This should be a very exciting competition. I hope Shizuka can pull it together and deliver a beautiful performance to "Turandot". Also, I think it is interesting to note that Liashenko received some fine scores for presentation (whatever COP refers to that set as?) and that they are right up there with Suguri's in several cases.

Fumie about her Paint It Black program: “Before I skated to this music I didn’t know who the Rolling Stones were,” Suguri said. “When Lori Nichol gave me this music I wanted to learn more so I got a DVD and watched them.” I know she's Japanese, but I thought EVERYONE had at least heard of the Stone (not that I would have picked her to skate to them. Very interested to see this program.)

Apparently, Sasha fell on her triple Lutz that was supposed to be in combination. I wonder whether she inserted a combo elsewhere? She says “I didn’t have the feeling or the rhythm going into the jump,” Cohen said. “Things happen in sports and you can’t always be perfect. But I was able to refocus.” Bodes well for her that she was able to get her head back into the game.

I find this comment iteresting, Even with the fall, Cohen’s execution of her other elements allowed her to earn a higher technical score than was planned for the program. Her planned score was 26.00, but she earned a score of 28.20. Falls plagued Cohen earlier in the month at the International Figure Skating Challenge when she fell three times. How can that be with a fall? I could be totally wrong here, but I can't help but think that sounds to be a bit suspicious. Would they help out a heavy favorite? I guess they've been doing it for years and for many different skaters. Why would things change under the CoP Of course, it could all be on the up and up.

When Fumie skates well, I love her, except for the free leg on her spiral (if I could just turn out that leg and straighten that knee!). So I will be excited to see her SP since I LOVE the string version of "Paint It Black" (best music in the entire sr. ladies' discipline this season, IMO). And I love that she loves it. When she was doing "Swan Lake" last season, I just ached for her because it just seemed like she was trying so hard to move in a way that wasn't right for her. Now Mick she can move to!

As for Sasha, even before hearing about the IFSC I wondered about competition and travel fatigue for her. Of course everyone has to deal with it, but she seems to be putting out so much energy in trying to control her energy and prove herself by winning every GP event she's in. I think she may be suffering from some mid-year burn-out. Ideally, it would have been better for her to not do the IFSC, but there was no way. Unfortunate timing for Sasha, but hopefuly she and Tarasova will learn from it. Also, she was kind of in a no-win situation re her schedule and pressure. If she didn't do well at her GP events, it would have been the "Inconsistency" albatross hanging around her neck. If she put out the energy to win all her events, she risks burn-out. Interesting that the two skaters who did the IFSC, Sasha and Shizuka did worse than expected. Bad scheduling on the part of the ISU, but if the GPF had been later, it would have been too close to US Nats. However Sasha and Shizuka do, I hope they are able to mentally and physically regroup. This has been a great year for Shizuka up until now and I'd hate to see her completely lose her momentum.

The top 3 are indeed very close and congrats to Fumie, Sasha, and Elena. Still, the LP should be verrrry interesting! Fumie could have the momentum coming off her win at NHK, but with things so close and not having the judging blocs to look towards as a kind of crystal ball, the GPF is definitely up for grabs--and if the top 3 tank in the LP, anybody could win. Malaguena is getting so old. That drama, that same old same old. The first 3 times Cohen skated to it I could feel the excitement. Afterall who could say no to that music. But Suguri's SP this year is one that has real musical sophistication and was obviously choreographed by someone who's been trained in classical music. I'm not the biggest Suguri fan, but a program like that makes you feel like you are discovering something new everytime you watch it, not to say how much it takes a skater to pull a piece off like that. Whearas Cohen's Malaguena just gets boringer and boringer. It's all about drama, and repeated, overused drama at that. It just doesn't help if you have to watch the same movie over and over.

This year's ladies GPF is one hell of a snooze fest, with the only good programs being Suguri's SP and Liashenko's LP.

I feel the same about Malaguena. First time I saw it, I thought it was great (even with a fall). Now I have to turn it off. I do love watching Sasha skate but her music choices are horribly boring. If only she'd choose something modern, jazzy and lively I think she could pull off a more convincing program.
