Ladies go for Gold! Free Skate

Humm...I wouldn't be so sure. She said she wanted nothing less than gold BUT she did beat Irina.

I am SOOOOO happy that Shiz won...if not Ira, then Shizuka!!!!!

With the way that she skated, and with Fumie skating so well, she should be darn happy with that medal. She had the shakiest jumps in the SP.

Thrilled for my fav Cohen in the silver medal position - yay for her! And total congradulations to Arakawa who was the only one to come up big in the free. Well deserved win!

And Hooray for Joannie Rochette for skating a beautiful long and pulling up to 5th - what an outstanding result for her in this very competitive field. Just proves she belongs in the top rank of skaters in the world right now.

Well done, Shiza!!!

Why did the judges mark down Fumie? Was it the spins? If anyone wuz robbed it was Fumie.

If only Joannie had landed the second lutz! Oh well, she did great and I'm so proud of her. Though I'm always pretty proud of Joannie.

Also, I have no doubt thta a clean Michelle would have been golden tonight. No 3-3 needed at all. Did anyone land one?

Well, she is the 2004 World Champion, so it should not come as much of a surprise.

Now I've got to keep a total poker face as Mr. RealtorGal presses me for information while at the same time insisting that I not tell him anything before we watch it tonight. :chorus: Well, at least he will be happy that his 2 favorite skaters finished 1-2, although I'm sure he would have preferred that they reverse order.

Michelle did not have to injure herself with all those 3-3

For all you know, she might have gotten injured just doing triples. Her time has passed.

What a shocker! Shiz rocks...........what an upset! Silver for Sasha....fantastic save............am so sorry for Irina, but this was hers to win or loose. Kudos for all three American women for top ten placements............can't wait to see this one tonight............ thanks to all for the updates and coverage.........42

Wow! How ironic...Two of the greatest women figure skaters of an era end with, first a silver, and then a bronze in championship-marked and lengthy career for both...long time friends

All Hail Michelle and Irina:bow:

Congrats to Shizi...one of the loveliest skaters to grace the ice

also to Cohen, not perfect, but just ask Michelle, she didn't lose the gold, she won the silver!

Hurrah to Kimmie and Emily, they certainly got there licks in and are contenders for glory north of the border.:agree:

THE 24-YEAR-OLD LOOKS SHOCKED!!! Shizuka Arakawa is only third in Japan, as the young Mao Asada, 16, who is in front of her, could not come to the games. Does not matter to Japan though, as Arakawa comes through brilliantly!!! IT'S GOLD FOR JAPAN! THEIR FIRST FIGURE SKATING GOLD!!!!

They *had* to mention Mao, eh??? Is this the start of the Japanese Steamroller Era???

America lost its 3-Olympics grip on the gold.....let's hail Yamaguchi, Lipinsky & Hughes. Now make room for JAPAN!

Sasha has loads of silver world and national medals. I'm not really happy for her.. I wanted Fumie to get her medal though it would have been sad if Sasha finished 4rth.

Oh please, this is a time for celebrating the winners and participants..........leave your sour grapes for another thread...... 42

Does this mean Joannie gets to skate in the gala? I can't remember if it's top four or five. Great palcement for her.

And with all the great skaters Japan has had, Shiz was the one to finally do it. How wonderful that Japan finally gets a medal in the games and it's the crown jewel.

Kwan and Slutskaya are now officially the Browning and Stojko of ladies skating.

The two premiere men for almost a decade and no olympic gold and the two premiere ladies of (over!) a decade and no olympic gold. Hey, it happens. And, it's all the more reason to not to much stock in a once every four year competition (esp without figures to stabilize things a little).

On the other hand, I'm really, really happy for Arakawa! A long up and down career and what an up this night was!

Congrats Irina, same color collection as Michelle, I am proud of you both. Sasha, continue with the bridesmaid status, in a good way. I knew this was gonna happen. Shizuka was hungry to begin with, it wasn't perfect (2 popped/doubled jumps) but she stayed on her one foot/skate, and the difference was one triple between her and Sasha. Dang it!!!
