Ladies - Free Program

On the other hand, I am not so convinced that a skater deserves a +GOE just for doing the element the way it is supposed to be done. That's what the 6.0 base value is for.

To get the base value, the jump just has to take off the correct edge, rotate within 90 degrees of the correct number of times in the air, and land backward on one foot.

To get +1, three out of the approach, takeoff, air position/rotation, and landing need to be "good."

So it's possible to get the base value for jumps in which all or most of the phases are merely adequate. Or that have small flaws that are offset by good qualities in other phases. E.g., maybe the approach is a bit slow and the landing almost comes to a standstill, but the takeoff and landing edges and takeoff technique are correct and the jump is high and fully rotated.

It's even possible to get +1 if there's a small flaw in one phase if the other three are better than just good, though that's less likely. Something like 30 degrees underrotation or a less than perfectly straight, tight air position or less than well stretched landing position might qualify.

Mirai is not Japanese. She is proudly representing United States of America just like any other Japanese-American would do!!! I am japanese-american and I love this country and I am sooooooo proud of being AMERICAN!!!! As far as I am concerned, this is the best country in the world!!!

Quadaxelangel:

You would certainly not enjoy the note I posted back on Saturday.

I found this video of Mirai. Apparently, her Japanese is a bit broken, so they have to use Japanese subtitles when she talks.

ISU just posted the videos of the ladies' short and long at jr worlds. My browser can't play them. Can any of you view them, and if so, can you please post the vids on youtube? Thank you so much! :)

Is there anyone that is from America that is 100% American besides the Native Americans? My family "Russian, French, Cherokee / American." That is ONE of the beauties of the USA. Blend. To bad the different nationalities that make up the population of America don't get along / connect better, and IMO a disappointment that there isn't even more of a blend then what is a majority of European.

That vid was a little eye opening, for if Mirai's NJapanese is considered a little broken, I speak "busted" Japanese.":p

Funny the translation they put on the video also (somewhat common) didn't say all that he was really saying about her. The announcer gave her a "toast / cheers" (Kanpai) and it said nothing of the sort in the subtitles????? What else are we losing in the subtitles???? Letters from Iwo Jima had done that a few times too. They must be hiding something:laugh: J/K!

Wow Moa has a big autograph! I gues it is tights over skates for Mirai for awhile

After watching the Jr. World performances, I think the U.S. ladies definitely were the class of the field. I think I prefer Mirai's skating to Caroline's- it has more of a lightness and a smoothness to it. Ashley Wagner is also a very good skater, with really nice smooth jumps and just another all-around promising skater. Quite possibly the U.S. senior podium next year could be very similar to the junior podium this year

I think Kimmie Meissner can hold her own against Caroline, Mirai and Ashley, and Rachael Flatt has the technical ante also. I'm not even sure Emily Hughes will compete next season, with all her talk about Harvard and education. For new Seniors, the Senior FS is longer than the Junior version and stamina can become a factor, so it won't be a walk in the Park. But BeBe, Alissa and Dani Kahle need to start working hard, 'cause the young 'uns are a comin'.

she may be able to hold off the junior Caroline, Marai and Rachel but can she hold off Mao, Miki and Yuna? That's her immediate concern

Takeda: 3Z underrotated
Glebova: 3Z rotated, fell
Martinova: 3Z combo, clean
Cagnon: 3Z2T combo -GOE, 3Z underrotated
Samson: 3Z underrotated, 3Z SEQ underrotated

Chukum - I like your outline here. Can you give me the total scores that these skaters earned or did not earn for what they did?
I'm suspecting that a rotated 3z with fall gets higher than a clean underrotated 3z.

In base points a rotated 3Lz with a fall nets 2.0 points. It cannot go any lower even if it had other faults, like a wrong edge take-off.

A clean underrotated 3Lz = 1.9 points (and it could be a little less after GOEs).

he he. So a skater while in mid air will think of falling to fool the scoring system than land 46% off an acceptable landing.

Martinova got base value for her 3Z combo in the FS. Two judges gave her -GOE, but she would up with 0 GOE overall. All of her jumps except one 3T got -GOE. She even got -GOE on her 2Z (not underrotated, just doubled).

I'd say jumping is a major weakness for Arina.

The trouble with just calling it a flip (the obvious solution) is that skaters probably have two Lutzes and two flips planned already, to maximize their points. If their two flutzes get called as flips, then they receive zero credit for the other two jumps because of repeating the same jump more than twice.

Mathman, for a non skater you have it pretty much summed up! Better than I could do and I spent my life in the sport!
