Ladies go for Gold! Free Skate

Kwan and Slutskaya are now officially the Browning and Stojko of ladies skating.

!

At least Kwan and Slute both have Olympic medals, unlike Kurt Browning.

The competition was nice and the gold is fully deserved. Congratulations to Japan
The silver medal is a won more on other's faults than on Sasha's perfomance. Her domination over Slutskaya is quite contestable.
The bronze is a disappointment. Irina will never get the olympic gold (the only color in which Irina was interested). I'm sad for her.

It looks like the men's podium. Nice gold, average silver and bronze. Not my favorite configuration.

Kimmie hasn't skated yet. Though I hope for both Kimmie and Irina to fall on their a$$es. This is a very good podium as of the moment (both Shiz and Fumie).

Nice sportsmanship.:ohwell:

I have to echo that I am ecstatic that we don't have the teenagers atop the podium again! I can be happy about all three of these medals. Good for everyone and I can't wait to see the skates. Silver for Sasha is still pretty darn good ( I thought that about Michelle and Irina too when they got silver). Irina will always be remembered as a tough competitor with TWO olympic medals; that's two more than many, many talented skaters have.

I know she will be overshadowed by the podium gals, but I'm SO proud of Joannie. Best Canadian ladies finish in the Olympics since Elizabeth Manley!

Trivia corner: it's now four olympics in a row that the US skater who won the ladies SP didn't win the LP (Kerrigan, Kwan, Kwan, Cohen).

Kwan and Slutskaya are now officially the Browning and Stojko of ladies skating.

The two premiere men for almost a decade and no olympic gold and the two premiere ladies of (over!) a decade and no olympic gold. Hey, it happens. And, it's all the more reason to not to much stock in a once every four year competition (esp without figures to stabilize things a little).

Well said, Mafke and so true..............42

WOW

I Love Shizuka!!

I really wish MK was here heheheh! It would have been nice

Shizuka's skate was so amazing! What a performance!!!

She really feels the music, she should thank Puccini for real

It is, however, the first time since '92 that the lady who won the US Nats was the highest ranking American at Olys.

If Sasha couldn't win, I'm glad Shiz did. She is lovely on the ice, and now if she decides to retire, she can do it with a gold medal. I said after the short that I thought Irina looked tired..it's been a long season for her.

Final thoughts after a crazy competition:

Too bad for Irina and Fumie, they sure hoped to be higher. And too bad for Sasha that she still can't do that clean LP in a big event! But major kudos to Shizuka, she came up with the goods in the biggest moment and deserves this glory. She's won everything there is to win in this sport. :)

Awesome job, Joannie! Top 5 in the Olympics is huge. No doubt spurred on by Jeff. ;)

And I'm most perplexed by how underscored Gedevanishivili was... ?

It bugs me that MSNBC has big pictures of Sasha falling. I would rather see the podium. Boy, the journalists always seem to go for the "sting of defeat" rather than the "thrill of victory." To me , an Olympic medal or a clean skate (of course, both would be optimal!) are both worthy of celebration!

Well if she leaves eligible skating I hope she doesn't ...quit, I'm sure SOI would really like to have her (aren't they short on ladies?)

I don't think they would pick her over Kwan or Cohen so it would depend on what they do. I just can't see Kwan skating with SOI for some reason.
