I think that the only person who could beat Medvedeva as she is right now would be a perfect Gracie Gold, but as for now we have no signs whatsoever of decent skating from her. There is still plenty of time though, of course, and she has all the goods: she just needs to put them together.
And we have still to see how Medvedeva's consistency will develop over the next year or so: 400 days are a lot of time in Ladies' (or, better, teenagers') skating

Having said that, I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel for Miss Gold at the moment.

Might be a bit wild on my part but.....if the only mistake Ashley does is the flutzing, then I still feel that she might have a shot at the podium.

Not really. I mean it's only slightly more than an year away. By now, I think most performances in the preceding three years have almost acted like a litmus test on where who will probably stand. Unless of course, if there's the Adelina scandal or the case of Wagner, where she basically underperformed at Nationals (hoping both don't happen again).

As if the pressure wasn't there already.
But seriously speaking, I really do hope for a miracle for Gold. I really don't want to put her in the sport category of "what could have been". But having said that, I don't know if a clean Gracie would win a Gold. For her to go clean, I'm wondering if she'd have to go the Denis Ten route of simplifying the complicated moves.

)Ever since 1996 (when they made the transition to having Winter and Summer Olympics in alternate quads), the world champion 2 years before the Olympics always ends up on the podium. So Medvedeva will medal, probably win, probably with a clean skate, probably with the same tinkly miming program she's been using for the past 3 seasons, probably absurdly overscored. (Unless the Koreans have been quietly plotting their revenge since Sochi.)
This season will be most telling - not only has the ladies world champion prior to the Olympics always been on the podium, but for the past few cycles, at least 2 medalists from the prior worlds will medal. Feel free to place your bets after Helsinki - I know I will.
I don't see Gold or Asada making the team at this point. Pogorilaya will - this season has been a transformative one for her - and I'm going to go ahead and bet on her for a bronze.
Ashley seems to be on a downward trend, but I predict another top 7 finish from her and maybe another viral photo or two.
Honestly - I'm a bit nervous for the Japanese ladies and their ability to keep 3 spots with 2 ladies making their worlds debut. Regardless, I think we'll see a Japanese lady on the podium (or perhaps just off of it - I can see Satoko in 4th).
Carolina won't challenge for a medal but Lori will make her a masterpiece of a swan song.
Kaetlyn's performance will likely depend on how the rest of this season goes for her, and if it gives her some momentum/confidence moving forward. If she does poorly at worlds, I can't see her bouncing back; if she medals, she'll be a real threat.

This is correct!! Michelle Kwan was the reigning World Champion going into the 2002 Olympics. Irina Slutskaya was the reigning Silver Medalist, and Sarah Hughes was in 3rd as the 2001 World Bronze Medalist. It was a shock, at least to me, to see Sarah on the Podium. The shock was to see Michelle and Irina have less than stellar programs and hand the OGM to the hungry and well prepared "Lady In Waiting" Sarah Hughes....

Olympic is political games, they won't let 3 Russian girls on the podium unless the rest bomb. They will not even like to see 2 Russian girls on the podium.A couple months later, I've totally changed my mind
