Ladies - Free Program

I don't think Emily needs to lose weight. I think what she looks like now is her natural body shape. I do think she needs to do something with that stringy hair, however!

I remember people making fun of a hefti Miki eating junk food on breaks with of all skaters Oda. Fast forward to 2006-2007 season, she steps out on the ice and the first thing Peggy Fleming said, "Wow she is in shape!" Now you have to admit, she took a hint, and a big one. Why has to be this big summit conference on Emily's weight. Is her Harvard-bound rumpus too proud to take a hint from us lesser people. Yes that's right. I'm getting disgusted at her.

You're getting dusgusted over Emily? I'm sure she looks about 100 times better in a skating dress than you ever would. I don't think that her weight is causing her problems. She is not overweight, not even close. What she is, is muscular, and that is something that she cannot necessarily change. If she were to lose weight, it would be muscle, and that would be even worse for her skating. People like you that seem to think that skaters need to be rail thin to be competitive, that's what I'm getting disgusted at.

GOD help me...

Well, GOD help me but I totally agree with dancindiva's post. Emily is not overweight in the least. She is muscular and healthy. She is not underweight like some others (Tanith), who I am owrried about.

Excellent post dancindiva!!

Emily needs powerful music as that's the kind of skater she is. After this season, I've added her to my very short list of skaters that could skate to the music from The Lord of the Rings. Not only is it powerful music, but you need to be able to skate up to it and Emily certainly has that ability.

I have never understood why when you have a skater that obviously needs the "big" music, the coach/choreographer picks balletic, soft music for them. Same goes for the skater who can't skate up to the big powerful pieces that are out there and yet the coach/choreographer picks it for someone who would be more naturally suited to the soft pieces.

Yet, it always seems to happen every year.

Emily Hughes is one of my biggest favourites among lady singles skaters and I really enjoy her skating and also like her person / personality on the ice very much. I´m waiting with great interest towards next season and her programmes!!!

It's the accumulated points achieved throughout this season only that counts, so according to http://217.158.112.238/vsite/vfile/page/fileurl/0,11040,4844-181993-199211-119552-0-file,00.pdf it will be as follows.

Asada $45,000
Kim $45,000
Ando $18,000
(Asada and Kim tied for 1st)

Takahashi $45,000
Joubert $27,000
Oda $18,000

Shen/Zhao $67,500
Savchenko/Szolkowy $40,500
Zhang/Zhang $40,500
(S/S and Z/Z tied for 2nd)

Denkova/Staviski $67,500
Dubreuil/Lauzon $40,500
Domnina/Shabulin $27,000

It looks like Asia is taking Most of ISU prize money. I'm sure Oda, Zhang/zhang and Domnina/shabulin won't feel as bad about not medaling at worlds after they recieve their bonus. Extra money always make be feel a little happier.

does someone know is she will be coach by arutunian next season too or she'll return to japan?

When Mao includes 3A in her short, it's definitealy as a solo jump.
If successful, she'll blow the field with 74-75 point mark.
With a big room for errors, she can try any "adventures" in FS.
Even if not successfull, that's not as fatal as a combo failure.

If Mao (or others) start doing a triple Axel in the short program, it seems likely that the ISU will eventually change the rules to allow "either a double or triple Axel" as the required Axel jump. In that case, Mao could do something like 3A, 3Lz and 3F+3Lo.

Generally it would take a critical mass of skaters to force that change. If all of the top 5 skaters were capable of triple axels in competition, then maybe you would see the change.

Quads in mens short programs weren't allowed until there was a critical mass of men who could do a quad.

Even triple-triples in JUNIOR ladies shorts only allowed this year after the Kim-Asada domination of the junior ranks and during that time you had other skaters capable ( if not consistent ) of triple-triple combinations.

I really think and hope, after this WorldChamps., we don't need to count points, talkin about rumours etc. We need to do that, when the real quality is NOT there, like in many years passed away.

Now, we HAVE QUALITY, thank you God. Less talk about THAT.
Forgot about mediocre "stars" to talk about them non-stop!!!

RE: Emily and weight

A comment on Emily's "weight" - has anyone notice the power and height that Emily gets in her jumps? They are huge! She has muscular thighs and is extremely strong. If her weight was a problem, she would not be getting such height on those jumps. People have different body types. As previous posters mentioned, t.v. camera adds a lot; people don't look the same in person. Also - if you were to see some of those "lean" skaters in person, you might be very frightened for them when you can see their skeletal bones.

I agree Ora.

The only skater affected by weight this year is: Kimmie Meissner. Is she overweight? No, of course not. But in accordance with nature she has "filled out" and perhaps gained 3 pounds. She has not adjusted to this and her jumps were very low and barely there. I remember Kwan at the same age going through the same thing, and after a year or so she adjusted.

Emily adjusted to her body type years ago and she has pretty big jumps. Emily has the normal body of a skater who is a powerful jumper, like Irina S. or half a dozen other skaters like her. As far as her program, I feel like she was judged very harshly and unfairly. Yes, she needs to work on posture and artistry and not overthinking each jump. But the judges were a bit too quick to downgrade her jumps while ignoring similiar deductions with other skaters. Also keep in mind that our top three skaters have a life outside of skating-all three are students! I do not believe that Mao, or YuNa or Miki attend any sort of school.

If we are going to pick apart skater's bodies, Emily has upper arms that are a bit heavy....solution: sleeves. Long sleeves. Who amongst us does not have a figure flaw? In person Emily is not even one pound overweight. And like many of the posters on this board I worry more about the underweight skaters. In person a few of these girls are very unnatural looking.

There is one skater in particular-a famous skater-whose body is like an eight year old girl. In person she looks like a Bratz doll. She looks sick and anemic, and long ago she should have been admitted to the hospital to find out why her body was not maturing. Elite skater or not, as a parent I would have been consumed with worry over why she wasn't growing. If she hadn't been a skater she would have been an ideal candidate for human growth hormone treatments. But in the bizarre culture of figure skating her tiny child like body is an asset, not a worry. And so her parents did nothing, (I assume) and now she is an adult with a child's undeveloped tiny body attached to a normal adult head. And the truth is, in person she looks freakish.

As a parent, Emily's normal teenage figure would provide me with a lot less worry.

Ah, I hadn't thought about that. I don't know why not.

In that case, I really hope she does 3Axle instead of 3(F)lutz from now on for the SP! It will be very pretty.

Eeeek, I hope not. I'm happy with the boundaries of the sport getting pushed further but a 3Axle becoming almost required from the Ladies seems just...wrong...to me.
