she can test their jumps, and Liza test her ability to skate: one re-learns how to jump triples (though recently she effortlessy landed a beautiful Loop and Salchow and a double Axel) and the other one (which I like a lot) how to slide better and perform more intensely
Because you can ALWAYS fail a jump ( see Hanyu at Worlds), but you don't forget how to skate to
music ( see Chan).
Mao was badly treated by the judges, but Mao was more a challenge to the other skaters than Carolina might be. Let we see.

She barely made it through the jumps in Sochi then completely BOMBED in Saitama. Like Mao, judges won't give her a rightful lead in PCS anymore. At least Mao still has more than the potential difficulty to win (and we saw how her season went, aside from injury and illness). Carolina can't keep up with not even doing a triple-triple...

Mao failed on most of her 3A attempts and had at least three "<" signs on the score sheet along with other mistakes this season. Of course they didn't give her the lead in PCS based on that. If Mao and Carolina will overcome their issues (underrotations for Mao, stamina for Caro), their PCS will hopefully rise above Medvedeva as it should be.

With how the scoring system is set up she can be somewhat competitive with only a 3T-3T and 2A-3T and the right jump layouts.

Perhaps now Carolina is "mind-free". She has won what she wanted, and can do what she wants.

Carolina is a great skater, but I didn't like that she often got gifted in PCS when she didn't skate well. 2014 Worlds LP is one example. I can see how a skater can still get the highest PCS with one or two errors, but she had several major mistakes in that program yet still got the highest PCS with some 9s in PE and a few 10s for CH. I do wonder if judges will change the trend as they did with Patrick now that the field has gotten more competitive and new favorites have emerged.

You know, I hope Carolina is coming back for the joy of skating because I can't see her winning a medal or even finishing in the top 5 with the strength of the current Ladies field. She is certainly fast and when I saw her it was before her Olympic success which may help her with the judges. However, she was not, IMO, a very good performer and her PCS were out of control.

It was like watching a skating video even though I was sitting there watching her as she had no connection with the audience. I'm sure she has improved greatly since she's been touring during her time off. But, I can't see her beating any of the ladies in the final flight.

Does anyone know if Mr. Michael Huth is still her coach?
I hope so.

As much as I admire Carolina for her skating and achievements I think she was gifted medals by the judges.
2014 Bronze medal is one of the best examples.

I just learned from her Wikipedia page that she did not miss European Championships podium even once between 2006 - 2014 (!) with 5 gold medals along the way.

This is the program I saw Carolina perform but it was not at Worlds. She is SO much better here at Worlds in 2004. BTW.......If someone were to bring "Song from A Secret Garden" back, I would not complain as it's one gorgeous piece of music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuwrdXlFVRc

None of the top ladies currently are significantly lacking in skating skills, and modern skaters (both male and female) are expected to load up their programs with transitions if they hope to compete for top marks, which makes getting high PCS and landing all the jumps doubly difficult. Judges don't appreciate going light on transitions these days. Going to be super hard for Carolina.

I'm with AlexRus here. I'm a little bit curious to see how this comeback goes. The judges have pretty much moved away from the old trend of rewarding PCS to veterans regardless of their on ice technical performance and are instead geared more toward rewarding consistency and a high level of difficulty. I don't expect to see the judges reversing those trends so she's going to have to be better now than ever before. I've learned though the more I doubt someone the more likely they are to surprise me.

I sort of don't agree because look at the marks for Wagner and Gold - it would appear the Americans are being held up constantly by pcs though Ashley did skate well finally at worlds. Look at Gold even with errors she gets amazing pcs.

Alexey Mishin: 'Carolina will take part in our group's training camp. She'll come to Estonia, Tartu. It starts from 18th of May to 29th of May. And then we'll see what's next.'

I think one might be very sceptical about that project. She was lucky enough to get her world title against a weak field (nothing to argue about that per se, a title is a title, and if the others aren't able to show up with better programs, it's their fault) and with the Olympic Bronze the got the maximum given her story of technical problems and inconsistencies over years. Even in Sochi there were some wobbles - the triple loop, the first jump of her second combination, the end of the third combination (Kim only had one not so ideal jump (her second lutz)). The pirouettes are not high quality (and Mishin is not exactly the right one to fix that, if it CAN be fixed - I doubt that: with 30 one is not going to be a new Lipnitskaya or at least Pogorilaya, who made noticeable progress that year), Kim also lost points in that area.
And the PCS boost, like others mentioned here, will not be significant (see Asada). PCS follows technical difficulty, first and foremost Medvedeva this year. And as things are - there easily will be some brilliant jumpers around, who "outjump" Kostner not only by a narrow margin.
