Ladies OGM Contenders 2018

Just a thought: If Dabin Choi skates her GP assignments clean, and skates clean too at the Olympics, will we have another Sotnikova? I doubt it, but imagine the drama. :laugh2::drama::eek:

It's not like Adelina came out of nowhere. I mean...she made the GPF. We can cross this road once Da Bin makes the GPF or even a medal on the GP. I love her though so I'd enjoy the popcornz:)

I just watched Mariah Bell's East Of Eden LP from Skate America. Goodness knows that if she could skate like that, she could really be a contender. Is she planning on keeping her East Of Eden LP for the Olympic season?

I've been saying this for years and I truly think if she nails her content in combination with her delivery of choreography she can most certainly compete with any of the contenders for second or third. The problem is her inconsistency with jumping but we've seen competitors who go from inconsistent to consistent from one year to the next a lot lately. Maybe it can be her year.

I'm not sure what her planned programs are but I wish this was her SP.

Fire I tell ya!

I agree. Zhenya will have to have a breakdown to not win. But it is the Olympics, and people love underdog stories. The Grand Prix will let us glean what's in store for us. Either way, I hope all the ladies will have their own Olympic moment.

Yeah like how in the Sochi Olympic season, everyone did mao and Yulia as contenders bc of their gp series results but they didn't even medal in the individual event. The same story could be for Evgenia.

True, but neither were the OGM favorite like Evgenia will be. Like Yuna, Evgenia makes it very easy for the judges to give her high scores because her technical elements are delivered so solidly. I expect that a couple of the women will skate two clean programs at the Olympics, but Evgenia will really have to come unglued to lose. Even in the rare occasions when she falls, every other element in the program is delivered with the usual high quality, so her score doesn't drop much with just the one error.

They could start by calling her Flutz and pre-rotations. And before anyone accuses me of hating on Evgenia, no, I think all UR and Pre-Rotations and flutzes should be called. Ashley got more than once lucky last season. Karen's really obvious UR were overlooked. While judges are so lenient with the top contenders, they judge the less known skaters more strictly. After Sochi, figures skating can't afford to have yet another controversy about judging.

Well Osmond and Medvedeva should get called on their wrong lutz. But I wonder if that would make a chance for other ladies.

I agree that calls should be made more consistently. However, most top skaters these days have deficiencies that they get a pass on, so it evens out I think.

Who are the Koreans touting as their current female star? I would think being on home ice might help their skater have the performance of a lifetime.

I doubt the Koreans will rise THAT much for the occasion. Ironically these Games came in the worst possible year for South Korea. Yuna is retired and the top youngsters aren't eligible yet. The girls who are Senior right now are good, but probably not Olympic medal material.

she could be and make osmond or Zagitova the Tara lipniski of 1996 and Gracie gold for 2002 (bc Sarah Hughes was a surprise winner).

I re-read your sentence so many times and still can't figure out what you mean. Actually I think I know what you mean, but why 1996 and where does Gracie Gold fit in? :scratch2:

Sorry [emoji28] I meant 1998 and Gracie gold for 2002 bc Gracie could be a surprise winner with a great fs like how Sarah Hughes did

While I agree that most top skaters have deficiencies which gets ignored, so it evens out, it's the less known skaters I feel are treated unfairly with inconsistent judging. They already are in disadvantage with PCS. They could skate a wonderful, heartfelt, brilliantly interpreted, choreographed and structured program and it may not even get noticed. Now, they are in addition disadvantaged in Tech, because top skaters get a pass on UR or edges, while less known skaters don't.

Gracie has struggled lately, but it's hard for me to count out a skater who has the capability of earning +2 and +3 for every element in her program. If she regains her form and fitness, anything can happen.

Apologies if this has been mentioned already in this thread... I was rewatching Zagitova's FS from Russian nationals yesterday, and I picked up on an interesting point in Tarasova's commentary: she said that, for over 100 years, the Olympic gold medal has never been won by the lady who was world champion in the previous year. Can anyone confirm -- did I understand that correctly?

That is fascinating if true -- and it certainly supports the idea that the Olympics is a different headgame than any other competition...

Oksana Baiul? Are you sure that's what she said?

I hope and pray for Alina Zagitova for Gold. It may be asking for a lot but it will be a dream for me because I love Black Swan and I love Don Quixote. She could become the first skater to win Olympic Gold with a Don Quixote program since John Curry?

I didn't see the clip you mentioned, but that doesn't sound right. Didn't Tara Lipinski win Worlds in 1997 and then win gold at the Olympics in 1998?
