Ladies Short Program

I'm a big Mao fan and like also a lot YuNa skating, but for those who think Mao was overmarked, here's what I think...
Mao got approximatly 59 points and YuNa got 64. Mao missed the 3lutz which has a base value of 6 points. So if she would have done it, she would have scored 65 points. Why couldn't she get that score with the 3-3 all rotated and YuNa, 64 with a 3-1 ?!
Anyway, I wish them all good luck for the LP!!! I'm getting so excited!! CAn't wait!!!

Because Yu-na got high GOE's on her triple lutz, whereas Mao didn't get high GOE"s on her triple/triple because it was messed up, that's kind of why... Basically on one required element, her combination, Yu-na got some poor scores. But on her second required element, she got high scores.

Mao messed up one required element (two hands on her triple/triple) and then she completely obmitted another element, so she didn't even get credit for a single axel.

I heard that Yukari had a Biellmann when she was younger, but that it affected her back and she refrained from using it.

Didn't she have biellmann last year? I swear I saw her do a biellmann spin at world championship in tokyo.

Thank you for your info. In my post, I was reiterating what she said in an interview. She was saying that people were surprised to see that she was able to do a biellmann even though she had had it when she was younger. So the main point of my post was that she seemed to be capable of doing a biellmann if her back condition allowed. But I have not been following her close enough to say when she did and when she did not.

ETA: In her combination spin in this season's SP, she has some biellman position, even though the position may not be as good as some of the other ladies. But she does not do it in her layback. She only does catch-foot. I am not knowledgeable enough as to how this translates into the level of spin, in comparison to the one with the biellman. Yet, her dounut spin is amazing. I also like her sit position.

Protocols are out.

Yu-Na got the -3 on her 3-1 but her lutz got a WHOPPING 1.80 GOE (well deserved IMO) and she also got a 1.4 on her loooong Ina Bauer into 2A. She also got positive GOEs on every other element and maxed out her levels (besides Lv3 on SLSS).

Caroline got almost full marks for her layback and a high GOE on her spiral sequence. Her 3F-3T and 2A got low positive GOE (but fully ratified combo) but got dinged for her flutz. Her SLSS was deemed a Lvl2 (it was not as complex, I agree) and her other spins did not get as high GOE as her layback.

Carolina lost points on the 1A and also did not max out her levels, not even close. Yukari and Kimmie got dinged for having lips, and Kimmie's 3T was underrotated. Somehow, Mao didn't even get a deduction for leaving the lutz out.

I still wonder about this issue. It's as if Mao was much better off not trying a jump at all, than only getting in a single or double lutz. If she had, there would have been a score to give a low GOE to, and this way it's almost as if the only penalty is no POSITIVE points earned. Am I wrong in thinking that's really all she suffered for leaving out a required element?

She suffered because she got no points for that element. For example, normally Mao gets 5 points for her triple lutz. She got nada, IF Mao would have fallen, she would have collected at least 2 points for that element. So I wouldn't say she wasn't punished. I do agree it was a joke though. The look on Rafael's face when he saw Mao's scores was hilarious. He shook his head pointed to the score board and showed Mao. I'm willing to bet he said something like your 2/3 points behind sweetie, you can overcome that. Although of course if Yu-na had gone out and skated her program clean she could have likely scored in the 70's, which would have put Mao in a big hole.

But personally I think she should have been more docked for missing an element, that was ridiculous at least she should have been hit on performance/execution. The short program did cost her the competition. I'm totally willing to admit that Yu-na perhaps was overscored as well, but Yu-na deserved that 5 point lead over Mao. I know Yu-ha messed up both jumps in her combination but it as only one required element, and one mistake kind of flew into the next one. In the case of Mao...
