Ladies - Free Program

Who looks like a Bratz doll? Is it Zhang or Pang?

Just looked at a picture of the Zhangs, and the adult head on a child's body thing does describe her, if that's who you were talking about.

I remember people making fun of a hefti Miki eating junk food on breaks with of all skaters Oda. Fast forward to 2006-2007 season, she steps out on the ice and the first thing Peggy Fleming said, "Wow she is in shape!" Now you have to admit, she took a hint, and a big one. Why has to be this big summit conference on Emily's weight. Is her Harvard-bound rumpus too proud to take a hint from us lesser people. Yes that's right. I'm getting disgusted at her.

Lisa... did Emily steal your prom date or something? She must have because then I could understand all the hate in the above...

Emily Hughes is a remarkable young lady who is combining high academic achievement with being an elite skater.

At 18, I was trying get into college, sneaking into Prince concerts, figure out how to make cheerleading sound more "extra-curricular" on essays and attempting to con my parents into allowing me 30 more minutes on the ol' curfew. I wasn't competing at the highest levels of a sport and applying for some of the toughest schools in the US...

But of course, I also didn't have perfect strangers calling me fat and being disgusted with me... And just for the record, only you can make you a "lesser people" and Emily losing 20 pounds from her rump won't make you a "greater people."

I have a quick question for anyone who might have an answer.

Does Yu-Na Kim speak any English? If not then does Brian Orser speak Korean? How does that coaching situation work out..do they use a translator?

They (ESPN) tried "interviewing" Yu-na after the short so I take it that she can understand a little, maybe speak just enough to get by.

And boy is that doll ugly...

She could be like Sergei Grinkov was - can understand it just fine, but doesn't feel comfy speaking it...

Whatever they do, it obviously works... Brian seems like a great coach... he looked so proud of her!:agree:

Didn't he say at Skake Canada that he just watches her and gives her a nod every now and then.:)

Oh! that's great news! Where did you got these news? I can't wait to see her new pograms! Hope she'll come at Skate Canada!

During Skate Canada Tracy Wilson said that Brian was having a really hard time explaining to Yu Na she needed more power and Ooomph in her double axel, but it was getting lost in the attempts of translation. Finally, he sat her down, told her to watch him, he went out and did a beauty, then turned and told her, "Do it like that!!"

I hope she has some sort of a break before starting to gear up for next season. W/her back, rest is the best thing for that sort of a chronic injury. :)

wouldn't it be great if they formed a 'partnership' of sorts like Scott Hamilton had with Don Laws

Brian B had with Linda

etc....

Generally it would take a critical mass of skaters to force that change. If all of the top 5 skaters were capable of triple axels in competition, then maybe you would see the change.

Quads in mens short programs weren't allowed until there was a critical mass of men who could do a quad.

Not really a critical mass - the rule change came after the end of the 1998 season for men at a time when only Stojko, Kulik and Guo were landing quads consistently with some others having hit and miss times with them (Yags and Plush).

If Asada and Nakano come out next season with triple axels like they've had this season and one or two other skaters start attempting them then i think the ISU might feel pressured to start motting the inclusion of the triple axel in the ladies SP.

OT: Ant, this British vocabulary of yours...! What on earth is "motting"? I'm thinking a typo for... botting? cotting? dotting? nope ......

:o No no that's no British-isms that's my very consistently poor spelling or mistyping! I'm the king of transposing letters and making the wrong letter the double in any given word!! I meant to write mooting instead of the completely incomprehnsible motting! Sorry - i really should proof my posts more often than i do!

Ant, if I'd known what mooting was, I'm sure I would have figured out motting!

from Dictionary.com
verb (used with object) 4. to present or introduce (any point, subject, project, etc.) for discussion.
5. to reduce or remove the practical significance of; make purely theoretical or academic.
6. Archaic. to argue (a case), esp. in a mock court.

Doesn't it seem as though 4 and 5 are incompatible?

Too bad, I was hoping for another "bollocks" or "pillock."

Anyway, back to Ladies FP!

You mean you don’t have “O’Byrne’s Dublin Slang Dictionary” bookmarked? You can’t go wrong with a list that starts out,

Abra-Kebobra: A magic act performed on Saturday night, where fast food vanishes down the performer’s throat, and then shortly afterwards in reappears on the taxi floor. “Ger scoffed that Abrakebobra chip butty, after ten pints, and yacked all over the bog.”

"He had been motting the triple Axel all season, but he had yet to score."

To be fair i think a lot of the stuff in the link is taken from a very puerile comic aimed at adults over here called "Viz". MOst of the cartoon strips make very obvious puerile jokes or are full of double entendres but the one thing they have created is there own language of which "Abra-Kebobra" is one of many. They've actually compiled a rather hilarious dictionary called "Roger's Profanisaurus" whcih keeps me amused!

The funny thing is that that sentence made complete sense to me!

Actually, I think they kind of work together in this case. If two or three skaters start doing triple Axels, the ISU might bring up for discussion the question of whether to change the SP rules -- even though in the end that discussion might turn to be merely an academic excercise not resulting in any action.
